Majestic Oriental Hotel

Place was really good, the pool area is fantastic, really pretty. the only problem we had was the airconditioning cut out several times through the night. Apart from that is was a great place to stay not to far away from the main shopping and dining areas, just a 5 mins tuk tuk ride.

This hotel looks like a great big Victorian pile but is, in fact, probably only about 15 years old which gives it a certain Disney-ish quality.
It's certainly impressive on arrival, a welcome oasis after dodging the inevitable scams at the Poiphet border crossing.
The bedrooms are huge, well eqipped and very comfortable - if a shade fusty. The Majestic is absolutely huge but we never encountered more than half a dozen guests at a time.....a mystery!
Staff were particularly helpful, especially when the mini bus failed to arrive to take us to the bus station for our onward journey to Phnom Penh. Reception made around 5 'phone calls on our behalf for which there was no extra charge.
The buffet breakfast was adequate, obviously geared more towards an oriental audience than to a western one but it was fine and the staff were ever attentive.
The only downside was that it was a fair distance from the centre of Siem Reap with all its restaurants. But not really a problem as we always managed to negotiate a $2 Tuk Tuk fare, well worth it for the peace and quiet of the location.
The indoor pool was an unexpected bonus.
All this for $24 a night for the 2 of us!
We spent a month in Thailand and Cambodia and the Majestic Angkor was the best value we encountered. I'd certainly go again.
Also recommended is the Paul Dubrule Jardin des Delices Hotel School & restaurant for a 5 * lunch at 2* prices. (Monday to Friday)

Although the elaborate Cambodian carving gives the lobby of this hotel an air of old-fashioned distinction we found several problems. Firstly, we could not sleep. Our group was given rooms on the 5th floor - and the water pump kept working above our heads all night - no one could sleep. Do not accept rooms on this floor unless you inspect them first! In the middle of the night we couldn't stand it any longer and moved to a smaller room - not fully cleaned - but quieter.
We did not like the fact that: internet access was not free, the gift shop in the photos does not exist, the hotel is not within walking distance to anything, a western breakfast choice (eggs or cheese) requires a special request, the pool was too highly chlorinated.
Not recommended.

After 1 horrific night at the Claremont Angkor, we checked out early and found this gem.

My view when travelling is to at least learn basics such as hello, thanks and goodbye. When we arrived and said hello, they upgraded us to their best suite. A plush room with divan and furniture alongside a double bed, large bathroom and a separate study room!

The views towards Angkor Wat at night are great; the hotel is about 5 mins from town but the whole point of somewhere like Siem Reap is to use tuk-tuks to get around. Don't bother using different guys, just stick to one driver, hire him for your stay and he'll bend over backwards to accommodate.

The hotel pool is cold, but it was 37 degrees outside, so it wasn't an issue; in fact, the indoor pool looks like some archaic Roman Bath, very pretty.

The staff were wonderful - even on New Year's Eve some of them had to miss the hotel party and serve us dinner; the food was good and the service friendly.

Our tuk tuk driver Sra-pon (honestly, that was his name) was so friendly; for 3 days I gave the guy $20 each day and he drove us around the city, around the temple complexes, took us to town for food at night and drove us home afterwards. The level of poverty a lot of the drivers try to live beyond is helped by tourists using them for their stay. Don't keep changing drivers, that's when they'll try to bump up the price and you'll end up paying more overall.

Siem Reap is a wonderful place; I will always have fond memories of this hotel and the town in general.

TIPS:
Stick to the same driver! - I would suggest you use the same guy who takes you from the bus station into town; he will be grateful for the ongoing custom. Don't use the hotel tuk tuk guys
Book this hotel through www.latestays.com - we paid £30 a night!!!!
Go to Siem Reap night market and stick your feet in the special massage pool called Doctor Fish. Trust me, this is a brilliant experience, wish they had Doctor Fish in the UK
If going to and from Siem Reap, book the top bus company. The buses are Japanese built, have working (clean) toilets and are far better than the trains of Vietnam and Thailand
