Owner description: Hiking Wutong Mountain is one of Shenzhen citizens’ most popular activities (and offers trails for all experience levels). It’s a great way to get exercise and breathtaking vistas. On a clear day you can see Hong Kong.

This thing was a witch to climb- think I read a review on here that the last 25% is the most difficult and it's true. We got caught in a downpour about 200 m from the top and I thought I was gonna die. Seriously, I would write your will first.

Tired of the hustle and bustle of Shenzhen and the Guandong area? Tired of the factories, the people, the pollution? Need some excercise? This just what you need. I took a taxi from Futian in Shenzhen to Wutong Mountain - ~80 RMB. The driver didn't know where to go but asked a few people in the area and finally arrived at the trailhead (a big decorative gate over the road up the mountain). Yes there's a road, a paved road, so it's not exactly Yosemite, and it's full of young Chinese kids with jeans, high heels (!) and even a guy with leather pants (!!), many carrying mobile phones with a Chinese pop music soundtrack for your ascent, but even with all that, it's awesome. The road/trail is tremendously well-done. There are facilities to the very top, tea houses, concession stands, trash cans, etc... You can go 75% of the way with very little effort, simply walking up the road with a slow incline, about 4 km. The rest of the way is literally a stairway through the forest. Beautifully well-maintained stone stairs. That last 25% will get your heart pumping, finishing the hike off at 4.5km and 950m elevation gain. If you're a strong hiker and you run down, allow 3 hours. If you're in for a leisurely stroll, take lots of rests and want a meal on the mountain, budget 6 hours. Follow the signs for Da Wutong to go to the big peak.

We recently spent a lovely Saturday hiking big and little Wutong Mountain near Shenzhen China. It was fine weather day, although our views of Shenzhen were clouded by pollution haze, and there were many others climbing the mountain. The atmosphere on the climb is rather festive with lots of young enthusiastic Chinese, some in unusual hiking attire, scrambling up the mountain along side us. The frequently found food and drink vendors make it unnecessary to carry food and water. One of the preferred trail snacks is fresh cucumber costing 5 RMB and which the vendor will peel for you. One of our favorite stops was the teahouse just below the Shenzhen TV Tower. The 180 degree view of Shenzhen and the TV Tower was spectacular and we enjoyed a long break with the warm sun radiating through the glass. There is a minimun spending amount of 38 rmb per person which is easy to meet. The seat itself is worth that much. The start of the trail is 10 minute taxi ride from King Glory Shopping Mall at Guo Mao to Wutong Mountain Village where the trail starts. You can also take a bus. We took the Taishan Brook path up. This is a challenging up hill trail but we did see another route up which looked more difficult. We spent 7 hours hiking and resting in the tea shop but it could easily be done in 5 (or less if your finish time is the focus) I took a taxi from the finish to Luo Hu border crossing and it cost 25RMB. Wutong Mountain is a nice day trip from Hong Kong.

I climbed Wutong along the road rather than the hiking path. I think the hiking path would be the best way to do it but I only had a morning and the road is quicker. There are some OK views of Shenzhen, that is if you like looking at Shenzhen anyway. The bad thing about the road is it's very exposed and you rarely feel 'in nature' you also have to share it with obnoxious Chinese drivers that beep the horns at you. There is a little cafe along the way but it's filthy and badly run and maintained. If you take low expectations they will probably be slightly exceeded. It's a shame it could be a lot more pleasant. A trip over the border to the New Territories is a much better day out.

Fairly challenging at points, but a rewarding view at the top (depending on pollution levels downtown). A great way of keeping fit and making friends along the way!
