This is an amazing engineering project. The scale of the works is staggering. I was glad there were escalators up to the top ( I would not have fancied climbing so many steps!) Take a hat, wear lots of sunscreen, you are out in the sun a long time. Definitely a "big boy's trip"

Amazing feat of building and astounding amount of concrete used to build a structure to hold back the Yangtze!! Not a family outing, quite a bit of walking and the normal sellers of trinkets, but very worth a look if you are in the area.

Only recommended if you are taking Three gorges tour. Nothing exceptional and spectacular. The only plus point is a nice short Yangtze cruise from Yichang to the dam site.

We visited the Three Gorges Dam Project as an excursion while travelling on the Yangtze River Explorer.

We were first taken to a quiet park where we saw materials excavated during the construction process, as well as some enormous machinery. We were then bused to a visitors' centre, which was represented to be for dignitaries and special people like us only, but which I believe, based on the reviews, has been seen by many civilians. There one sees a model of the dam project as well as gifts from other countries to the Chinese.

Finally, we were taken to the dam itself. Although I understand the enormity of the project and its significance, I was underwhelmed. Having seen the Hoover Dam many years ago, which was a far more up close and personal experience, this experience paled.

We took a bus journey to the Dam during where we visited three different sightseeing spots. It's not as stunning as the Hoover Dam, I think it's better to take a cruise ship trip to "feel" the dimensions of the Dam.
