Nanshan Cultural Tourist Area
Ranked #2 of 17 Tours in Sanya
Attraction details

This supposedly a place of worship has been managed as a "theme park", if you insist of visiting, bring loads of cash as the entrance fee will cost you RMB150 during peak season. A visit inside the Goddess of Mercy statue will cost another RMB80! Other "carefully" planned activities throughout the park will cost money as well, so be careful.

There was a stall where you can buy fishes or turtles and release them to the sea, very noble but this will cost you few hundreds or RMB70K for the biggest turtle. I found this act is very disgusting!!

Anyway, seeing how this place is being operated, we left in a hurry and will not come back...

Nice place but build just as a tourist attraction so depends what you like and what you're looking for while traveling. We spent there some time but in overall weren't really impressed with the commercial site of it as spiritual aspect is hardly seen. It is all about making money.

It is like the Lourdes, Fatima, or any other so called religious (are they?) Destinations created for the sole reason of making good money from tourists offering nothing in return. The place lacks any cultural aspects of Buddhism apart some monks going around with the rosary and ripping off gullible tourists with special chants in exchange for good money. There is a big commercial area selling articles pretentiously religious when they are at unbelievable high prices. There are also two prices for everything from the entry tickets to the souvenirs. The highest for foreigners. Our tour guide was very annoyed that nobody of us bought anything at all given any souvenir on display could be bought in Santa at 80% less. There is no professional touring in any foreign language and no western toilets. The one available are very filthy. All drinks are sold 2-4 times higher than in the city. As experienced travellers we stuffed ourselves with drinks and snacks from the city. We rent a car through some friends to get there. Some taxi asked even 800 two ways and we were supposed to follow the taxi driver timetable. Luckily we had same Expat friend who allow us to rent his car so the tour guide we hired had to follow our schedule. Nothing to do in nanshan temple apart some photos under the big Buddha statue to show family and friends to have been there so to gain a lot of face. It is not enough to build an open space place a statue just to copy Rio de Janeiro and think to ha created a cool destination. Tourism management destination require a more broad minded and comprehensive understanding is the pretense is to claim sanya as international tourism place. There must be a more international approach and more professional tourist oriented management and customer service. I hope important improvement for the near future

Nanshan Cultural Tourist Area is more or less kind of a religious theme park. The focal point is the huge Kuan Im goddess monument on a small island linked via a bridge with the main area. Not a religious site as such, but this place was more of a commercial development with photo areas, restaurants, shops, etc. When I went on a Saturday, it was teeming with Chinese visitors.
Due to its large size, the park demanded plenty of walking and time to explore, which I did not have. Therefore, that is the reason for the average score here. I think there were many sights I missed so a more complete review is in store if a revisit happens. Overall, I liked the vibe of the place. It can be stunning on a sunny day, especially the goddess, which must be among the most beautiful of its type in China or anywhere else.

I don't like parks, but this place was good. The statue is very great. Remember that if you have no car you eed to leave this place about 16-30.
