This hotel was really nice, rooms were very good and the staff excellent nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was also good with cooked choices available on order. It is within walking distance to the beach area, naval museum , and underwater world, if you don't mind walking and there are many beautiful buildings of german architecture on the way.

Slightly quirky but also fairly luxurious hotel set in gardens next to the German Governor's Mansion. It's an interesting part of Qingdao but maybe 15 minutes walk from the seafront. Taxi's are only 9RMB if you don't fancy walking. All the rooms seem to have two single beds which are pushed together if you ask for a double. Although we booked a garden view superior room, on arrival they showed us to a deluxe room at car park level. We complained and were then shown a couple of garden view rooms which weren't quite ready but we selected one of those. Having said that, we had arrived before check-in time, but there was another couple who were complaining that their room only had window in the ceiling, so I think that room specification and allocation isn't all it should be. The beds were hard (normal for China) but comfortable. There was a good selection for breakfast, mainly Chinese food, but there were cereals and omelettes as well as some pastries for westerners.

Room Tip: Worth the extra for a garden view room.

Traveled to Qingdao for the first time Sep 2013 and stayed in this boutique hotel for 3 nights. It's located at the ''old" city area of Qingdao, within walking distance (10 minutes) to 3 tourist spots i.e. German Governor's Residence, Signal Hill Park and Protestant Church.

You can call for a cab to other tourist spots further away and normally cost less than RMB20. You can also book a one-day Mount Lao for RMB175 at the front desk counter. The tour will take you to the Qingdao TV Tower. Lunch, entrance fee to the TV Tower, boat ride and cable car ride are not included in the travel package.

The Chinese Restaurant serves delicious dinner. We ordered plain toufu and fried prawns to go with TsingDao Beer. Breakfast is also served at this Chinese Restaurant.

Although it get's quiet to walk the streets near the hill where this hotel is located, it's safe. The hotel staffs are generally very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: It's quiet even if the rooms are located at the ground floor (adjacent to the front desk) next t...

I’m writing this review, having just returned from a lovely 4 day stay in Qingdao at The Castle Hotel with my husband for his Birthday.

It’s is a very nice boutique hotel in the old town, set on a hill in pretty gardens. The staff at the reception desk on our arrival were friendly and polite, and both spoke English. Our bag was carried to our room, and we were very pleased with our garden view suite, which was beautifully decorated and furnished.

The hotel is in a good location, in quiet grounds and gardens, however it is easy to get around from there, a 10 minute walk got us down to the seafront, and a pleasant walk through the interesting streets and buildings of the old town. We love walking, and walk everywhere so didn’t find it out of the way as some reviews suggest. We even walked to the Olympic sailing centre one day along the waterfront boardwalk which runs along all the beaches and bays (although that took us around 2 hrs!). There is a bus stop at the bottom of the drive, and for 1 RMB (around 10p) we got the bus to the Tsingtao Brewery, the same bus also goes to the Pier at the waterfront. There is a lovely café set in a pretty garden in the grounds of the Youth Hostel at the bottom of the driveway of the hotel, and further down the hill on the right a quirky bar / café as well. There are plenty of local restaurants within a 5-10 minute walk, although for western style restaurants you have to travel a bit further. The only time we got a taxi from the hotel was when we left for the railway station, staff arranged for a taxi for us which arrived in around 5 minutes. We had the address written down in Chinese for when we arrived, which we’d recommend doing.

There are some leaflets in the hotel reception about the bus routes and various other things, partly in English, copies of Redstar magazine – an ex-pat magazine with reviews, listings, map etc. which was useful. The hotel provided us with a photocopied map of the old town and where key buildings were, but as we’ve often found in Chinese hotels, a lack of a bigger detailed map on the area.

Breakfast has been mentioned in the other reviews, there is a large choice, majority Chinese (after all, it is in China!!), however there is an a la carte menu which you can choose from, where they will make scrambled eggs, fried eggs, omelette, bacon, sausage etc to order. As well as hot Chinese dishes, there was also bread & a toaster, yogurt, fruit, fresh juice and some cereals. Our only comment on the breakfast is that some days we didn’t get all we ordered, and it didn’t come together (dishes arrived separately, Chinese style!), and on the last day, the sausage was cold and barely cooked.

The staff were always friendly, reception made a call for us once to see if a restaurant was open. Our Ayi noticed that we had the A/C on quite cool, and changed our duvet for a lighter one and left us a note in English explaining this. People have commented on the hard bed, yes it was but it was still comfortable, and common in China. The bedding was really comfortable.

We are from the UK, but live in Beijing, and chose Qingdao for a holiday for my husband’s birthday. We got talking to the owner of the hotel at breakfast, and explained that it was his birthday that day. Later when we got back to the room, we arrived to a lovely birthday cake, and a message wishing him a happy birthday, what a lovely surprise! Such a kind and thoughtful thing to do, thank you very much! This made the service very personal.

We ate one evening at the Rats Keller restaurant in the hotel grounds, enjoying soup, and a chicken & beef curry, both very nice and reasonably priced (compared to Beijing).

A great few days, and we’d definitely go back one day, as well as recommend the hotel to friends.

Room Tip: We had a garden room, city views are just of other buildings around, rather than a view over the cit...

This boutique hotel makes a great change from the usual large major-chain hotels - surrounded by trees and a great view from the top of the old part of Qingdao. Spacious and modern rooms, quirky artwork and a broad selection of Asian and Western food for breakfast add to this, although our garden view room had more of a car park view than garden view.

Qingdao was our last stop in China and we wanted a bit of a splurge but in fact the prices here are very reasonable for what you get. The hotel is in the grounds of what was the residence of the governor when Qingdao was a Gereman concession. You may know the name as Tsingtao which has been preserved for the excellent beer.
Rooms are very comfortable, staff helpful and know the town, service excellent and the wifi works fine but only in the lobby. You may find that the Cantonese restaurant inside the building has been booked for a party as it is a popular venue but it is only a hundred metres walk through the park to the German style "Ratskeller" which is good value
Do not miss the tour round the house - Mao and Chiang both stayed here, there is a good history of the place and the shop has the badges of every English Premier League club on salle in case you gave yours away!

Room Tip: We were in a rom that is down the stairs from the lobby (but ground level at the back) which was wel...

We picked this hotel looking for something different to the usual China 4/5 star, and were not disappointed.
It is in a quiet location, surrounded by parkland. Although we were there in winter, I am sure it would be much better in full bloom. The outdoor areas were closed, of course, but the balcony areas overlooking the park would be a bonus in the warmer months
The room had all facilities, and the staff were friendly and helpful in all ways. We couldn't fault our visit.
The breakfast and Chinese dinner were excellent.
A word regarding travel from the airport. Although we had the hotel name and address in Chinese, the taxi driver was not familiar with the hotel, requiring a phone call to the desk to give him directions. Perhaps this was a one-off, but be prepared.
