“Wonderful B&B with a great business model...”
Reviewed 25 August 2010

Journeys-Within is a hidden gem. We heard of it from a friend whose family had stayed there at least once. The B&B is a couple of blocks off a main street so is quiet, except for the sounds of nature - birds, frogs, crickets, etc. Each of the cottages is one or two units which are spacious and extremely comfortable. Guests are greeted with fresh flowers in the rooms along with a cloth shopping bag to reduce the number of plastic bags used and traditional Cambodian scarves for each guest.

Breakfast is included and offers a wide selection of wonderful, fresh options. The fresh fruit and yogurt can't be beat but everything else we ate was excellent and served with really good Cambodian coffee and fruit juices/shakes.

The TV gets channels from all over the world so there is little trouble, as near as I could tell to get television from your region of the world. The mini-bar is stocked with unlimited free bottled water and the snacks were very reasonably priced.

The spa-like bathroom has a open shower that seems to float above a bed of river rock and has the best water pressure we experienced in the region. Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash come in pottery bottles so there is no waste of little plastic containers.

The truly special part of Journeys-Within is their contributions to the local Siem Reap community. The owners have built and fund a private school for approximately 100 children, I believe. I will update this review if that number is incorrect. While the rooms were more expensive than any room we had in Vietnam, a percentage of the fee goes for the ongoing operations and scholarships for the school. Additionally, when a recent fire burned down a number of houses in a nearby village, the owners gave homeowners zero interest loans to rebuild.

Since our trip to Vietnam was to perform some humanitarian projects, it was nice to stay in a B&B with humanitarian goals and projects f their own.

I stayed here with several friends, all in town to see the temples, and we had a fantastic stay. Complementary airport pickup and dropoff, complementary laundry service, breakfast included -- everything was fantastic. We also got "welcome scarves" upon arrival, which was a very nice touch.

Service could not have been any better. The rooms were spacious and the pool was lovely for an afternoon swim between sight-seeing. We also fell in love with Tuna, the resident puppy -- she's a sweetheart.

There are security guards and fencing, which made us feel safe, and a tuk-tuk driver would take us into town for dinner. It's about 4km from town, but only a short ride.

The Journeys Within owners were very accommodating, especially when I messed up the nights we needed to reserve -- no problems.

Highly, highly recommended! I only wish we'd gotten to see the school next door, but there was no time.

My husband and I were married in July, and Journeys Within planned an intinerary for our honeymoon. Overall, our trip was well planned, organized, safe, beautiful, and filled with adventures. We started off in Bangkok where we were met by our guide Ron who spoke perfect English. He showed us the many temples within the area, the canals, and the city scape. We stayed at a very nice hotel called the Sofitel where we had an awesome view of the city. It kinda reminded me of Scarlett Johannsen in Lost In Translation when she is sitting and looking out her hotel window of Tokyo. It was really cool. Next, we to Chiang Mai, where we took cooking classes, and we had a fantastic time riding the elephants thru these jungle trails and learning more about the elephants. Again, we stayed at a very nice spa resort called Rarin Jinda Resort. Our guide Gina was very good in Chiang Mai too. Finally, we got to Siem Reap where we met by their superstar Narla. The B & B was really nice. The rooms were very spacious and clean. I especially liked that the waters were complimentary in the refrigerator considering that the other places we stayed at were not complimentary. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We had an excellent guide named Sinna who showed us the temples and such. The breakfast that were served were very good, and you can custom order what you want a day before. So, it is very quaint and charming. We both loved the crepes stuffed with bananas with syrup, it was very good. After much temple sight seeing, we ended our trip in Phuket where we were able to relax and swim in the ocean. We had a great time sea kayaking in Phang Nga Bay, that was really special too. So, usually when we travel, we plan things on our own. But, since this was our honeymoon, we wanted to make things easy. Andrea from Journeys Within did a great job planning this. Eventhough, we had guides, we were the only two, and we had plenty of free time on our own. It made life so much easier to just relax and enjoy ourselves knowing that Andrea had planned this. Overall, I highly recommend Journeys Within.

We just returned from visiting our daughter who is serving in the Peace Corps in Cambodia. While in Siem Reap we stayed here and could not have been happier. Yes, there are less expensive places and also many that are closer to the action on Pub street. But JW B&B has big, beautiful rooms, wonderful staff, gorgeous grounds and pool, etc. Getting to "downtown" was a simple 10 minute tuk tuk ride, and it was nice to be able to head back to a quiet, lovely place like this at the end of the evening.

Journeys Within is a lovely, unique base from which to explore Siem Reap and the temples. My husband and I visited for 4 nights in June 2010 -- we were looking for an authentic, off-the-beaten path experience during our brief stay in Cambodia and, after doing some research online, were extremely impressed with Journey Within's commitment to philanthropic travel and by the terrific work they are doing in the area. Journeys Within did not disappoint! The B&B is really more like a boutique hotel, with several free standing villas surrounding a fabulous pool (which is much-needed in the Cambodia heat and which we pretty much had all to ourselves!). Breakfast, which is delicious and cooked to order, is served in a courtyard behind the main house/office. We stayed in a very nice two-story villa (#5), with a/c, free wireless, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen stocked with complimentary water and soft drinks, living room w/ TV & DVD player, queen-sized bed, and balcony. The staff, from the cleaners to the front-desk managers, are wonderfully friendly and accommodating, and eager to chat and practice their English with guests. Breakfast each day was delicious, and we also ate lunch one day at the B&B (delivered to our room by request), which was one of our favorite meals while in Siem Reap. Owner Brandon offered wonderful restaurant suggestions for us each evening for dinner (we especially enjoyed FCC and Viroth's), and "downtown" Siem Reap is just about a 10 or so minute tuk-tuk ride from the B&B (the Journeys Within staff will call a tuk-tuk for you when requested). Journeys Within coordinated a 3-day tour for us, which included visits to a number of temples and a boat ride on the Tonle Sap lake. Our guide was Sina, who was warm and friendly, spoke fantastic English, and had tremendous knowledge of the temples and surrounding area. A highlight of our trip was volunteering in an art class with local children in the Journeys Within Our Community school (located right next door to the B&B). Owners Brandon and Andrea are doing amazing work in Cambodia (and Laos), and it was great to see it in action, and to chat with Journeys Within Our Community directors, Camilla and Andy. Start to finish, we could not have asked for a better experience in Siem Reap! Journeys Within is highly recommended for those who want a glimpse into real Cambodia while at the same time enjoying lovely accommodations and personalized service. Don't miss Journeys Within!

We learned so much about Cambodia in our short stay! My wife and I chose Journeys Within because we wanted an authentic cultural experience. This was the real thing. Being able to have lunch with the owners and talk about their philanthropic work, to walk next door and help teach an English class, and to have a guide on hand that will drop you into his daily world, was the perfect package. Leap Lam (Lounh) was our guide, whose almost accent-less English and warm personality made us soon feel we had known him for most of our lives. He took us to many of the main sites, but it was stopping at the road side to speak with the locals, or visiting the monastery where he had studied as a child, that engaged us in an unforgettable experience. The accommodations were beautiful, the beds comfortable, the pool refreshing, and above all it is the work that these owners are committed to doing, changing many lives in Cambodia and Laos, that let's you know they are the real deal. Don't miss this stop, don't miss this guide, don't miss this opportunity.

I visited Siem Reap mainly to tour Angkor Wat. It was an amazing experience especially because I had an excellent guide and a wonderful place to stay. The guide, Leap Lam, was smart, very knowledgeable, and very easy to get along. Although Cambodian is his first language, his English is perfect . His knowledge of when to visit these sites so as to avoid the crowds was invaluable and he set a pace for touring this incredible site that was perfect for my schedule. I also strongly recommend the Journey Within B&B. The rooms are lovely, the food provided for breakfast and lunch was better than any I ate in Siem Reap restaurants, and the staff was so friendly and helpful. The owners of Journeys Within are a fascinating young couple who not only run a very successful hotel but also give back to the community through a school they have built next to their B&B. I can't think of any better way to get to know Siem Reap and Angkor Wat than with the help of Leap Lam and Journeys Within.
