“IMHO, one of the best hotels at Yalong Bay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 September 2013

I've stayed here twice - in January 2013 and December 2010.
I must say that it's a perfect hotel for families, as it is very quiet and comfy place to stay in.
We had an airport transfer and were met by a manager from Russia, who spoke perfect English. The staff was very friendly and welcomed us with coloured wooden necklaces with the name of the hotel on it. My wife liked them very much. It really felt like coming to Hawaii. The beach is very clean, the swimming pools are not too deep and perfect for children. The breakfast was top-class, but there was no buffet during the lunch and dinner, so we sometimes had it a la carte or went to the Pullman hotel across the road for the lunch or dinner buffets.
Rooms are large and clean. We had an ocean-view room once, and a garden-view room the second time.
There is also a great leisure entertainment building, where you can play board games, rent a bike, play videogames (ps3), watch some movies or cartoons, play ping-pong or snooker/pool.
Again the staff is very friendly.
Would definitely go there again.

I located the Marriott on Trip Advisor, it had good reviews so I thought the price seemed reasonable. The hotel staff was extremely friendly from the moment I got out of my taxi, through check it, laundry service etc. The breakfast must be included with every guests room as it is EXTREMELY busy at breakfast. My only complaint would be I truly believe there prices for there dinner buffet is way out of line. With 6 nights at the hotel only ate there once because the price was so far out of line. There is a good Chinese restaurant within 3 minutes walk at the end of the entrance to the Marriott that I visiting a few times as the prices where much more in line with reality. The swimming pools are great. Beach is very clean. The hotel is only a 20 minutes walk to a small shopping / dinner area including Pizza Hut & Star Bucks. I would recommend the stay.

Room Tip: I would go with the ocean view, but it was noisy a few nights with kids running around screaming, bu...

I've stayed at the Howard Johnson in Sanya, so I can compare: A top HOJO room (with Seaview, and breakfast) cost as much as the MJs regular "garden" room. HOJO had the exact same breakfast spread and more restaurants to choose from. The HOJO also had more convenient stores, restaurants, and other attractions around its hotel. Service was equal, except don't be an interracial couple at the Marriott, they'll check you every 15 minutes to see if your staying at their resort. Maybe security was tight, but jeeze dudes, we were the only Americans for miles! The only thing "better" that the Marriott had was the beach. It was more private, clean, and quiet. Otherwise it's WAY more expensive. Their Japanese Restaurant was great though! Really again, Howard Johnson is a better deal, if you don't mind being occasionally bothered on the beach by people selling you either coconuts or pearls.

Room Tip: Garden Room means a view of the parking lot and some grass. Suggest the other side.

Just over a week here and, on balance , a great stay. Perfect location for the beach and a great lagoon style pool (with enough space to swim. In fact, another 20 meter pool in the "kids" section allowed for proper swimming - a rare luxury in this land where most pools of any size are simply full).

The rooms were a little tired compared with newer hotels. The food was expensive, but a little supermarket on the same site saved the day and reasonable restaraunts within walking distance.

Service was mixed. Mostly ok, some staff a little disengaged, and some excellent (Lotus on reception and Viktor were gems, the former helping resolve one unfortunate incident). So a very ggood break and a happy family, but the competition is strong on this market.

July 27
When I stayed there, it was always rainy. I could go no place but within the hotel. But then I acknowledged that what is service and what is legend RC service. And when I upgraded to Club room, I realized that Club Lounge is also important in resort. I slouched in the sofa, enjoyed the afternoon tea and the sea view was quite different in rainy day. I had a wonderful chat whin the waitress there, and she recommend me to the free Yoga class in hotel, guided me to the GYM where a muscle coach taught me a lot on the daily exercise. I also had a great spa experience with authentic Tai massage. I found all the people there was so kind and professional. I will come here in the winter.

My Wife and I came here with 2 children (6 Months and 3 years) and had a very enjoyable stay. We stayed in a suite and really appreciated the space, the separate living room and bedroom means there can be some personal space.

Overall the resort was pretty good, but there were definite highs and lows, below I have tried to outline our key thoughts in no particular order:

Pools:
There is a great pool selection; There are 4 main pools (kids pool at the kids club, large lap pool (also at the kids club and very quiet) and two multi-function pools)
The two multi-function pools are very large and the main ones you see in the pictures, they are great to spend time in and around and you can explore for a fair time. There is a pool bar/restaurant around the pool and overall this is certainly the highlight of the hotel.

Beach:
There is a good size sandy beach which has a lifeguard and defined swimming area, there are lots of water sports and plenty of loungers etc. The waves were quite large when we were there and swimming with a little one was only attempted once in the week – not really a lot that the Hotel can do about that though!

Restaurants:
We were a bit mixed about the restaurants so I will try to explain why…
Breakfast was very hit and miss, not the food but the service. We came to the conclusion that they may have different service teams for the weekend who have different standards, but never before have I had to go to the staff counter and help myself to coffee, mugs, children’s cutlery etc. During the week there was no need, indeed by the end of the week the staff were great and knew what we wanted when we walked in, but to start with it was a real challenge.
In terms of the food – a good selection for breakfast, as you would expect from a major brand resort hotel, and the food was fresh. There is a large proportion of Chinese breakfast selection (which is not a surprise given the proportion of Chinese guests) but there is a good balance between East and West and plenty for all.

In terms of the other eating choices the general summary would be that the food is good but restaurant selection is too limited for a resort hotel.
If you plan to stay for a week then you would expect to eat 14 meals (lunch and dinner). Generally you don’t want two big meals a day, but there is very limited ‘light lunch’ style food. On top of that there are only three restaurants that we found which were open for lunch, so you end up looking at the same menus every meal time (the Japanese and beach restaurants are closed for lunch). This was very frustrating for us since we wanted a big family lunch and light evening meal, quite a challenge but achieved through sharing meals in the evening etc.

Check in / Check out:
I travel a lot for work and stay in too many hotels, I can’t stand the check in process in hotels, it is almost always a ridiculous palaver and amazingly often takes longer than checking in for an international flight, which I will never understand, well, this was different…
The combination of staying in a suite and organising an airport pickup lead to an amazing check in experience – we were met at both the airport and hotel and taken straight to our room which is a luxury we haven’t had before.

Checkout was also a breeze with no-one else at the desk it is always easier!

English:
The level of English is average at best, there is always someone who can speak well enough nearby so it’s not the end of the world, but it does require patience (and possibly experience to use more simplistic English), especially when ordering room service! We didn’t really have an issue as we are used to this living in Hong Kong, but some may find this frustrating.

Kids Club:
We were really disappointed with the Kids Club – our disappointment was based on our stay in the Westin in Phuket last year where the kids club was tiny but the staff there were amazing which made it a great experience – we figured with a big kids club it would be amazing.
The Marriott in Sanya has a large and well equipped kids club – one room for toys and colouring etc., one for TV and computer games (including PS3 and Wii), One room for table games (table tennis, air hockey, pool), a sand pit, climbing frame and shallow pool with long slide.

Where the disappointment came with the kids club was twofold:
1) The staff have almost no interest in the children, they seem to be solely focused on keeping things tidy (though think nothing of leaving their shoes blocking the door to rooms that children are running in and out of). There is no interaction from the staff, they speak almost no English (our daughter speaks Mandarin so no issue for us) and overall we were just surprised by the attitude given our experiences at the Westin.
2) Now there is nothing that the hotel can do about this, but the fact is that most of the clients of the hotel are from China. It seemed to us that when they come on holiday the whole family comes; Mum, Dad, at least one set of grandparents, aunts, uncles etc. – and usually only one child. This means that despite the number of children in the hotel at any one time the majority seem to be surrounded by 100’s of family members and are not playing together with other children or in the kids club. As I say, not one the hotel can really do anything about, how people want to holiday is up to them, but it was a shame for us as we were hoping our daughter would make some more Chinese friends have fun and at the same time as develop her language more – the fact is it was normally just us in the kids club playing with our daughter (which is good family time!).

Shop:
We were a bit disappointed with the shop, it had a good selection of swim things and things for the beech, but nothing much else, we have stayed in much smaller hotels which have made much more effort with their shop.

Summary:
Overall we have a nice stay, but felt it could have been quite a bit more. During the trip we went to have a look at the Sheraton and Hilton (either side of the Marriott) and will probably try staying at one of them if we go back to Sanya. It is not that we had a bad stay, but we paid a lot of money and felt that there is probably more value for the same money elsewhere – the real question is will we give up the reward points and stay somewhere else or stay with the one we know!

Excellent Resort for Family as they have plently of kids activities. Our room has the fantastic view facing toward ocean. Pool and private beach is well maintain. Since there were not much restaurants around, we usually order room service or dine in their outlet. Food is average with not much surprise. Only one point to comment is hard to get a taxi, have to ask concierge to assist.
