“Great Hotel”
Reviewed 9 April 2014

We spent 7 lovely relaxing nights here, what a beautiful hotel.
Beautiful building and furnishings, with the best pool in any hotel we have stayed in .
With a large room over looking the pool we couldn"t have been more comfortable.
The restaurant was first class, which was made so by the great staff who enjoyed as we did a chat,we learned alot about Cambodia from them.
Very highly recommended.

It was my first time in Siem Reap and when I stepped into Royal Angkor Wat, everything about the hotel set the mood for my trip. Management made sure you felt like you were in Cambodia. On the walls hung paintings, carvings or photographs all about or of Cambodian culture. The tables had colorful jars with floating lotus flowers. The women had their hair tied in a bun with a flower behind their ear. Even the housekeeping staff were dressed in typical Cambodian garb.

I felt even happier when I opened the door to my room. The room was spacious, nicely turned queen sized bed (fluffy pillows, lovely mattress), clean closets, safe, mini bar and a terrace that overlooks the pond in the front of the hotel. The bath and toilet was very well maintained with their spotless fixtures and ball and claw footed tub.

There was a little dish on the snack table by the terrace door with local fruit on it that became my midnight snack. I sank softly into the bed after a good shower and had a good nights sleep.

Every morning I would wake up and there would be a Khmer boy playing traditional music on their version of a xylophone. He would smile demurely as I said good morning. The breakfast buffet would always have the regular staples of bread, cheese, fruit, oatmeal...but they would change some things which gives variety for those who stay more than two days at the hotel like I did.

The staff was very helpful. They would make an effort to converse with you and from there suggest places for you to go. They're also very mindful of your safety. Make sure to check out their shuttle schedule so it saves you time AND money getting around Siem Reap.

Their spa is ok. Their massage service was good enough. I preferred using the internet service there than the hotel proper.

Room Tip: BTW don't expect much with regards to internet service. Don't blame the hotel, it's eve...

We had a very relaxed stay at the hotel, staff very friendly and helpful, but limited on food choice but excellent service, we were upgraded on arrival to pool view with jacuzzi hot tub at no charge, took one of the hotel cars for tour of sites and were also provided with a free drive to the boat harbour. One word of caution do not be tempted with a trip to the floating village, this is purely a scam, you are coerced into buying a $55 bag of rice for a suspect orphanage we wished we had researched this as it is clearly a scam for tourists, shame really as all of the other people we met were kind and friendly, stick to the historical sites and avoid the boats !!

After a delayed departure, I arrived to Siem Reap expecting a car pickup organised by the hotel. I was informed by my friend, who arrived earlier in the day, that the hotel could not organise a car pickup after 11pm; this was not a fault of the hotel, but it's good to know. Upon arriving, the front desk knew exactly who I was, so check-in was very easy. The morning breakfast was a great variety of foods, although without much representation of local cuisine; the highlights were the deliciously ripe fresh fruit, and the omelette bar with all styles of eggs available upon request. The pool was a huge plus, specifically its size, and that it was quite unoccupied in the mornings; food by the poolside was also quite refreshing, delicious and not too pricey. The hotel offers to organise transportation for you to view the temples, but we found it was around 20% cheaper to find your own tuk tuk from downtown; we did use the hotel car service for exploring Phnom Kuleh. The free shuttle transportation into downtown was a huge help to us as it allowed us to explore easily and not feel the stress of having to barter with a random tuk tuk driver every time you wanted to go back. The driver was safe and also very diligent on making sure all of the guests who registered were on the shuttle before departing. We had one mix-up with the hotel where we had asked for breakfast boxes to take with us when we were going to watch the sunrise at Angkor Wat, and the breakfast restaurant didn't open until after we had departed. We arrived downstairs on time, but the breakfast was not ready, and we waited 20 minutes only to receive some fruit and stale baked items from the next day. It was clear that the staff had forgotten to prepare, as the time it took us to wait was enough time to assemble the breakfast. Overall, the hotel provided good quality, above average, basic necessities. The staff could be a bit more trained. Overall interactions were friendly, but not necessarily exceeding expectations.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the pool, otherwise you'll look out onto the street.

This hotel is listed as 5 star and you often wonder whether what you will get is as listed in a country such as Cambodia. In my view the Royal Angkor is very much 5 star in pretty much all regards. Included in the room rate (which was exceptionally good value) was pick up and drop off at the airport. So the start of our trip was being met at the airport with our name on a board, which is something my wife always likes! On arrival at the hotel we were upgraded to a deluxe room overlooking the magnificent pool. We then spend the next few hours by the said pool relaxing. It is a beautiful and quiet pool.

Next day we arranged a trip to the temples through the hotel and this was all sorted without issue. Whilst slightly more than the independent tours I felt comforted that the hotel had sorted in advance for me via email communication. At the end of a days touring we decided to use the hotel Spa. This was 2 hours of total relaxation and a great way to wind down.

All in all, of the 6 hotels we stayed at on our trip this was perhaps the best value overall. A lovely place, with attentive staff, good food and great Spa. The only very slight negative was the shower, which was in the form of a shower hose on the taps of the freestanding bath. You were expected to put this on the wall and the issue was it mean't water went all over the floor as the bath did not go back to the wall. A minor gripe for what was in all other ways a great place.

The hotel is clean, breakfast is very good, lots of variety, huge pool, excellent staff. Shuttle bus to city, very close, or 15 mins in Tuk Tuk, $3. Lots of variety of food in town at night, cheap. Not far to be driven to all Temple Sites, recommend having a guide, fascinating history.

Room Tip: Hotel is set back from road, and we faced the road, but no noise at all, once doors on to little bal...
