“A Very Pleasant Surprise”

Huayan Temple of Datong
Reviewed 2 July 2013

Perhaps shouldn't have been surprised, but thought the works here were outstanding, interesting and beautiful. Overwhelming wood sculpture, murals and, of course, Buddhas

This temple is exceptionally good. It is huge and has been well-restored with spectacular artwork and statues. The buildings look almost Japanese in style, rather than Chinese and the whole complex is a marvel. The view from the pagoda is great and the best part is main hall with its ancient relics. The most amazing thing is that due to the high price (80 RMB, discounted to 60 for some reason), it is effectively empty. You will feel alone and able to intimately explore this wonderful set of buildings - a very rare commodity in China.

Absolutely worth the entry, best temple in Datong.

This is a pretty standard temple complex, with statues and many buildings. What pushed this above average for me was the underground copper or brass room under one of the pagodas. Visited in December when it was -10 and we were the only tourists in the entire complex. Very beautiful and large. We took many tourist free pics which is always a challenge.

It was a pleasant surprise. The complex was huge and well maintained. We had visited it in Nov so the place was not bustling with people. If you are a true believer, the statues inside were all magnificently preserved by the high almighty. Worth visiting.

It was middle of winter and below zero - so kinda ideal to rug up in my best alpine ski jacket and meander around this temple which is quite large in area. Temples should never be rushed. There's many others of the type in China, so if short of time, skip it.
