“No frills pure value for money”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 May 2011

Great location, near convention and exhibition centre. Close to supermarket and many restaurants. Small but functional rooms. Pure value for money paid. Easy to locate area with easy access to cabs, metro, bank, convinience stores. What else do you need on a business trip !!

Call me perverse, but I like this quirky old hotel in downtown Shenzhen.

Start with an older building in one of the older sections of Shenzhen; perhaps it built in the 1960s. At the time, it probably was a 5-star facility, but the years have not been kind to neither the plumbing nor the amenities. The neighborhood is prosperous and safe, but your search for fancy western wine bars and posh watering holes will be fruitless. The rooms are smallish, the air conditioning feeble, the television unwatchable. Why are you even here?

Because it’s going to make you smile at every turn.

Start with the jumbo-sized statue of Mozart hiding in a corner outside the main entrance. How did a gold Mozart get 9,000 km from Vienna?

The doormen (and doorwomen) wear elaborate, colorful uniforms straight from the “March of the Toy Soldiers.” To see a lovely and shy Chinese girl dressed as a Royal Fusilier of 200 years past is jarring to the senses.

The front desk staff is very cordial and eager to please, although their English is limited. They take most western credit cards.

Sure the rooms are small, but they consistently have been clean and tidy. The elevator service is reasonably fast. The towels are fluffy. There is the omni-present free bottled water, of course. It’s not bad at all.

As an example of older design of the rooms, in my most recent stay the shower was simply part of the bathroom. When bathing water natiurally splashed everywhere, which makes it hard to dry your toes and even harder to keep the bedroom dry. On the other hand, the shower room featured a painting of a nude Cleopatra caressing a giant stone sculpture. Nice touch. But, in the shower?

The breakfast buffet is large, tasty and reasonably priced. If you tire of hotel food, go out the front door, turn right and walk up the hill two traffic lights – reasonably-priced quality food abounds in an excellent variety.

The no-cost internet access is fast and trouble-free.

There is a wide array of shopping; even a Wal-mart is but three blocks away.

Access to the airport is by taxi, about 30 minutes if traffic is not too bad.

And the price is very reasonable.

So, unless you’re addicted to Marriott and Novotel, give the downtown Vienna a try. My bet is, you’ll leave puzzled but smiling.

This as a nightmare from the moment I tried to check in. It lasted almost 1hour. I made my reservation over Hostel bookers and receptionist ( 8 of them) couldn't manage with it properly. Finally, I got a room , small, smelly, with dirty carpet and with a view on some warehouse (luckily it was 14th floor so I didnt have to look down). All stuff , especially the one from reception desk, was very rude, with unpleasant attitude and all the time looked annoying and nervous. Breakfast was very dissapointing, bcs exept toast, salted butter and strowberry jam, all the rest of the food was chineese. If u want some fruit u have to ask for it, and maybe they will bring some(after 10 min). In a hotel description was an explanation tha Vienna Hotel Fuhua, Shenzen is 4* hotel. I dont think that deserve more than 2*.

My friend in Shenzhen booked a room for us through his company name and we got a Super Deluxe Room at RMB179 per night. It's a bargain.

The hotel bell boy & receptionist were very polite & helpful. But they speak very little English. So I spoke to them in Chinese.

There is a lot of shops for shopping, convenience store & food store beside and opposite the hotel. Hotel entrance also busy with taxis. So, no problem with transportation even to airport or to HK border.

The hotel lobby had a lot of bronze statues and had the Venice style. But there are too many tourists to check in. I think some local China tourist also checks in here. They smoke in the lobby and it's very noisy. Lifts are also packed with people as there are only 2 lifts to the hotel rooms.

There isn't any swimming pool or gym at this hotel. But the restaurant near the lobby was fantastic. Service was good, food tasty, huge food buffet varieties. The lunch buffet price was very cheap.

We also had our dinner at the Chinese Restaurant on the 2nd level of the hotel. The food was very good and service very good too. Prices are reasonable.

Our room & bathroom were very big & spacious. But the carpet near the bathroom entrance were soiled. Maybe from the leak flooring. When I complained, the housekeeping quickly replaced the toilet mat. And the bathroom's tiles were stained too. But surprisingly, the basin area and toilet bowl were new & clean. There is no bath tub in it.

Our rooms had 2 single beds. One of the bed is very hard. It's like sleeping on wood planks. I felt that the pillow was too soft for me but they provide a small square hug pillow (red color) on each bed. This made up for it.

Although it's winter time in Shenzhen (temperature about 19 degrees C), my husband and I still felt warm in the room, maybe because we're from Malaysia which is warm all the time. We called the maintenance and they told us that they off the main air condition system in the hotel because many guests were complaining of too cold. I told them that we can't sleep without air-con. About 10 minutes later, a housekeeping lady was very nice and brought us a portable cooler fan and opened the window for us. And it cool us right away.

Although we encountered some minor problems, but overall it's still OK & bearable considering the price that we pay per night.

  • Liked — Friendly & helpful staff, good food at cheap prices, good location
  • Disliked — hard bed, crowded with local tourists, slightly outdated room & bathroom

We had a comfortable overnight stay at the Vienna Hotel located opposite the Shenzhen Airport. The staff were nice (though had limited English) and the hotel has a handy airport shuttle. It's not a 5 star hotel but for 180 RMB per night it offered fantastic value especially compared to other hotels/hostels we have stayed at in China. Nice, clean room (though a tad dusty) and bathroom. Beds were quite hard but better than others we have experienced in Asia. The Vienna met our needs perfectly after arriving in Shenzhen on a late night flight. Would stay there again.
