“Nice but wont go back”
Reviewed 12 April 2010

Just came back today , we went for long weekend and stay at the family suite with our 3 boys (8 , 5 and 4 ) , first half day we spent at the hotel pool which very nice but compare to the other hotels just cross the street it a joke , we payed top dollars and only came to sleep at the hotel , NOTHING , NOTHING and NOTHING to do during the day with the kids !!! We spent most of the days at the Marriot , Ritz and Hillton , many of the guests I saw in the breakfast came to these hotels as well , these will be my selection to you .

My girlfriend and I recently stayed in the Thai Villa at the Pullman in Yalong Bay and were quite pleased with our Villa and the closeby beach. It is quite beautiful and peaceful. The food in the hotel restaurants is decent, not delicious but does the job for breakfast.

My biggest complaint is about the service here. Luckily, we both speak decent Chinese and could ask for things. We saw many other international guests, Russians and Americans to be precise who struggled to communicate with the concierge.

On our last night, we had the concierge make us a reservation at a local restaurant for 8 pm. When we arrived in the lobby to take a taxi, we asked if we could rent a DVD for after dinner when we got back home and if so, could they put it in our room or leave it at the Front Desk. This request really frazzled them and we were told it would be best if we were to go to the DVD renting room, wherever that might be, and choose it ourselves and pick it up. We politely said that we had to go to dinner and we didn't see how hard it would be for someone to bring the DVD to our room or at least the front desk for pickup later. In a compromise, the concierge agreed to call the DVD rental room staff and ask him to quickly come to the front desk right now.

We proceeded to wait 20 minutes for this DVD guy when finally we said, screw it, we'll ditch our dinner and a movie plans and just go get dinner. THis is when the fun (slash disasterous service started). The concierge staff had changed shifts and the guy currently working had no idea which restaurant his colleguage had reserved for us. And apparently there was no way of contacting him to find out. That took 10 minutes. We then asked them to recommend a different restaurant (all this is taking place in Chinese btw). This proved difficult but finally after asking around he recommend another hotel down the block but couldn't guarantee it was open (it was pushing 9pm). We asked him to call to find out. He couldn't find the number. This took another 10 minutes. We then said, we really want to eat, just get us to a restaurant, any restaurant outside of the hotel since we had already eaten at the hotel. THis proved difficult.

Royally pissed off and having waited an hour to go to the restaurant, I asked the front desk lady who wasn't doing anything what time the Western manager Peter Wise came on duty and if I might speak to him the next day. She was about to reply when another guest came and asked her a question and instead of answering me, she answered the other guest's query -- when I stomped away she shouted, 9 am, 9am.

We eventually got into a taxi and used him as our concierge. He took us to a local place and was of much better assistance than any of the hotel staff.

The next day I tried to meet with Peter Wise, the general manager but he was no where to be found. To be honest, I don't think Peter Wise exists. Either that or he doesn't like to respond to guests. Where are you Peter Wise, where are you? Everytime I would ask to speak to the foreign General Manager, I would have to retell the story to a low level front office manager who then said he'd ask Peter to call me. He never did and I stuck talking to low level front office manager who in broken English apologized and offered to give us a free ride to the airport. How generous of him.

The Pullman is a nice enough hotel, but compared to the Hilton clearly not in the same league. It is built in a semi South east Asia Style (like all the hotels there - I wonder why one cannot build something in Chinese traditional style, but that is an aside). The villas are large and roomy. The downsides are that the Pullman has no direct beach access, the choice of food is rather limited and repetitive. Every evening there is a themed buffet, but fundamentally the food is always the same with a few additions based on the theme. Better eat at the Hilton on the other side of the road where the food is slightly more expensive but definitely of better quality and with more variety. Make also sure that you are early at the buffet, because certain items will be finished rather fast. The breakfast buffet was ok but without any highlights - everyday the same.
The staff is friendly but untrained, which explains probably why so many non-Chinese satff were present. The villas can be reached on foot and with golf carts. Unfortunately the drivers of the carts see the walkways more as racing courses, making everything rather dangerous for small children. The gym is very poor and the way to the outdoor pools leads through the gym. It is rather annoying for anyone using the treadmills to have constant pedestrian traffic behind ones back. Also there is only one TV screen for the whole gym rather than one for each treadmill.
Landscaping around the pools is limited and seating is rather limited.
There seems to be a certain need to save cost, as many features like the outdoor lighting and water fountains at the entrance are being switched off rather early in the evening.
The saving grace are the nice villas with rather large pools.
Expensive internet connections, while in China I am more used to free internet.
The beach bar is rather limited and the waiters clearly have no experience in mixing cocktails - for even the most simple ones an instruction menue is being consulted and the cocktails come totally unadorned, not the kind of cocktails you expect in a beach setting.

We stayed at Deluxe Villa. It was way more spacious and gorgeous than we expected! And our expectations were high to begin with! The private pool was much bigger than we expected, too.
The best time we had there was having a room-service lunch at our pool side, or drinking wine and reading/relaxing under the gazebo... heaven!
The only set back is the restaurant choice isn't too great. They only have 3 restaurants to begin with, and food there are only mediocre.
Also, it is not facing the ocean, and you will have to take a buggy to the beach. But it will take only a couple of minutes so it didn't bother us too much.
I don't think regular rooms are too good, so make sure you stay at one of the villas. They are fabulous. We are definitely going back : )

We stayed at the Thai villa for three nights from March 29 to April 1; the pool villa is roomy yet romantic. The food at rive gouch restaurant is average, American Steak House is good. The resort is owned by Chinese Food Department, and managed by the French hotel chain. The establishment is designed to cater the booming new elite of Chinese middle class and travelers from aboard (Many Russians, Korean during our stay). The private beach which requires a short golf cart ride is nice and clean; unlike the public beach in Sanya which is generally crowded and polluted. The breakfast at the Rive Gouch is nice and you could feed the fish while enjoy the breakfast. We enjoy our Mojitos at the Sodabar; very nice decor and not expensive. We enjoyed our stay at the resort, the staff are courteous and try their best to accomandate your request. It is nice and romantic, however, it lacks the exotic atmospheres in places like Bali, Phuket or Hawaii.

A very good hotel overall. However, location is off the beach (unlike most others in Yalong Bay) and staff have big problems communicating in English. I never felt or witnessed any kind of presence of a GM or management team to oversee day to day runnings of this hotel. Room was good but it faced road and I disliked this. Would choose a villa next time. Restaurant average at best and not much attention from staff. Please note that the Indian restaurant is now closed and has been replaced by an extremely expensive steak restaurant! Also - please note that there is no pool bar either!!!!!! I was looking forward to pool side cocktails. We are actually checking out of this hotel and are going to a different one today! Will also review it! (the Cactus). If I came back to Yalong Bay, I would stay at The Ritz! It is amazing!!! We checked out all of the resorts and many are kitsch. The Ritz oozes pure style though. I must also say that The Pullman also has a very sophisticated feel, but the staff are despondant and you have to really push hard to get their attention!!

One of the most pleasurable hotels that I have ever stayed at. A private villa is the way to go.

Evening meals are very expensive, so I recommend going down the road to the Floret complex adjacent to the Crowne Plaza where there are plenty of good inexpensive restaurants to choose from.

Avoid being accosted by non chinese taxi drivers who approach you on the street. Also always request the taxi driver to turn on the meter. They are notorious here in Sanya for flat rate charging which is sometimes double the metered fare.
