On our way back from Banteay Srei (our favorite temple of all) this is an 30-45 stop and a stark reminder of the years of brutality faced by the Cambodian people. Frightening you learn just how many land mines are still out there.

The Cambodia Landmine Museum was founded by Aki Ra, a former child soldier of the Khmer Rouge who went on to devote his adult life to defusing landmines around Cambodia. The museum is only partly a testament to his work, however, and also details the major points of Cambodian history that introduced such destructive weaponry.

The museum is open air and a bit dusty at times, but the exhibits are well-signed in English. We learned a lot from the 45 minutes or so we spent there. Particularly in comparison to other museums in Cambodia, this one is surprisingly well-done and really worth your time. It's also right on the road to Banteay Srey, and so makes for an easy stop either before or after seeing the temple.

The museum is also affiliated with an orphanage that Aki Ra now runs, and some of the older children work in the museum. This seems to have upset some visitors, but I found it an appropriate merging of interests. Contrary to other reports, we experienced no pressure whatsoever to offer a donation (beyond the minimal entrance free to the museum).

Thank you for the very nice review. However, I do have to correct one statement. The people who work in the Museum are NOT the childreen supported at the Relief Center. All the staff at the Museum are adults, and are paid a living wage.

The Relief Center, a home for at-risk village children supports kids who are landmine victims, contracted polio in years past, were born with physical disabilities and are HIV positive. Some are orphans. Some were abandoned, and some come from poor families. all attend local schools, are tutored in an on-site school, attend English language classes, and computer classes. They have a library, an art program, a playground and are fed clothed and cared for by a staff of 14; all Khmer.

Tourists are not allowed into the childrens home, and we fully support the program:

The kids will occasionally come up fron to see their friends on staff. But they do not work at the Museum.

Though a small museum, the Cambodian Landmine Museum is very powerful. Aki Ra is a noble man - a former layer of mines as a child, he has now cleared over 50,000 landmines from Cambodia. Physically there isn't much to see (piles of dead landmines and some examples of weaponry), however, if you stop to read the all the stories, you will never quite be the same. It is a fair drive (particularly in a tuk-tuk) so I might not choose to make the long trek to just visit the museum. Instead combine it with a trip to Banteay Srei as it's right on the way.

i disagree with previous reviews that a visit here is a waste of time.
When you read the literature that is available in the various rooms you can then build a picture of how the people of Cambodia suffered during the war years under a brutal regime.
Aki Ra has over the years dedicated his life to rid the country of these landmines and the donations that visitors made have been used to help the victims of these horrific weapons.
And if for that reason only it is worthy of donations made by visitors and would urge visitors to the temples not to drive by it on the way back.
It is also worrying the number of counties that still make landmines that injure between 10,000 to 20,000 people each year

I'm really glad we stopped at the landmine museum on the way back from Banteay Srey. It's important to reflect on the tragedy that occurred in Cambodia and the havoc landmines continue to cause. The museum is a testament to the good people can do in the face and aftermath of such horror.

We appreciated the commentary and explanation we received from the older American gentleman who works at the museum (sorry we didn't catch your name) and fully endorse the sentiment that children are not tourist attractions!! This is really important people so please think before you visit an orphanage or take photos of kids at the temples/in the street. Would this be appropriate behaviour in your home country?
