This square is very beautiful. It was far from the hotel I was (Hilton), but the visit was worth it. Is has a fountain in it and also a monument that shows the 1000 footprints from the immigrants that built Dalian. There was an amusement park as well, with lots of attractions.
It's worth it the visit if you have time.
Xinghai Square itself is interesting to see. The modern communist style but modernly done art surrounding this square. Also, the square is open to the sea ( Heishi Reef Bay) and leads to Bainian Memorial Chengdiao, which i particularly liked. I liked the thousand steps installation that lead to the two kids and the huge "open book" structure. It was a very stimulating park (see my pictures).
As everywhere in Dalian (and most of China), watch for the inconsiderate drivers when walking from the square to Bay. There are a 3 -4 very busy roads and if one is too immersed in the beauty they could be easily run over.

Xinghai Square is the largest square in Asia.
I was surprised the area of this square.
Of course, it is larger than Tiananmen Square.
Because it is near by the sea, the climate is very good the season.
But the square is just "square".
I didn't feel any other things.
I thinks that the mansions and hotels of around this square is also very good for sightseeing...very gorgeous.
Beware of the Traffic, they give no space for pedestrian. Like Dalian in general, Side Walks are disappearing, as they are now the "Car Parks". Take great care when you step off to get past the parked cars. Bus mirrors and heads are not compatible !
