We had a great time staying at this hostel. It is a historic building and the room was very cozy and felt comfortable. The bed was nice and clean and we had our own bathroom. I enjoyed it so much staying in a historic building after all the new and modern in Shanghai. This was my first hostel stay after 10 years and I was very positively surprised. I can highly recommend this place and would go back there again..

If I were ever to go back to this hostel it would only be because the staff were friendly and is on the coolest street in Suzhou. The room, a second floor, stank of cigarette smoke and the bathroom drain. There were mosquitoes, but there was a electric bug repellant in the drawer. The bed was comfortable and so were the pillows, although the sheets and duvet cover were really thin. I will include a picture of the towel.
The cool picture you see on their site is the Mingtown restaurant two doors down, not the hostel itself. However, it is a really neat area to be in,and you don't have to leave the area to enjoy yourself. One is within walking distance from the Suzhou museum and the Humble Administrator's Garden, both of which are a must see.

Room Tip: Ask for second floor room, apparently bottom floor was worse.

Excellent. Excellent location. Excellent value. Very comfortable. Much more than I expected! Friendly and helpful staff. Gorgeous building. Would love to go back just to hang about for a few days. Good coffee just across the canal.

we extended one more night here in Suzhou, since we found it not just the private gardens are worth visiting in Suzhou, which is not a big city though, taking a stroll along side the river is highly recommended, also, there are several cafe and bars near the hostel, so it's good for a relaxing vacation in this city

After having stayed in several hostels for 7 weeks during our travel allover China, Mingtown Youth Hostel was a major disappointment and one of the very few hostels we would not really recommend.

Pro's and con's in short:

+ good location along the canal on Pinjiang Road
+ nice building, rooms with old wooden furniture showing some personality

- 145 Yuan for double room with shared bathroom rather on the expensive side, especially due to the fact that:
- common facilities (shower, toilet) dirty, were never cleaned during our stay
- no towels available, not even for rent
- only one small wahsbasin available for all guests using the shared bathroom, no plugs to use hairdryer
- no common room, you could sit only in the associated café in the next building, which is however rather like a restaurant with no atmosphere
- staff unfriendly, arrogant, not helpful at all - very unlike in other hostels. They did not know directions, not have any info about public transport, no help with tickets, restaurant recommendations or so, either no or wrong information combined with a dull, dismissive attitude

The hostel is perfectly located on a pedestrainised canalside with a w/e/night market in the historical district very popular with chinese tourists, lots of teashops and souvenir shops. It is very picturesque and a popular setting for wedding photos. It is within easy flat walking distance of the Suzhou Museum, Humble Administrator''s Garden, Master of the Nets Garden, Couple's Retreat Garden, The Garden of Harmony and Tingling Garden, the main pedestrianised modern shopping centre with international brand stores and a nationally renowned restaurant "alley". The hostel itself has no kitchen and no lounge area but owns aa teashop about 50m down the lane which is said to function as such. We had booked a double ensuite room several months before. They had no trace of the booking but we got a room. It was adequate and reasonably clean. There was a kettle but only one mug and glass. The fourposter bed was against the wall so you had to climb over each other to get to the loo. For one person it would be excellent, for two it was a little bit like staying in a small caravan ,only one person to move at a time. The former rubbish dump over the bridge, about 10m away had an excellent restaurant but there was no shortage of places tp eat. We were there in early April and it was cold but soon warmed up with the room heater (which was also a/c). There was a small book exchange in reception.
