“Minimalist hotel with a Maximalist price”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 March 2010

This was a very disappointing experience. We checked in and were luckey to get someone to help us with our luggage to our room.We were told nothing about te Hotel or the activties or our room. Much different then what I had read about. We found a small card in the room that said to meet in the bar At seven to find out about the next days activities. We went to the front desk and asked where is the bar . The manager came over and I told her that I was treated shabbly and she did apologize . This is a minimalist hotel with a maximalist price. The rooms are fair, but the view from the window was wonderfull. the food is O.K. The guides are good but not great. Our friends had recommended the Explora, this hotel is not in the same class. The drivers were very good,. I would NOT recommend this hotel

Out of several hotels we stayed in during our trip to Chile and Argentina, I probably have the most mixed feelings about Remota. The location and the hotel itself are gorgeous, but are also somewhat cold and imposing, so the hotel certainly blends with the environment. We booked the full board package which turned out to be the right way to go as all meals and each day's excursion were included, which made for an uncomplicated and relaxing stay in a far-off place. All meals were very good and the dining room offered them during generous time windows. Service was very good, including the manager who, although her manner came off a little forced at times, was readily available for any needs. The excursions and guides we had were excellent.
My misgivings about the hotel are mostly based on some weird idiosyncracies: the beautiful slate floors throughout the hotel don't exactly lend to a quiet and peaceful envirornment, the window between the bathroom and bedroom is plain stupid, and the firepits in the lobby lounge and dining room, when lit, throw off smoke to the point where your clothes smell like you were sitting in front of a campfire all evening.
Still, I would certainly consider staying at Remota again. Despite the few negatives it turned out to be a highlight of our trip and the location is great especially if you'd prefer being close to Puerto Natales rather than an even more far-off spot.

Patagonia (the Argentinien part as well as the Chilenian part) in itself is a spectacular region to visit - great nature, lightening, animals, lonesome areas etc.
The Remota Hotel in Puerto Natales offers besides the "given" great national parc Torres del Paine a very pleasant environment through an excellent service, great food, customized excursions (e.g. we traveled with our five year old daughter and the hiking tours or hourse riding was always lots of fun and pleasure). The rooms are very convinient, beds are very comfortable. If possible, stay longer and you may enjoy a very comfortable hotel (see also huge space and extraordinary architecture) and also relax from the overwhelming impressions of the Patagonia area.

Remota was wonderful. When we walked in it felt like I had gone to heaven and back. The design is fab. The bedrooms are spacious and there are plenty of places to hideaway. It is really airy. The pool has amazing views with sauna's attached.

But what made Remota great were the staff. Always friendly but relaxed ie not over the top. Nothing was too much for them. There weren't many people when we were there so we got fantastic personalised service. What ever trips we wanted to do we could. I would though not bother with the boat trip to the Glacier as it took for ever as one engine broke on the way back, but we still had a laugh.

We went to a Gaucho show which was great but the highlight was the trek to TP natiional park. We had a great group and Alvaro the guide was really thoughtful to all the people that were there whose ages ranged from 11 to 50, (there were 7 of us in the group. At the end we picknicked on a vast rock with the most amazing views.

The food was good and I was happy that there was not a vast menu but a well chosen one. Thanks Micky and Alecia for great food and service and a good laugh Gordita.

The rooms were fab and enormous.

Thank you for a wonderful time.

My girlfriend and I were on the last leg of a 7,000km motorcycle ride through Chile and Argentina. As a treat we booked ourselves into Remota for two nights on Expedia at $400 / night. This was not the inclusive package with tours, we had to pay an additional $250 per person for expeditions.

I can say the the hotel was gorgeous. If you are a fan or design and architecture you will love this place. The house manager was also very friendly and always smiling and trying to make sure you were enjoying yourself. And the location - stunning. We also thought the food was excellent and the waiters very helpful and knowledgeable. The wine could have been a bit better but we had no complaints in that area.

The cons as we saw them were as follows:
1) On checking in and checking out we had numerous bags, helmets, and so on. They simply watched us hauling them from the driveway to the lobby and never offered to help. Same situation on checkout. Definitely left a bad taste

2) We paid $500 to have a guide take us on a hike with about 5 other people. The guide had little or no interest in stopping and explaining anything that we were seeing to us and just marched us along as fast as we could... and at about 3.5 hours each way that is pretty hard work. My guess is that they are so tired of doing the same route all the time they have lost enthusiasm. I might as well have driven to the park and hiked on my own and saved hundreds of dollars as we got essentially no information or insight. Be warned - I have also read other reviews and seen similar complaints.

3) While beautiful the rooms in my opinion might be a little overdesigned. Please note that this is a personal opinion as many people might like windows on the bathroom to the bedroom so you have no privacy. Is that really necessary?

It is a beautiful hotel and you will enjoy your stay. If they can sort of some issues with their guides and check-in / out it probably would have warranted five stars.

I dont think Remota is worth the money. If it was substantially less expensive, than it would warrant a 4 star rating. But at the prices that they are charging, you expect more.
The hotel does boast incredible views, and we very much enjoyed the design of the hotel. The staff too were very helpful and friendly. We did have one major issue. We took a horseback riding excursion. As was explained to us, we would be riding to the top of the mountain, and than trekking down. Our group consisted of 8 people. We ended up riding, non stop, for 4 hours. We passed some incredible scenery on the way, and it would have been nice to stop and take photos. But our guide was oblivious to everything. About 2/3 of the way into the ride, my legs could no longer take the pain from the straps, and the constant grinding from the saddle. I was in so much pain that i wanted to jump off the horse. but i couldnt. we had to make it to our lunch spot. There were teenagers in our group, and their legs were also hurting. But the guide could care less. It was a though he was on some kind of time mission. All in all the horse back ride was enjoyable for the first hour and a half. The other 2 and a half hours we were just hoping for it to end.
On the way down, we expected a nice scenic trek. Or else what would be the point of this excursion? Well, with our guide, we would have none of that. He sped up in front of the group, without explaining a thing that we saw along the way. We all just had to follow him down. At one point one of the teenage kids fell down. The guide was 80 meters in front of us, clueless to what just happened in the back. Luckily the kid was alright. But what if he wasnt?
i could expect this kind of an excursion if I am not paying a lot for it. But at this price, I should have high expectations. Perhaps if we had a different guide, we would have had a better experience.
Upon our return back to the hotel, we ran into the manager. We explained what happened, and she saw how much pain my wife was in. she had giant red bruises on her calfs. And they were swollen. She gave zero sympathy. Her response was, "yea you should really ask a lot of questions when deciding on these incursions". Excuse me? Isnt it their job to explain to us what we would encounter? I also found her to be very fake. She comes off as nice, but I can see that its not really in her.

Food- I wouldnt call it exceptional, but it was not bad. The presentation was really nice. I think they could have done better with the wine selection. Chile has some amazing wines that are not that expensive.

Afterward we headed to Cliffs Reserve Patagonia. Now that is a five star establishment, and worth every penny.

Remota is a comforting haven in the middle of the harsh Patagonian landscape. The staff is friendly, the food is delicious, and the trekking is superb and unique in this world. Remota offers the best of both worlds: the wilderness and beauty of Patagonia, and all the comfortable ammenities for after you get done with your trekking. The staff is extremely friendly and they all speak English. The hotel manager Maria Jose was a joy to be with and always concerned with our well being. The excursions are well planned by the guides that know Patagonia like it's their own personal backyard. The only problem with Remota?? It's too far away from NY!!
