“Interesting but a Long Trip”
Reviewed 6 May 2014

After having seen penguins on The Falkland Islands we were probably over optimistic in our expectations. The trip on the ferry was long - 2 hours and the sea far from calm. The atmosphere in the passenger area was not comfortable. It was packed and a number were not that well. I spent the whole trip standing at the back of the ferry in the fresh air.
The Island was wind lashed and no vegetation existed. The penguins knew what to do - they dug burrows in the hills on the island. They were the smaller Magellanic Penguins and there were plenty of them. We spent about 2 hours on the Island and visited the lighthouse. We then spent a very rough trip back to Punta Arenas. Many were not well and it took a lot longer than two hours to get back. So overall an average experience.

“A unique nature experience (weather permitting)”
Reviewed 23 April 2014

Well organized ferry boats daily, weather permitting. We were fortunate to have a relatively calm day. By March many penguins including all the new hatchlings and the juveniles have left but there were lots (thousands) of birds left on the island. Really a fun day especially with kids along. Site is well controlled in that visitors are kept on a single path leading to the lighthouse. Best plan is to hoof it out in front of the crowd who will be held back oohing and ahing at the penguins. This gives you a quieter calmer chance to view the birds. No problem viewing them. Many are close enough to touch - but DON'T.

“Very good.....but”
Reviewed 17 April 2014

We went with Solo Expediciones. I had heard some negative things, but it wasn't that bad. I agree with previous reviews, go earlier in the season. Was there in early April, and I think they overestimate the number of penguins that are there. Regardless, it is worth the trip to even see a few. The boat was filled and not much space to move around. It is a long ride, but not as bad as I expected. We had calm seas, but would not have felt comfortable if the seas were rough. It is pretty close quarters.

“As close as you might ever get to penguins - amazing!”
Reviewed 17 April 2014

As Lorena wrote before me: it's great in the right season. So make sure you go latest in middle of March as after that the penguins leave to Brazil for food and warmer water.

We went mid of March an even though the main amount of penguins had already left, there were still a lot to see and watch. Both taking a swim, sitting in the sun or sleeping in the holes in the ground. Even if you stay on the path you might get as close as 30cm to them.

Bring warm clothes as it tends to be very windy/ stormy on the island. I also recommend bringing sea sickness pills if you know you might have a problem with that. The boat trip was quite bumpy.

“Plan for extra time”
Reviewed 6 April 2014

We went on the excursion to Isla Magdalena ans Isla Marta. Book ahead of time because they get full. Also plan for extra time; they weren't punctual (we left and returned half and hour later) and we almost lost our bus for Puerto Natales. Take this into considerstion if you are in a cruise and decide to take an independent excursion.
