Holiday Inn Datong City Centre
Ranked #16 of 171 Hotels in Datong
Reviewed 5 September 2013

The official website shows a price when you are booking, but later at the hotel when you are going to pay the price change.
They inform in the website that a 10% and 5% will be charged, but even with these amounts the final price change when paying at the hotel.
When booking you receive a notification but no price shown.
When logging in the website the price is quite confusing because they split it up in different terms.
We made a complaint but they redirection you to the hotel in question and nothing is solved.
We traveled to another city of China and didn’t book again due to this problem in Dation, so Holiday Inn lost us as customers.
The staff in reception is inefficient and with poor English, just the managers on duty in the morning and in the evening were quite professionals.

Datong is not Beijing or Shanghai, so travelling to the city I was a bit worried about this hotel. It was listed as a 3 star, though I have found that sometimes means different things in different cities.
In this case, I was very pleasantly surprised. The lobby and general public area was clean and well designed. The staff was helpful, though the wasn't a extensive knowledge of English as in the bigger cities, but that is to be expected.
The rooms, well they were above and beyond. I have stayed in a few Holiday Inns over the years, and this was one of the best rooms ever for this chain. A larger than expected room, it was very clean and the amenities were top notch. The bed was big and comfortable, and after being on the road all day this was huge for us. Loved the room
Now there were some things that we didn't like. No internet/business center was a bit disappointing. And the restaurant...ugh. We usually try to get out of the hotel for food, but in this instance we were tired and didn't really have the energy to explore. The restaurant was a disaster. While it was clean (I put alot of emphasis on that in my reviews), the service was terrible and the food was even worse. I would not recommend eating there, and my rating would probably be closer to 4 stars than 3 except for this.
Overall, a very good hotel with a bad restaurant. I would definitely recommend people staying there, with that one caveat. And if you are in Datong, the Hanging Monastery is impressive.

I have been in Datong since June 2013 as part of a competition. Now that the competition is over, my friends and I have chosen to stay at Holiday Inn while we prepare for the journey home.

The rooms are well-appointed, and is in-line with our expectations of an international brand hotel chain. The previous hotel that we stayed at was a business hotel, and while that was half the price of what we paid here, it was not someplace you would want to put up for too long. Here at Holiday Inn, the beds are much more comfortable, the room feels much more spacious, and the provision of a desk for you to work when you need to do work. TV channels on the sizeable LCD TV (with PC connectivity as well) is fantastic, ranging from local Chinese channels to CNN, Discovery, and HBO. Overall, the quality of the rooms are good (although I'm not a big fan of the big glass window that frames the entire bathroom), and it has a premium hotel feel.

However, there are a few things to nitpick at. Room lighting (apart from individual reading lights and the standing lamp) is either all on, or all off. The room that we were issued (Room 508) had at least two non-functional wall plugs. While there is free WiFi for guests, the quality of wireless reception may vary from where you are in the room. The Ethernet connection in the room is chargeable, so you can leave your portable travel router at home if you are staying here.

Service quality is good, but there are inconsistencies. The first morning I had breakfast at the restaurant downstairs, we had to collect our scrambled eggs/omelettes from the chef (it is made-to-order). However, the second morning we had breakfast, the service staff sent it to our tables. Also, there were a number of occasions where we had to get our keycards reactivated by the front desk. The first time we did it, the staff at the front desk said it may have been accidentally demagnetised. However, the second time we did it, the staff had to verify our checkout dates with us as it did not tally with their computer system. They were polite, but they are gaps that can be filled.

All-in-all, if you want the benefits of what a hotel chain can offer, then Holiday Inn Datong City Centre is what you'll want when you are in town.

Room Tip: If you're not so comfortable about the big bathroom window in the room, lower the blinds and uti...

I have bee travelling extensively for three weeks in China and this was the worst hotel I came across.
The rooms are new and well appointed but for the rest the hotel is very badly managed and dirty.
The swimming pool and changing rooms in particular are literally disgusting: it is a new hotel and yet paperwall is rolling up the walls because of humidity and extensive mould. The restaurant is not much better: dirty glasses, plates and cutlery; low quality food reheated numerous times. In reception service in non existent, totally incompetent. Avoid it if you can!

We have just spent 2 nights in this hotel and we were very disappointed:
the non-smoking room was smelling terrible, the carpet of our room has not been vacuumed for days (as well as in the corridor), the restaurant was not willing to serve us as it was half an hour before closing time, at breakfast the table were not taken care of, each time we had to ask for a clean table, ask for paper napkins etc..and more unbelievable, at the time of leaving the elevator lights were giving the wrong information(when the door opened we were supposed to go up but in fact it was going down)
The swimming-pool was under maintenance and not open.
I would nor recommend this hotel

We stayed here just one night as part of our trip to the holy caves as well as the hunging monastery and the wooden pagoda. The hotel is new and modern, our room was big with a spacious bathroom (with both shower and bathtubs). Free wife is also available (even if it didn't work very well in the room but it was ok in the lobby). The service is correct for "chinese standards" (different of cours from western ones.....).

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of our trip to visit the grottos and the hanging monastery. The room is clean, spacious and comfortable with free internet access. For location wise, as the hotel is relatively new, the taxi drivers do not really know where is it located as the hotel is not facing the main road. It can get rather frustrating especially after a 4 hour train ride from Hohhot and turning rounds and rounds before finding the hotel. It is best to obtain the mandarin translation of the address prior to your trip. A tip: Do remember to bring out the hotel address card before heading out to the streets.
