the trip from guilin to yangshuo you will never forget. a quit, slow river cruise and all these fantastic
karst mountains with tropic vegetation.
a great attraction. do not forget your sunblocker and/or a hat.
for men only:
in the restaurant deck ask for the snakeliquor, a bottle with snakes inside. 1 glas is 30 yuan
and tastes good and your girlfriend/wife will enjoy your double power that night

One of the attractions that you should do. Basically 3 deck cruise boats go with flow of river from Guilin to Yangshuo taking about 3 hours. Depending upon the weather you will have great views of karst formations. Excellent for photography (depending on weather). Lunch served before you get to Yangshuo. Unfortunately if you want a choice of hot dishes you have to leave upper deck viewing to go below and miss photo opportunities. Alternately you can take your chances and delay going below in which case the food has cooled off and choices may be fewer from buffet.

You cannot go to China without getting out in the countryside to see the "real China". The Li river tour is basically a 4 hour race down the river by 20 boats all who leave at the same time from Guilin. Fortunately our Captain was not interested in racing and we had a nice leisurely cruise as boats passed us on the right and left. The topography is really with seeing and is as beautiful as the photos posted on this site. The Gumdrop Mountains are just so unique. Food on board is very average but it fills you up. Try the Snake Wine if you are adventurous (I took a pass). One piece of advice. Do not just take the cruise and bus back to Guilin in the same day. Stay in one of the hotels for a couple nights...we recommend "Secret Garden" (read those reviews).

I was a little hesitant about doing this river trip after reading reviews on Tripadvisor and other places. Unfortnately I dont know the name of the boat/cruise comapny as the hotel sorted that out and a guide took me up to the boat. It was a little larger than most boats and had 3 levels, the third being an open upper deck where I spent most of the 5 hour journey. This really is a must do for photographers. Others may find it boring after an hour or so but as a keen amateur photographer every encounter with another small craft (fragile bamboo rafts) selling fruit was another grat phopto opportunity. Every bend of the river featured anothe view. Water buffallo, fishermen etc. The food on the boat was good chinese food and the toilets were both western and chinese and were clean on my boat. Ask for a boat with 3 levels and you should get the same one. It was also a bit faster than the others and it was fun watching him try to overtake the other cruise boats sometimes with avoidence manouvers required in the tight channel!
If you are a bit jaded with over an hours worth of scenery and are a casual snapper take a book, but if you enjoy photography you will love this cruise.

The Li River is truly magnificent. It's a must-see for anyone in Guilin or Yanghsuo. Within either of these two cities, you can get some good views of the river and karst formations along the river. But, to see more amazing sites in a wilder setting, I would recommend the hike from Xingping to Yangdi.

Along the way, you will need to cross the river 3 times -- arrange this before you get there with a tour group or with your hotel. The boat men are very likely to overcharge you. You can take a bus from Yangdi back to Yangshuo or Guilin when you are done.

It seems that traveling from Xingping to Yangdi is cheaper than going the other direction.
[If you start at Yangdi Dock and go south, you could pay up to 500 yuan for a trip that shouldn't cost more than 100]

The hike is fantastic, quiet, and jaw-droppingly beautiful! Along the way, there are a few waterfalls to enjoy, dragonflies, butterflies, and other fauna and flora. And of course, the amazing karst peaks along the Li River. Hiking is really the best way to enjoy this scenery [the bamboo boats are noisy and the 'cruises' are big, ugly, and crowded]

Most of the path is stone or paved, but there are a few places that can be confusing. Just keep following the river and look for alternate routes -- you'll find your way. There was one portion of the path that was washed out during our hike, but most of the hike is easy and flat.

There are a few restaurants along the way, and locals may be selling tourist nick-nacks or bottles of water.
