“Good experience - be aware of the wind”
Reviewed 22 March 2014 via mobile

The experience is certainly nice and memorable. We bought our ticket in advance which prevented us from doing a 30-40 people line.

The tour operator we used was COMAPA which charges $28.000 per person. Another quote that we got was from SOLO Expediciones which charges $44.000 per person. Both prices seem high to me considering there is no audio guide tour or even an active tour guide.

Nevertheless, the experience is very nice and should be done without hesitation.

You can get really close to the penguins and see a bit of their social behavior. The island itself is pretty breathtaking. You get to feel like you are in a piece of land in the middle of nowhere.

“Wind hampered trip”
Reviewed 22 March 2014

It was very windy the day we went to Isla Magdalena. (50 knots, or about 57 mph or 90 kph) The wind kicked up the swells in the strait, so the boat rocked all over the place. There were people grabbing for the barf bags...

When we finally got to the island, they came on the loudspeaker and announced that it was too windy to approach, but they wanted to wait a little while to see if the wind would slow down enough to give them an opportunity. So we waited in the boat for about 30 minutes more as it rocked up and down and side to side. Finally they did manage to pull the boat up to the dock, and they said we can get off for 15 minutes.

Unfortunately, the wind made this pretty unpleasant because it felt like being sandblasted. It blew into your eyes, ears, nose, inside your jacket, etc. Most of the penguins were either in their nests or hunting (?) so there really wasn't much to see anyway.

Then we got back on the boat for another 2 hours of being tossed around on the waves.

If we ever get back to Punta Arenas, I would love to try this again on a calmer day. If it is a very windy day, you might think twice about this and perhaps go to Otway instead.

“Great visit at isla Magdalena”
Reviewed 15 March 2014

We made a trip to isla Magdalena to see penguins. It was very windy day but place was amzing. There were plenty of wonderful penguins. Island was very clean and there were only two buildings: old light house and one sort of container.

Would I go again? YES

“Thousands of Penguins”
Reviewed 11 March 2014

This was my favorite thing we did in Punta Arenas. The 2 hours trip is a little long but cruising the waters was fun. The island is amazing, there are penguins everywhere. While it is true you only get about an hour on the island. Our experience was an hour is plenty of time to enjoy the penguins. Plus, it was cold and windy the day we went. Thus, being off the boat for more than an hour would have been too much. Don’t miss this experience.

“Penguins, penguins, penguins”
Reviewed 7 March 2014

It's a great place to visit. You can actually walk with penguins around you. They are friendly, funny and curious. I spent about 2 hours there as part of a cruise, but I could have stayed all day. really fun!
