“Three-star hotel, extra star for the view.”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

The Costaustralis is clean, comfortable, and in its public rooms at least, spacious. The staff are correct without greeting you like old buddies or going out of their way. The rooms are modest in size compared to what we had become used to in Chile; we had one with what was euphemistically called a city view, which is a novel way of referring to someone's back garden. The breakfast was very ordinary.

All of that sounds like straight-down-the-middle three stars, 'average' in the good sense (I've said elsewhere in my entries that there is no shame in being average). What lifts the Costaustralis is the public area. That area - the lounge, the bar - is light and spacious, tastefully decorated in a nicely banked-down way, and the view over Last Hope Sound, particularly in the morning or at sunset, is a thing of wonder. You can sit and watch the sun go down behind the snow-streaked peaks of Patagonia, tell yourself that you're almost at the end of the world, and wonder how it felt to be Magellan sailing through these parts five hundred years ago (all right, he wasn't precisely here, but near enough) and having not the first idea what was going to be round the next corner. He didn't have a gin and tonic in his hand and a bowl of complimentary nuts, poor sod, but you do.

In my opinion this hotel is very close to a 5 points rating. The rooms are spacious, well decorated, good quality furniture, very friendly and efficient staff.
oh and the location... just perfect!
and the views from the bedroom... incredible!
it is also 4 blocks away from the Plaza de armas where you can find good restaurants.
the living areas are phenomenal! plenty of reading areas enjoying the sunset over the lake.
It lacks frigobar in the room and more importantly the breakfast is weak.
although is well appointed, it lacks variety a lot. I was expecting more in this area and thus I cannot give it a 5 point rating.
No pool either.

Stayed here for one night. Nice common areas and breakfast was fine. Rooms are decent enough, with nice, heated bathrooms. I did hoeever request a double, yet enddd up with two single beds.. Great views of the water and very close to the town. Would recommend.

First of all, ask for Mauricio Trujillo to get local directions and recommendations. We contacted the hotel by mail to place the reserve and we were helped by Mauricio, who always went the extra mile to make our stay welcome. Mauricio arranged the transfer from Punta Arenas airport to the bus terminal, the bus tickets, and from the bus terminal in Natales to the hotel and several tour options that we would have had to do by ourselves. And the same on the way back to Punta Arenas, tickets, tours, everything. He also arranged the final transfer from the Cabo de Hornos (another Australis hotel in Punta Arenas) to the airport. So, if you are considering to stay in Natales in the Costa Australis, Mauricio is your man. Plus, for the number of days we were going to stay he upgraded us to a suite - excellent. Besides that he's a very nice person.

The hotel is fine for a four-star, with a very friendly and courteous personnel. Decoration has echoes of nature and rustic accents. Didn't spend much time on the lobby or waiting areas, obviously, I went to Natales to visit and to see the city.

You have two room choices: water or city view. If you're planning to spend outside all days, maybe it's wise to save a little and choose city view. I stayed on a water view room and it's an incredible view.

My only complaint would be the invariable breakfast options every single day. If you're through with scrambled eggs, you can ask the kitchen for an omelette or sunny side up eggs, and they will probably be able to produce something else for you.

The placement is great, shoreside and close to the city center, very close to fine restaurants and dining places, a museum and craft stores.

Finally, my verdict: they're working hard to move up on the ranking of the Natales hotels, and they're very motivated to go the extra mile unasked.

I will return to Natales and will stay again in the Costa Australis, because despite all shortcomings and little details, the price/quality ratio is high.

The hotel was beautiful. The public areas were amazing and we had a beautiful view from our room. Bathroom was perfect; both a bath and shower and plenty of room for two people to unpack their toiletries. Plenty of outlets for all the modern electronics for two people. Breakfast was plentiful and served early enough that we had plenty of time to eat and still make the boat for the Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers which left almost across the street. They had a gated parking area where they let us leave our car even after we checked out while we took the boat tour.

So why not rate it higher? We arrived 20 minutes before scheduled check-in time and our room wasn't ready. Fair enough. We waited and it still was ready and they said another half hour. Ok that happens but they didn't, for example, offer us a drink in the bar or coffee while we waited. Which brings me to my final point. Puerto Natales is a town that consists of mostly backpacking hostels. Hotel choices are quite limited. There seem to be new boutiques opening, however. The Costaustralis charges rates that are higher than I am willing to pay in either NYC or London. I don't see how that is sustainable and at that price the experience should be flawless but it wasn't!

Room Tip: Get a water view room. The rates for all rooms are high so if you are spending this much already pa...

The hotel has rooms for front (lake view) and rooms to the back (city view) , is well located , close to stores and restaurants. From the hotel to Torres del Paine entrance's is about an hour and a half trip in roads with goods conditions. The view from the bar and restaurant to the lake is very beautiful, it is very nice to take a glass of wine or pisco sour watching the sunset . The rooms are large and clean . Breakfast very simple, with very few items compared to the same hotel in Punta Arenas. The staff are generally helpful and polite. In the front desk there was a woman of small stature, dark-rimmer glasses and short black hair with a bad humor every day. I asked for help to make reservation on the boat ride on Grey Lake, she told me the wrong time and wrong price. I asked for help to find a place to ride a horse with my wife and kid. She did nothing. I have ordered a fridge in my room (yes, there is no fridges in the rooms) and I left a card on the door so it does not turn off when I leave, but the maid every day took the card that I made. The conditioner that was left in the room (only after I asked for) was expired (!!). The maid did not change shampoo and condition that were used, only when they were empty. The hotel is good, but needs to improve in certain details .
