I really enjoyed this hotel, its decoration and design is an equilibrated and beautiful mix of modern and native elements - it definetely has "good vibes". The dormitory and bathroom were simple but had all the elements I needed for a very pleasant stay. The reception and restaurant staff were very fiendly and helpful, and the food was delicious. Nevertheless some people could find this hotel too minimalistic so more conventional travelers should look for other option. One also has to take into account the hotel is 5 min out of town so visiting Puerto Natales need a short taxi ride. I did not care about this since I prefer more far-from-civilization places.

I note the 11 other reviewers had positive vibes on this hotel. Therefore, I accept I've probably got this wrong. As an old fart of 66 I like my creature comforts. This includes carpets, curtains, well-lit rooms, etc. My room had all the accessories but none of the comforts. The room was warm enough, but I felt cold - especially in the bathroom. Fine for one night but, for me, no longer.

My mother, sister and I chose the Altiplanico Sur because of their package offer: three nights with 3 breakfasts and 3 dinners , and two all day excursions with lunch included in a triple room for U$S 700 per person. However, if you do not choose the package, the price per night of a triple room with breakfast is U$S 260.
Another reason why we chose the hotel was that it was located outside the town of Puerto Natales, across the road from the fjord, with splendid views of the mountains.
The hotel design did not let us down. If you are tired of hotel rooms that look alike, if you want to experience something different that you will not forget, and if you like unusual decorations, then this is certainly the hotel for you. Add to this the views from the rooms, the bathrooms (yes, you have see-through ceiling-to-floor windows there too, but you cannot be seen from the outside) and the public areas, and it will be a great experience. There is no luxury, the decorations are clever but not expensive, you might lack ordinary conveniences like a closet with doors to it, or you might consider that the modern sink in the bathroom does not match the kitchen faucet used, but the truth is that all the details were considered to provide original, if low-cost, decorations. Glass lamps, mirrors, masks, stone, cement, adobe covering of walls, tree branches, wrought iron: all of this goes into the decor. The result is stunning. The architect and interior decorator must have had a lot of fun designing the hotel and the rooms.
There are no TV sets in the rooms, but there is a sitting room with one. There is no mini-fridge in the room, but you can get complimentary tea, herbal infusions, coffee, and flavoured water from the restaurant all day long.
There are two open-air jacuzzis with great views through glass walls, but we did not use them because it was rather cold in the evening.
The breakfast buffet provided everything you might want, and you could even have eggs cooked the way you preferred them if you did not fancy the scrambled fare with bacon cubes offered.
The three dinners we had were excellent, although in one case the servings of the main course were rather scanty (looked like they had miscalculated the number of diners).
Of the two excursions, the one over land to Torres del Paine National Park was exceptional. We had a van with a driver and a guide all to ourselves.
The second excursion was a navigation on the Ultima Esperanza sound, with approaches to two glaciers and lunch at a ranch. That was all right, but rather conventional.
If you ask me, you are better off booking the hotel rooms and then choosing your own excursion. Of course, that will mean no José or Víctor!
As regards the hotel staff, we were not so happy with the two foreign girls who were in charge of reception and dining room. The reception girl did fine with the check-in and calling a taxi, but was ignorant of the hotel excursion package so that when we checked in and asked about the timetable for the excursions she answered we had to check that with our agency!! One would think that at the price we paid we would be awaited with a printed schedule of activities...
A similar thing happened with the dining room. The first night, there was an attempt to charge us for the meal. I had to explain that it was included in our hotel package. They should have known that. The second night it was useless to try to explain to the public relations girl that my mother would be grateful if they could substitute the spiced fish and rice for grilled fish and boiled rice. She said it was impossible. We were rescued by the waitress, who was Chilean, and saw that we got what we wanted.
A last warning: there is a sloping ramp and two flights of stairs to go down to the rooms from dining room and reception. Not suitable for people with reduced mobility.
In spite of it all, it was an experience not to be missed and the positive points definitely outweighed the negative ones.

We stayed one night at the Altiplanico Sur and I have been surprised (in a positive way) by this hotel. Never stayed in a hotel like this. Great design, great furnishing... Amazing look. It's located outside town but it's ok for the view. Definitely worth staying there... liked it! Internet has not been working but looks like a temp downside...

We like
James Bond overall style of the architecture and the interiors
Style of rooms that mixes modern and post industrial flavour with Chilean tradition
Good size of rooms and bathrooms
Breakfast
Competitive cost compared to other options in the surrounding

We don't like
Few rooms can be noisy if guests wake up early and use their trolleys in the corridor.

What a treat. Indeed it is very zen. No cushy carpeting here. Everything is clean, concrete, efficient, but quite comfortable. Design of the hotel built into a hillside makes you want to explore the hotel's ramps and byways. Our room had a fabulous view of the lake. Away from what there is of town, quiet, serene, totally in the spirit of the area. Delicious food - dinner and breakfast. We were only there for one night, and it simply wasn't long enough. If you get a chance on your way to Torres del Paine, this is a very special place.

We stayed at this hotel in Oct 2006 during a tour of Patagonia. Great location if you are going to see Torres del Paine. Loved it! Fabulous and comfortable art-directed rooms in modernistic, almost Japanese style. It is different since it is built out of rammed- earth bricks and layered right into the hillside. Literally low-profile, you could almost miss it driving by. Great views of the sound and mountains. Very picturesque. The owners are very nice but not fluent in English. You can get by though. They serve a delicious breakfast in a sunny cheerful dining room. Dinner is served too, also very qood quality. You feel close to nature here. I wish we could have stayed there longer. I want to go back! Eat at the steak restarurant in town they recommend, it is out of this world (cant remember the name but they are known for grilled meats -something like Patagonia Grill)
