“A real working ranch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 December 2012

We spent half a day at Posada. We got time to spend with the owner and his visiting son from the US, who showed us around the ranch, including the operations of the shearing area.
Had some great grilled meat and wonderful time walking around the water. It was quiet and isolated and perfect for rejuvenating.

We spent two nights at Estancia Rio Verde on our way to Torres del Paine. We were the only guests for the first day and the next day there were 2 or 3 more guests. We had read about the peacefulness of this place and we found it to be relaxing and enjoyable. The rooms are very basic. In the hallway was a large container of drinkable water as the water in the bathrooms was not. Electricity is “on” until 11:30pm. The Patagonian air was chilly and the winds were kicking up. But we were dressed in layers and felt warm. Hot tea is always available in the restaurant and we made use of it to ward off the chill. We drove about the Seno Skyring and at one time the wind was so strong that I had to battle to open the car door! When we were ready to return to our room # 4 for the evening, both the room and the radiators were cold. I found someone who flipped a switch and within 15 minutes both radiators were getting warm. The tiny bathroom never really got warm. But at dinner, we felt like the lord and lady of the manor as we were the only evening dinner guests sitting in front of a crackling fire. The owner, Sergio, introduced himself to us and we talked about the ranch with numbers of sheep somewhere more than 10,000. The next morning at breakfast Sergio came over and asked if I wanted to join him and a small work crew. Somewhere within their 5 – 6 km of underground water pipes, something was blocking the flow. I followed him in my SUV driving and bouncing across endless fields. They determined where the blockage was and after several hours of water pumping and cleaning, the pipes were once again flowing with water. We went back to the ranch and I treated myself with a piso sour. You come to Estancia Rio Verde for the pleasure of staying at a very remote sheep ranch and to breathe fresh air in beautiful natural surroundings.

I spent one night here on my way from El Calafate to Punta Arenas. We were lucky to have beautiful sunny skies during our stay and we took advantage of the weather to take a long hike out to the fjord.

The estancia itself has two guest buildings: the main building has about a dozen or so rooms as well as the dining room. I was lucky to have a room in the second house, which feels like a comfortable old sweater! The entire facility could be described as rustic, but it has a great deal of charm. My room was cozy with hardwood floors, down comforters and large windows. The bathroom was basic.

Both guest buildings have a common sitting room with fireplace and comfortable sofas and chairs. The dining room is rustic, with sheepskins covering all of the chair seats. There's a very large open firepit in the dining room, where the cook roasts all of the meat for lunch or dinner. Staff freely poured Chilean wine at lunch and dinner. Breakfast was plenty adequate.

There is a tiny onsite museum which has some interesting exhibits. We also witnessed sheep-shearing in the shed.

This is an interesting overnight stop on the long drive through Chile. I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed this visit - it was much better than I expected.

If you are looking for a remote beautiful location to escape from the crowds and rigours of modern life, this is the place for you. The hosts, a young couple looking after the ranch whilst the owners were away, were welcoming and friendly. Every effort was made to ensure we had a good stay. The room we were given at the top of the main building, was away from the coach groups, nice and roomy with a comfy bed and good views of the ranch. No TV which was not an issue, but the electricity was restricted to between 7pm and 10pm off season, not a place for those who want to use hair dryers and straighteners. Also not a place for vegetarians out of season, as the hearty food is cooked on an inside bbq and consists of lamb, sausage or by prior request, chicken! In season more vegetables would be available from the large vegetable garden. Good for long walks with noone else for miles, along the Sound and for bird watching. We also did a trip to see the penguins at Otway Sound, an hour's drive away. The ranch has a football pitch, horse riding, onsite museum and does rodeo shows in peak season!

This Estancia (ranch) is an authentic working sheep ranch. The rooms are basic, nothing fancy, and the bathrooms are adequite but quite small. But you come to the estancia for the experience, not the rooms. The breakfast/dinning room is cozy and charming with a big open pit where the asado is cooked and a pot belly stove with a fire. There was also a roaring fire in the asado pit. A small gift shop is located just off the dinning room with handmade/knitted shawls, hats, sweaters, postcards etc. All the food is home made even the bread and jam. Food was excellent and all the wine you wanted to drink was served with lunch and dinner. For dinner we had a wonderful, out of this world, asado which consisted of lamb, chicken, sausages and steak along with all the trimmings. Excellent! Sergio, who owns the ranch was there and he gave us a personal tour of the ranch along with sheep shearing and sheep dog demonstrations. There is also a small but very interesting museum and school on the property. The estancia consists of 40,000 acres, 10,000 sheep, 2,500 cattle and 250 horses and is located on a large salt water sound. The staff was excellent and the rooms very clean. The electrical power is produced by a generator and it is turned off at around 11PM at night. My room had a flashlight but other rooms didn't, so if you plan to stay here I would recommend you bring your own as it is really dark this far out in the country at night.

We stayed in this Lodge on our journey to Torres del Peine for unfortunately only one night. The rooms are very nice and individualy furnished as well as the Breakfast room. The Dining Room with a great open fire makes you feel like home. The staff is very friendly and helpful.
I can highly recommend this nice, calm Posada!

In late October 2008, I had the pleasure to visit this Posada about one hour north of Punta Arenas as part of a tour of Patagonia. This working Estancia dates to the late 1800s with many of the original working buildings in excellent condition. The windswept site lies along the Pacific Ocean with magnificent ocean and land vistas all around! The rooms are very comfortable with basic features (after all it is a working Estancia (Ranch)). Wonderful food is served up in the restaurant, featuring beef and lamb, cooked on spits over large fire pits in South American style. Hosts Josefina and Sergio oversee all of the operations! Guests are invited to walk around the property and watch the every day workings of this very active Estancia!

  • Liked — Its spectacular seaside location and vistas of the surrounding hills and bay.
  • Disliked — I had hoped to photograph the resident skunk but was unable to get close enough!
