The stay at this hotel was average.....for the money we spent, it should have delivered more. When we opened the door to our room, the first thing we noticed that the cleanliness was substandard, with the cutlery still dirty. Not a good start. We rang service and a lovely lady explained that the cleaning was contracted out.....so....and they moved us to another room which was cleaned. Service was very average but thats what you expect for a government owned hotel. Was a great location in the old town area, with plenty of places to visit.
Will be back to Suzhou to visit, but not at this hotel.....sorry

Although we stayed only a night, the whole setting was truly amazing.....we feel like we were in a typical chinese establishment with a truly modern touch. In short we were 'lost' in the past with a pleasant feel. The furnishing of the whole place including the rooms were something extraordinary and high standard. The service right from the check in to the check out is fast and efficient. Breakfast is extremely good with a wide variety to suit both the local and the western taste.

Room Tip: Use the executive rooms or the suites. The prices compare to the West/Europe is cheap as you can nev...

Great entrance, artistic ancient Chinese style lobby, nice garden, very friendly and very attentive and helpful staff. Very good location too, in walking distance to a nice canal and some parks/gardens.
But it didn't deliver the fancy boutique feeling you'd get when looking at their website. The rooms were clean and all, but it felt all a bit dark and damp, and a little bit run down.
Still, overall, quite ok, but not really fancy or that exciting.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights as it was rated 5 star. Our first impression of this hotel was that even though it was meant to be authentic it did look a bit run down. The breakfasts were adequate with more leaning towards Asian visitors but we could get reasonable food. The problems started when we realised that our iPod touch and camera were missing and we found that the window on our ground floor room could be climbed through with ease. After viewing videos we couldn't find anyone entering our room and believed the cleaning staff were honest. However it was seen that it was very easy to walk around cameras and get in and out without being seen. On discussing this problem with the manager he quickly suggested that it wasn't his problem. After much argument and effort on our part he agreed to refund firstly one day and then finally 2 days. He really did not want to do anything even though it was obvious to him and his staff it was a hotel shortcoming, he wanted us to walk away and take the loss. The police were informed but they did nothing. In summary this hotel shouldn't be rated as 5 star and should be seen as middle of the range 4 star only. The 5 stars hotels we have stayed at in other parts of China have been excellent and we would suggest you stay somewhere else in Suzhou if you can. Lastly after 13 days waiting the refund to our credit card has not come through even though we were given a receipt showing it had.

This hotel is situated about twenty yards from the the tourist are of the canals with lovely shops and bars to visit. You will walk past a shop where they are cooking in the street and a long queue of chinese people are always waiting for their food - so we had to see what the fuss was about - and they are worth the queue - spring onion pancakes baked in a tandor style oven - toasty hot, cheap and delicious. I was gutted that we didn't have time on our last day to go and buy a bag full!
The hotel itself is lovely, the doormen are particularly friendly and the gardens are pretty.
Great selection of both chinese and western food at breakfast.
Our room was huge and all dark wood - modern but with a very chinese feel to it. We were very impressed and would love to go again.
oh, one little negative - the pool was cold and when my partner went for a swim the spa receptionist sat and stared at him doing his laps which he found offputting.

This hotel has beautiful well equipped rooms but lacks the sophistication that one would expect to go with them! Our room had a coffee machine but no coffee or milk.
The book of Services lists a 'Celebrity Lounge with signature cocktails' but when we asked at reception we were directed to a small area by the breakfast cafe where we were greeted by a man who just giggled when we asked if they did cocktails. He certainly didn't know what we were asking for and said they had a beer. I asked again at reception but they said there was nowhere for cocktails.
The restaurant staff lacked professionalism , but tried hard and the food, when it came, was good.
I expect one could find a more professionally run establishment but to look at and in terms of the quality of our, albeit 'deluxe' room , it was hard to beat

We only spent one night at the Scholars and first impression was of a beautiful and elegant looking hotel. Good location and with great character. The room wasn't ready when we arrived so we had breakfast at their restaurant. There was confusion as to where breakfast was actually being served and after a few staff went backwards and forwards we managed to get to the right restaurant (there are only 2).

We ordered and one persons dish came first but the dim sum ordered didn't arrive. After my wife finished her noodles, and after asking the waitress who smiled and looked clueless, the dim sum arrived much later cold. We didn't eat it and refused to pay. Not a good start.

Friends of ours checked in and managed to get a room. When they got to the room, the door was wide open and there was plaster on the floor fallen from the ceiling. The reception were confused and seemed clueless about the repairs about to start.

When our room was ready we made our way there, and with a suitcase, baby stroller and baby in tow we were offered no assistance. The room was very nice and a baby cot was provided, but when we asked for two more bath towels as there was only one, the housekeeper gave us two small hand towels and didn't understand why that wasn't enough to bathe with. When pressed that we needed bath towels to take a shower they said they had no more. It was obviously wash day (so make sure you don't book this hotel on weekends as they run short of towels).

We also booked a car through the hotel to take us to certain locations we wanted to see. Travelling with an infant, this made it more convenient. We only wanted to visit certain places as we only had a day so told the driver where to go. After a few places he asked us if we wanted to go to a silk factory, but we weren't interested. He asked several times but we graciously declined saying we only had a limited time and wanted to see specific landmarks. But he still went on. My wife became quite annoyed. Then he pulled up at the silk factory after driving to it. We were furious, and he'd wasted time that was precious to us. We refused to go in, and then he went on about how he needed the commission. We told him to take us back to the hotel as we'd then run out of time and needed to put our daughter to bed.

We left the next morning and ordered a taxi to take us to the train station. The car arrived but refused to take us so we asked the hotel to get another one (again after much bafflement). There seemed to be lots of taxi's on the road but the hotel staff said they can't get them to come in, so we walked to the road to flag one down. A taxi came and we left.

The hotel is in a great location and is quite impressive. The rooms were nice but the service was severely lacking and the staff often clueless as if it was their first day at work. Cold food, ignorant drivers and overall poor service made what could have been an enjoyable stay unenjoyable. Towels anyone? We shall return to Suzhou, but not to Scholars.
