This is actually a sprawling complex of a number of temples and associated buildings.

We spent close to an hour here walking around with our local guide who was able to point out the more important features.
Fortunately the day we were there it was neither crowded nor hot, because it would have been far less pleasant in those conditions because you need to walk in the open from one part to another.

I'm not about another post that referred to no photos; we only saw 1 temple inside which it said no photos. It might also help if you don't try to take photos with a flash that can be offensive inside a temple.

There are multiple temples in this complex. For a small fee you can ring the large bronze bell, and write on a prayer tablet to add to the large rack. After choosing the number of the Lohan which corresponds to your age, go around the corner to purchase a small metal souvenir which includes your fortune. The site's official gift shop offers excellent art objects, jewelry, and other items that make nice gifts.

I've visited quite a few temples in China and well once you have visited one you have an idea how the rest looks like and feels like... this is a nice and well maintained temple with all the statues and other Buddha related worshipping. Just like all other famous temples there is a sea of people and no photo taking inside.

If you´re visiting Wuhan this should be you´re priority visit. Highly worth visiting!

Gaiyuan Temple is huge, and there is much to see, so you should definitely spend some time here. Tickets are not expensive, but you´re not allowed to take pictures of the impressive Buddha statues inside the temples, but there is also much else to see. Everything is written in Chinese, except for the no camera signs, so not easy for foreigners to learn.

I visited during a kind of ceremony, and it was very exciting to witness the Chinese monks doing their ritual. There are several souvenir shops on your way, with a lot of interesting stuff to buy. When you finish the walk and go outside you´ll find the huge Buddha statue. The statue with the other temple in the background makes a very impressive scenery during sunset.

A must visit. Should be number one attraction in Wuhan.
