“Central Location, Luxury and Comfort Defined”
Reviewed 15 January 2013

We spent three days at the hotel in December, around Christmas. The room was large, spacious, aesthetically done and very comfortable. The bathroom was large with a tub and a separate shower area. The mustard finish gave a very warm, welcoming feel to it. We had a city view room so it did not overlook the pool but had a terrace on one side and a view of the road on the other. The box TV was a letdown. Who uses those anymore??? Turn down service was only on request. The outdoor pool is a hub of activities. The only thing is that it is surrounded by rooms on three sides with balconies. So you always have people sitting out and peering at you. At the same time, when people sit on their balconies, they have a perpetual audience. We were there on Christmas Eve, but there wasn't even a chocolate left in the room for us, let alone a gift. Usually when we stay at hotels on Christmas Eve, the hotel always leaves a small (token) gift, which my daughter really looks forward to. So she was very disappointed. Another big downer was the Christmas Eve Dinner. The cultural show by the pool side was nice, followed by a band playing largely old or classical music, which made for a rather sedate and boring Christmas Eve party. The hotel insisted that we had to pay for and take the Gala Dinner, which we had no problems with. But despite informing them in advance, when we made the booking and also when we checked in, that we were vegetarians, the large buffet spread had NO vegetarian options. Mr Houn Samedi, the manager in charge, was kind enough to get some soup, salad, veg curry and rice made and served to us; but the meal was definitely not worth the top dollars they had charged us for it and we felt cheated. The hotel is very centrally located. Most sights are close by, as are the Old, New, Night Markets and Pub Street. The hotel has its own tuk tuks if you are not upto walking anywhere.

The location, service, and charm of this hotel are all terrific. My family stayed in two connecting rooms for five days in January 2013. We had never been to Siem Reap before, and I had had some difficulty deciding where to stay. I finally chose this hotel based on its proximity to the city center and the reasonable discount I was getting. Location turned out to be a very good reason to stay here. Many of the other 4-5 star hotels are lined up practically on top of each other on the "great white way" of Highway 6 at the edge of the city. They are all huge and new, but we were immediately turned off by the cookie cutter, over the top tourist look of everything. And they're pretty far out from where you want to be for restaurants and markets. Sokha Angkor stands alone in a great location close enough for a walk into the market area or a very short Tuk Tuk ride.

The building has an old charm that is particularly evident at night when the lights come on. The pool area is really beautiful and stylish without being over the top, and the courtyard feel of the rooms around the pool is lovely. We enjoyed sitting out in early evening having a drink and watching the lights come up on the hotel as the kids got in a late swim before heading out for dinner.

Some people have commented that the hotel needs a face lift. Not much of one, really. It could do with some newer tubs, (still the old ones are beautiful stone) and some fresh carpet in the hallways, and the couches in the lobby are getting a bit old. But this has all the feel of a grand old hotel, with room doors that are heavy and beautiful, and a lobby reminiscent of French Cambodia. The rooms are enormous by any standard. The longer we stayed the more beautiful it seemed to become to us, especially when we saw the newer tourist hotels going up everywhere.

The breakfast was very good, as was the service and prices overall. The spa was also very nice. If you book on line at the hotel website you get some nice perks, like free massages, etc. My family fell in love with Siem Reap and definitely with this hotel.

One note - some of the hotels advertise that they're the "closest to the ancient sites of Angkor Wat." Avoid them! That means that the hotel is in the middle of nowhere, unless you want to stay on top of the ruins and have a long ride into the town.

Room Tip: Recommend a room facing the pool, as these have very nice balconies and the view at night when the l...

this was our first stop in our honeymoon trip. hotel gave us a warm reception. room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. pros: clean facilities, huge outdoor pool with fountains shaped like statues from the temples, spa experience and facilities, good breakfast buffet, good location (close to temples, airport and walking distance to the old market and pub street but felt far from the craze), helpful concierge.
cons: thin walls, limited staff (one serving pool and bar area)
Overall we had a good experience with this hotel and we would recommend this to friends.

Sokha is a classic high-quality hotel/resort. I wouldn't call it five-star, but doubtlessly four-and-a-half. The lobby is big and pretty and they make sure it smells like a spa, which really does enhance the first impression, and brings a feeling of luxury.

The staff is abundant and service-minded, helping out with table and other reservations anywhere. The breakfast is very nice. Again, not five stars, but close.

The pool area is good. We were there in peak season, but it was almost always possible to get places. The pool menue was a bit average, but we could live with that.

The fitness center is good and clean.

As for the room, we had a pool facing room on the short side. It was good-enough, but a bit anonymous and lacking the feeling of luxury, which would have been welcome, but would have required better bedding, a bit more thought put into the impression and (the most substantial alteration reqired - a fancier, less average, bathroom. we had booked thinking that all rooms had a balcony, which is not the case - only those on the long sides do. Would happily go back to Sokha, but would opt for a balcony room. Like others have written: preferably on one of the top floors and doubtlessly paying extra for a pool-facing one (Sokha is in a really quite trafficed crossing, but we didn't hear the traffic, which is something I'm very sensitive about.

Room Tip: As for the room, we had a pool facing room on the short side. It was good-enough, but a bit anonymou...

We just returned from a 5 night stay at the Sokha and found the whole experience pleasant and relaxing.
Even though the hotel was fully booked fthe staff seemed to cope well under the pressure.
Room: we had a deluxe suite over looking the pool (ask for non-smoking as hotel still accommodates smoking). Very spacious and clean.
Breakfast buffet: caters for asian amd western alike. Good spread.
Pool and other facilities: very good. Boys(5&7) had a great time around pool and fishing ponds.
Restaurant: had dinner once at restaurant and it was adequate. Visited pub street and other restaurants other evenings
Concierge: excellent in arranging tuk-tuks, day-outings etc
Staff: very professional, friendly and always willing to help!

Room Tip: Pool facing, non-smoking and pre 4/5 floor

Very good hotel but I'm not entirely sure if it's 5-star material. In any case, the rooms are very clean, service is good, and location is excellent. However, one thing about Sokha is that since they have difficulties speaking English, they had a mixup and called my parent's room at 1am asking to fix their water leak when there was none. Needless to say, they lost a good night's rest over that.

Other than this, I really like the service of Sokha and would recommend staying there especially if you wish to take many days to visit the Temples.

Room Tip: Get the Club Suite since that has ample space and is relatively the same price as the Pool View Doub...

This hotel provides an excellent base for Angkor Wat and other sightseeing in the Siem Reap area. It is clean and modern but fails to live up to its luxury/5 star marketing. We used the pool, which was nice and not too busy. The spa was excellent and I would highly recommend having a massage there. The staff are extremely helpful when it comes to sorting out drivers and tuk tuks, restaurant bookings and advice for sightseeing. However when it comes to problems in the room they are not very good at all. We opened our minibar fridge on our final day to get some water only to discover the decomposing remnants of a cake in there, presumably left by the previous occupants of our room. I pointed this out first of all to the man at reception who seemed to think that I wanted to eat the cake and then to the front office manager but he did not see the problem at first either. It was only when I pointed out that housekeeping ought to check the fridge and dispose of food left behind that a lightbulb seemed to come on! So while this hotel makes a good base for exploring the area, do not think that you will be staying somewhere luxurious where you will want to spend a lot of time.
