“Basic and adequate”
Reviewed 5 March 2014 via mobile

The hotel is in a good location, only a couple of blocks from the main square, and it provides clean, basic rooms that are reasonably quiet (although I kept my earplugs close to the bed). The staff were helpful with info about tours and with arranging taxi pick up. I didn't mind the wall-mounted soap dispensers near the shower and near the sink, but some visitors may prefer small bars of soap and tubes of shampoo which can be requested if desired. I would stay there again.

My wife and I stayed at Hotel Don Rey Felipe for one night while en route to Puerto Natales. It is a nice, cozy hotel in Punta Arenas. It is walking distance to the city center. Unfortunately, we were there on an election day and most things were closed when we went walking about looking for somewhere to eat. We were forced to dine at the hotel for both lunch and dinner, which ended up being a pleasant surprise. We both had different dishes with Centolla that warmed the belly on a cold rainy day. All in all, the rooms were very nice and spacious, the food was excellent, and the staff was very nice. I would definitely recommend Hotel Don Rey Felipe.

We stayed at Hotel Rey Don Felipe twice on our trip to Patagonia, once with a reservation (we paid the full rate) and once without (an unscheduled overnight in Punta Arenas, checked in at 7:00 p.m. and got a 50% discount rate). Both times we found the spaces (common areas, bedroom, bathroom) comfortable and well maintained and the staff very friendly and helpful (particularly when it came to calling us taxis). We had no trouble with street or ambient noise on either night. The hotel offers free wi-fi and it worked very well.

The hotel is not "close" ("close" being a relative term since Punta Arenas is fairly small) to the central square, but it is still within easy walking distance of the square and most, if not all, restaurants in town. For those of you using Punta Arenas as a launching off point for Puerto Natales, the hotel IS a mere two blocks from the Buses Fernandez terminal, which was incredibly convenient.

Hotel Rey Don Felipe serves a nice breakfast every morning, with an assortment of regular and sweet breads, cereal, fruits, meat and cheese. It was on the upper end of the spreads we found throughout Chile on our trip, mainly because of the variety. Like most Chilean hotel breakfasts, this one emphasized sweet flavors.

Having paid both full and half price for our stays here, we felt that the full rate was a little expensive, but it may just be that non-hostel options in Patagonia tend to be more expensive than I'd like.

A quick overnight in Punta Arenas called for a simple, clean hotel. The premier hotels – Hotel Cabo de Hornos and Dreams del Estrecho - were out of my desired price range, so I landed on the Hotel Don Rey Felipe. It’s a hotel which would make Henry Wadsworth Longfellow quite proud. The esteemed author once wrote, “In character, in manner, in style, in all things, the supreme excellence is simplicity”. If this is the case, then the hotel exemplifies Longfellow's notion.

I arrived just after noon. The front desk associate was the most amiable I’ve encountered in quite awhile. After completing the documents, he called housekeeping to find out if a room was available. He then gave me the choice of two double beds now or one king bed later. A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush, so I seized the available room. He then gave me an area map and pointed out several attractions. I appreciated his consideration and recommendations. He was also apologetic when the initial room key did not work and quickly replaced it.

What initially struck me about the room was its simplicity. There were two double beds, a narrow desk, luggage rack, and a flat screen television. Lime green walls matched the pillows and throw. Wood trim created a headboard, surrounded the windows, and framed one of the photos. There was a wood desk and chair. The carpet was a faded brown. It wasn’t a color palette but a simple, well-orchestrated mix of three, soft colors. It worked. The earth tones and spartan furnishings matched the rustic surroundings.

The room was clean – enough. I noticed crumbs and dirt in multiple places. It was evident that the room was not vacuumed prior to my entry. Nor did it appear the room had been vacuumed in several stays. But this was the only miss in the cleaning department. The bathroom was aging but spotless. The shower doubles as a bathtub, so there’s a high threshold to ascend. I would highly recommend using the support bar, although there were landing grooves in place. The major drawback was that the bathroom was too simple. There’s simply not a place to put your accessories.

If the weather is not to your liking, there’s a plethora of English and Spanish stations. I’m confident that you’ll find something entertaining to pass the time. The WI-FI was not as glorious. The connection was intermittent and moderate strength. I was located at the far end of the hotel, so that may have contributed. You get what you pay for, and the WI-FI is free.

My room was just above the street corner. While I did hear passing cars and pedestrians during the day, all noise diminished by early evening. I did not wake up during the night. The hotel insulation is solid. When I opened the windows, it seemed like Pandora’s music box had been opened. Suffice to say, I left the windows closed. If you’re a light sleeper, I’d definitely recommend a room away from the street, particularly if you’d like to open the window. Finally, there’s an in-room safe which was easy to use.

I did not have a chance to sample the complimentary breakfast, since I left at 5:30am. Nor did I have a chance to visit the hotel gym or the hotel restaurant. You’re two blocks from the town square and a collection of restaurants. So hotel dining is not your only option.

Check-out was one area that was not simple. This is a more a function of the country than the hotel itself. There is more paperwork than if you’re buying a new car. The systems were not cooperating, and he was apologetic. The entire process was about 10 minutes which included trying to wrap up another guest’s folio. I would definitely allow a few minutes to complete the process.

In summary, the Hotel Don Rey Felipe met my needs. With a rate 50% below the top-tier hotels, and 20% below those in its tier, it fit the bill – literally. I would stop short of saying that it was an enchanting hotel experience. But I wouldn’t expect that in this category. If you’re in Punta Arenas for a quick overnight, this is a simple, economical option.

Pros:
• Décor matches rustic surroundings
• Free WI-FI
• Two blocks from town square
• Plethora of TV channels
• Favorable rate

Cons:
• Carpet not vacuumed in several stays
• No counter space in bathroom
• Intermittent WI-FI

Stayed here as the jumping off place for our Antarctic adventure and also upon our return. Very nice, clean and comfortable. Very attentive hotel staff. Restaurant in hotel needs a little improvement.

We booked a trip with the AntarcticaXXI company leaving out of Ushuaia on the ship Ocean Nova cruising down and through Antarctica & flying back to Punta Arenas. Two nights at the Hotel Rey Don Felipe was included in our trip. The hotel was in a good location with nice modern rooms, nice staff and breakfast. Thanks to AntarcticaXXI for a wonderful trip a great choice in hotels!

We stayed at the Rey Don Felipe for two nights in November. It is a nice hotel close to the city center, with everything within easy walking distance. It has a small car park, which is helpful, as the city center of Punta Arenas is metered parking only. We found the location excellent, although the hotel is not far away from what seems to be a red light district of some sorts.
Rooms were quite spacious, nice and clean and we found the beds to be very comfortable. Also the shower was good. Check in and check out were friendly and efficient.

The only weak point was breakfast, which was included in our rate. Breakfast buffet was varied, but not convincing at all. Especially the breads offered were terrible. The rolls were hard and very, very dry and the “toast” was sliced loaf bread that obviously has been frozen and not properly defrosted, as it was still ice cold in the center. Not good. Also, coffee was on the poor side.

Nevertheless, it was a nice stay and we liked the hotel for its location, the quality of the room and the beds and the friendly staff . We would choose it again, if in Punta Arenas , but probably without the breakfast part. The rate we paid was in line with the general high price level for comparable hotels in Patagonia, which means rather expensive for South America, or even Chile.
