Reviewed 30 October 2010

Friendly helpful staff, their English wasn't too good but they had the imagination to cope with my sign language. Very comfortable bed.
Had problems with a perfectly valid card for deposit.
Weak point was the restaurant neither authentic Chinese or Western.

We stayed at this hotel for a week whilst adopting our little son.

Our room was on the 11th floor which seems to be the floor devoted to adopting families.

It was a standard room which was way too small for two adults and two young children. Plus there was no bath tub which was really annoying.

Also, the room was too hot and it was very noisy outside.

But the beds were really confortable and there was a tab with drinking water which is not always the case in China.

On the plus side, this hotel has a play room on the eleventh floor which was a life safer for our little family. It is a large space with toys and a CD player. We spent lots of time there also mingling with other families.

It is nicely located not far from the river where you can go for nice walks along the river bank.

Finally, I had a wonderful full body massage in the health center. To be recommended.

If you are travelling with children I defintely recommend that you ask for a Junior Suite on the eleventh floor. It is a bit more exepnsive but definitely worth it as you will have a much larger room amlost immediately oppositie the play area.

No working area in the room. Filthy carpet and the bathroom shower curtain has mold all over it. Avoid if you can.

Stayed 6 days for adoption 10/09. Nanchang has an air pollution problem and inside a lot of people smoke, so clean air is the hardest thing to find. The hotel staff are nice and they have a nice buffet in the morning, including a chef who does eggs and omelets any way. It is a very interesting local area to see real Chinese city living. The little store around the corner in the courtyard is fun, and we enjoyed local bakeries across the street - very inexpensive but exquisite little cakes. Nice place to eat in the building next door. Hotel rooms nice if smallish. Pool way too cold to use, disappointing kids. Breakfast buffet was outstanding but numerous businessmen were puffing away filling the whole area with choking smoke. We learned their schedule to avoid them when possible. We were there during a business fair so there was an unusually large number of these powerful but nicotine-addicted gentlemen there.

Stayed at the Jen Feng for 8 nights while adopting our daughter.
* Staff is very friendly and helpful. Limited English with some staff members, but it doesn't take long to find an english speaker.
* 25+ story modern Hotel was in the city, but not near any major shopping areas
* 10 minute cab ride to a nice multi-city block pedestrian area with McDonalds, KFC, and other nice, modern stores
* 15 minute cab ride to Wal-Mart and large shopping area around it.
* Hotel was nicely appointed - Marriott quality fixtures and trim.
* Major renovation underway to be completed in early 2007 - pool, lobby, and most dining rooms were all out of service. Hotel was using one makeshift dining area for breakfast/lunch/dinner buffet.
* Breakfast buffet was average quality. Never ate lunch or dinner in hotel.
*Room service was average, but very cheap.
*Mini-bar is also very cheap, but there is a small grocery store just outside the hotel (across a small courtyard next to the restaurant described below - pop, candy, etc. is about 50% of mini-bar price)
* Rooms are typical Chinese business class hotel - somewhat small, nicely appointed, nice linens, smallish VERY firm beds, TV (HBO is only english channel), wired high speed internet, safe.
* Bathroom was also tight but good quality fixtures and included toothbrush, tooth paste, comb, razor, shaving cream, and two small complimentary bottles of water.
* Excellent local restaurant in base of tall building just across a courtyard from the hotel - they have an English menu, but staff speaks very little English. Ask your translator/guide/hotel staff member to help you order. Ate there four times - very consistent and cheap - 5 adults, two babies, 10 bottled waters, 5 entrees cost about $18 U.S. or 140 Yuan-Renminbi
* Advice: Walk back through the courtyard between the hotel and the restaurant and it opens into a quaint tree-lined street with local shops and residents going about everyday life. This is 'real' urban China - few tourists other than adoptive families. If you like to observe other cultures, the Jen Feng is a great place to stay. Wake up early to watch the area come to life - Tai Chi, badminton, etc.

All in all, a good place to stay albeit a bit off the beaten path...

  • Liked — Nicely appointed, clean, great restaurant next door, short cab ride to shopping areas
  • Disliked — Had to take a cab to shop, etc. Renovation had pool out of service until early 2007
