This was a surprisingly good choice.
The hotel is actually not half bad at all. A few kinks and minuses here and there, but this is Sanya, not Singapore.
Not many English speaking staff - but they will try and find one for you. Reception is spacious and comfortable. Just about the only place that accepts credit cards. The room was better than expected for the rate we paid (390 Yuan per night including breakfast), though mostly taken up by the huge bathroom, and came with a balcony and recliner with a nice night view of the marina complex which lights up over the weekend. My partner was not well most of the time so it was a good place to just chill out.
Breakfast is OK , and the buffet dinner is worth the price, with free beers.
The hotel is well located in the city, with mini mart, banks ad international ATMs, and Chinese pharmacies all within walking distance, as well as some shopping precincts.
Service staff are responsive
If you fancy a day trip to Yalong bay, it's around 120 Yuan return. However, in late June the water is choppy and the currents strong, with jellyfish, so you mainly end up sunbathing. A good idea is to just ask the taxi to take you to one of the five star resorts, saunter in as if you're a guest and head to their private section of the beach. We chose the Marriott and had a free covered double recliner on the beach.
The minuses. Don't expect the "doorman" to take your bags anywhere except the lobby (and not all your bags) the rest is up to you. I think this is typical of China so wasn't entirely unexpected. The hotel corridor carpeting really needs replacing. We were not told of the free water and drinks in the minibar until we checked out. The WiFi is pretty dreadful and inconsistent (apparently a problem in all of Sanya). There is really no space in the room for working tech, or room service,
Other than that, we were pretty satisfied considering what we paid.
We travelled by bullet train from Haikou to Sanya. The connection is at the domestic terminal and easy to find . The ticket office does not accept credit cards nor do they speak English so do your research online for prices and timetable before you go. The train is very fast and comfortable. Taxis in Sanya need something in Chinese otherwise they won't know where you want to go.Go with some flexibility and pragmatism and it will all work out.
