As European I cannot speak any Chinese. Fortunately the menu' was translated but there was no sign the food was going to be super cold almost frozen!!
Ordered some beef which came super cold, some mushroom and carrots stuff which was horribly cold and then the taste was bad. The prawn dish was basically prawn from the freezer with ice! i asked to have it hot and they say no we will not! Aaked twice with my iphone app translator! So they understood what I wanted. They kept laughing all night and taking the piss as we could not speak Chinese. Leak dumpling were way too full of garlic!! Spent over 225 yuan! The prawn dish: some prawn straight from the freezer cost 58 for about 50 grams of prawn!!!! Way to expensive! Really terrible experience!

In the main shopping area, there isn't much sign outside that this building contains a huge, ancient and excellent restaurant. You can't book, but we only waited about 10 minutes on a busy Sunday. No English is spoken but they have a good and extensive picture menu. Delicious pork with mushrooms, dumplings, lily bulbs, fish etc.

This 200 years old restaurant is conveniently located near Shantang street. We had the mandarin fish, stewed pork with soy sauce and soup. The food was really excellent. Don't leave suzhou without eating here

The most famous Chinese cuisine dish of Suzhou is the squirrel mandarin fish, and the place to have it is the Song He Lou restaurant. We booked a private room upstairs for lunch and we had a feast. Service was excellent as was the food. This is a truly Chinese restaurant so English is very limited, but thankfully, we went there with our guide. This is a historic restaurant dating back hundreds of years and in my view is a must when visiting Suzhou. In addition to the fish, we also had the no less famous Suzhou noodle soup, another Chinese cuisine delicacy of the area.
