Novotel Wuhan Xinhua
Ranked #25 of 2,438 Hotels in Wuhan
Reviewed 27 March 2009

I stayed here for two weeks in January/February 2009 with my fiancée. I would personally rate this hotel a 4 star in most aspects, 3+ by European standards. The rooms are quite ok, we lived on the 9th floor which had non-smoking rooms. The bed was quite comfortable, not too hard and not too soft. And if you did not like the pillow you could ask for other kinds. From soft to hard, they had like 4-6 to choose from.

The bathroom was the only thing with the room that really needed a comment. The toilet in particular, as it had some problems with flushing. The janitorial services came day and night though, always smiling. He said this was a common issue with most rooms, so I guess they should consider changing the toilets. Every room seemed to have a bathtub which was very welcome. And, a nice thing was that the mirror in the bathroom had some kind of heating behind it so it never fogged down when you take a shower or bath.

TV had HBO, Nat. Geo., DIscovery, BBC World, CNN and such and an assortment of Chinese channels. Good reception.

The staff was above and beyond friendly, they really deserve praise. I had my birthday when I was there and the assistant manager and two other staff came to my room and gave me a birthday cake which was quite nice in gesture and taste. If I had any problem with something, they always did their best to help. And most of the staff, except the janitorial service and cleaners, had a good grasp of English. No problems understanding them, and they understood me. Quite refreshing.

There's an ATM in the lobby, which I felt was safe as I don't like to withdraw from my VISA on the street or even in bank. The ATM didn't give me a receipt, and when I told them they at once made some repair man come from the bank and by the end of the afternoon I had my receipt. Commendable service.

One thing though, room service and the food. If you order the hamburger, make sure you tell them how well you like it done. I thought I'd get a normal fried burger, but mine was rare and bloody to say the least. I took it up with them, and the apologized and returned my money.

There's a Mac just around the corner, if you suddenly feel you need some fast food and it's open 24 hours. There's also a nice western/asian restaurant on the way from the hotel to Mac which I can't remember the name of at the moment. Green-something. It was quite a nice place. There's many small nice restaurants around, especially if you turn right when going out the entrance and then right again at the first intersection.

The location was quite good. There's a park not far from there as well. And while you are in Wuhan, make sure you go to the Taoist temple restaurant. Vegetarian foods, but very special and excellent.

We ordered the room from a local agency, and paid 400 RMB a night. Which is expensive in China, but quite bearable really. And you get absolute safety, and the rooms are pretty soundproof so it is nice and quiet.

Will I want to stay here again? Certainly. And I would recommend it to anyone that doesn't think it is too expensive, and would like a safe nice place to stay.

It's a nice hotel with good location and starred service. I have enjoyed premier room and lounge with resonable price. The hotel staff are hospitality and professional.

It is worth upgrading to the premier rooms at the Novotel Wuhan. The price of these rooms is still under $100 and includes breakfast and drinks in the evening in the club lounge. The staff all provide 5 star service and their English skills are very good.

Downsides: The on-site dining facilities are very expensive compared to the local restaurants. The shopping complex located over the road is also at the very high end of prices in Wuhan.

If you looking for a comfortable stay, at an excellent price, in a central location, where staff will treat you very well ... I'd recommend this hotel.

The first thing to know is that this is not a European type Novotel, it is managed by Accor but it is not a motel/budget hotel, it is a starred hotel, with 5 stars, huge lobby, etc. It is a modern hotel, built 2003, rooms a little small and a few 'software' bugs with the people but the hardware basically OK (except the swimming pool, you have to walk through an off-duty massage parlour to get to it in the adjoining 'entertainment centre', with pink-lit corridors and all, I guess they accepted this to get the 5-star rating). The breakfast fine, good balance of non-Chinese with some Wuhan specialities like the Mianwo and the fried noodles. The first floor bistro is good with french menu, excellent wine selection (the Grace Vineyard Cab Sav is not available in most Shanghai hotels) and a pool table in the bar area, you don't see that often in China. Staff friendly and much better than Wuhan Shangri-La which I actually walked out of because they wanted to charge me for the extra bed in my room for the 5 year old (free at Novotel). Would recommend.

Nice clean rooms, bathroom needed more light. Basic TV stations. The breakfast is ok but nothing special. Not much in the area around the hotel to walk to. Staff is very helpful with excellent English skills. On site store is minimal. OK for a short stay.
