We took the yangtze cruise in china and and visited these three gorges dam. The escalators take take you up and these are huge gorges. Bigger than hoover dam. Three ships can pass at the same time and much faster.
Amazing views and worth spending time there

“Massive engineering Project.”
Reviewed 27 June 2014

What a feat of engineering the Dam is, and to be admired. It is well worth the visit and has some great photo oppertunities. The Dam project cost a lot of poorer Chinese people to loose their homes due to the flooding to form the Dam, This is an obvious down side to the project, but in the big picture some have to suffer for the bigger envirenmental gains to the masses of people that gain from this project !!!

“Amazing-An Engineering Marvel”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

The Three Gorges Dam Project is of epic proportions:

$30+ billion USD to construct, officially over 1.3 million people displaced (likely 10X that), Raised the Yangtze River over 100 meters (300+ feet), 5 major locks able to move 2 large ships in each direction at the same time, enough power generation for hundreds of thousands of homes, a ship elevator under construction that will lift or lower a large ship in under an hour, etc. etc. Remarkably the Chines government charges $0 since they view this as a strategic way to improve commerce from inland China (compare that with the Panama Canal which charges thousands upon thousands).

The best way to appreciate the scope of the project is in the visitors center where there is a large model of the entire project (see photos below). Upon leaving the visitors center there are 2 lengthy escalators that bring you to the vista that overlooks the project (see photos below) where one can get a good view of what's going on.

My sense is that people grasp the size of the projects, yet it would take an engineer's mind to truly appreciate what has been done as this is one of the great engineering wonders of the world.

Was it worthwhile-DEFINITELY!

“Engineering Feat but not overly memorable”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

Our boat went through the locks at night making it difficult to appreciate the total operation involved in the process. The next day we visited the Dam site. The dam itself is huge and impressive - the small scale model gave a very good idea of how the dam works. It would really interest someone into engineering.

“Difficult to guage the immensity of the project”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

We travelled upstream through the dam on our river cruise.
The boat moors downstream from the dam and you are transported by bus to the dam site, where you are met by a series of escalators to take you close to the top of the dam.

Our guide was most informative, explaining the important features, and allowing us sufficient time to simply wander around.

Photos do not really do justice to the project, or particularly the series of locks designed to raise and lower boats over 100m.
The locks were the most impressive part simply because you could actually see them functioning at close range.
