“A unique must stay when in Chengdu”
Reviewed 18 May 2010

Booked a suite due to demand limitations and wasnt disappointed! Charming boutique hotel (joint top over our 3 week trip of China). Decided to stay an extra night within 5 min of arriving!

Pros - Impressive attention to detail in this 'traditional' chinese hotel, tranquil courtyard. Wonderful & helpful staff (number 1 & 11 on front desk - they arranged flights, next hotel, opera tickets and taxis for us while there as well as trip to the Pandas of course). Breakfast was included, but only average. Nice location in 'tradtional' style shopping area.

Cons - Give their spa a miss if you want a quiet relaxing experience (TV's on while being massaged / no spa staff uniforms / staff even answering their mobile phone mid massage!) - Shame they havent quite got the Spa right as it has potential to be fab. Limited late night eating options close by.

The hotel staffs are best in class and I have stayed in places like the St. Regis in NYC. They really go out of their way to help you, including walking you to find things around the neighborhood. The only issue we had was a much less friendly staff at breakfast. In addition, the hotel is located in the middle one of Chengdu's recreational zones, which means they have made an effort to make it the architectures traditional, and it's only half a block away from the Wenshu Temple. The downside of the location is no cars or taxis can drive up to the hotel and it's about a block walk to the main road where you can get a taxi....taxi is hard to come by in Chengdu especially during busy time. The breakfast that's included in the package is a bit lacking, very small selection, although you can get eggs and noodles prepared. The rooms are decorated with traditional Chinese furnishings but beware that they do serve quite a few Chinese guests so smoking in the rooms are fairly standard, so if you don't like smoke...make sure they give you get a smoke-free room. Plus the noise from the shops opening up around the hotel in the morning can be a bit noisy.

Situated in a old style new village, within the heart of Chengdu and surrounded by lovely shops, tea houses and great restaurants.

Staff were friendly.

There were clumps of dust under chairs which obviously hadn't been cleaned in a while and I even found a finger nail on the bedroom floor!!

Outstanding hotel.

1. Location
The hotel is in a great place. The surrounding neighborhood is some touristy faux-old Chinese town, but it's fun to walk around a bit and get some street vendor food. We ate at a few restaurants around the block and they were very good. There's also a Buddhist temple but we didn't visit it. (it was 5rmb).

All cabbies know the area although not many knew the exact hotel. We printed out the address and a map to show the drivers. Do know that the hotel is about 100 meters from the street and you will have to walk in a bit. However the signage makes things very clear. The hotel name is fairly easy to recognize even if you don't know Chinese -- it's 2 circles with a word in between. I got in at 11pm and didn't have too much trouble finding the place.

2. Staff
The staff was great -- very helpful. They are much friendlier than the average citizen on the street (and I'm Chinese) so it's a welcome surprise. Everybody at the front desk greeted us on the way in and the way out every day. They eagerly carried my bags to our room, which was great since there is no elevator. I believe they know a bit of English (one waitress knew a useful amount) but we communicated with them in Chinese.

On your check out day, please be sure to tell the staff and they will gladly hail a cab for you. We had a cab waiting for us in the underground parking lot with our bags already inside. Actually the staff will gladly hail a cab for you any time. They even walked out into the area to point out good restaurants for us.

3. Amenities
The bathroom was well stocked, with razor, soaps, toothbrushes, etc. We had trouble locating the hairdryer, but a quick call to the front desk informed us that it was in a drawer by the television. Speaking of tv, it had HBO which was a pleasant surprise.

My wife and I loved the breakfast. We had it 5 mornings in a row and we were not bored with it. However there is some meat in case you were expecting an all vegetarian fare. There was some noodles, sausage, fried rice, toast, etc. A waitress comes around and asks if you want hot wontons and/or sesame mochi in soup.

As mentioned before, the food within walking distance was very good. We had some street vendor noodles that was great and had three restaurants in the vicinity. All were good and most had picture menus.

Back to the hotel, we enjoyed a few foot massages at the spa. There were around $20 USD for 45 minutes or so.

Summary:

All in all a great experience which was fun and above all very relaxing. I think their whole goal is to provide a relaxing environment. Have fun lounging around and enjoying tea or a massage.

btw: I didn't put full marks for Cleanliness because the carpet wasn't spotless. However it didn't bother me at all.

We stayed at this hotel for one night. The architecture and charm of the hotel was perfect. The hotel surrounds an open air courtyard with a Buddha and a zen rock/sand garden. Really charming and unexpected! There were no elevators (something to be aware of with heavy luggage). We were on the second floor. Our room was quiet and simple. It was pretty clean if you didn't really examine things closely--better than a Holiday Inn, which is what I use as a standard for "basic" hotel rooms. The bathroom was a bit dated which made it feel dirty, though it really wasn't. They also gave us a free fruit basket which was delicious. We arrived late and nothing was open around the hotel, so we ate the fruit and figured that was enough for dinner anyway. They had some overpriced instant noodles available in the mini bar, but only one, so if you know you're going to be arriving late, then it's good to bring some food along. Really, though, it was a comfortable experience. Without spending a ton of money on a hotel, it was great value and great for what it was--a clean hotel in a good area. The breakfast was cozy. Not a ton of variety, so if you love those huge western buffet breakfasts, this isn't for you. We liked it, though.

The Buddha Zen Hotel was without any doubt the best hotel that we stayed at on our trip around China (visiting Shanghai, Chengdu and Beijing), and indeed one of the best and most unique hotels I have ever stayed in anywhere in the World. Everything about the hotel is exquisite, from the outside, reception and courtyard area to the rooms and spa (open until 1am). Everything has a very traditional yet high quality and spotlessly clean feel to it, and the attention to small detail is what really sets this hotel apart from the rest. Upon arrival, we were taken to our room and given fresh fruit, a relaxation CD and a 100 Yuan voucher to spend on anything in the hotel (spa, mini-bar, restaurant). The staff were superb, offering us advice on where to visit and how to get there, although beware of them trying to get you to book the hotel private car to get around which will cost you more than a regular taxi. When I come back to Chengdu next time, I won't even bother looking at other hotel options.
Do not miss a visit to the Chengdu Panda Research Base while you are in Chengdu! For 1000 Yuan, you can even hold a real adult giant Panda - a once in a lifetime experience!
