Excellent standard of accommodation, helpful staff and great breakfast. The location of the hotel is central and the location makes for an interesting walk around the river where you can watch the local people go about their business.

On checking in one is greeted royally by the most charming of staff. We selected a Club Room. It was without doubt an excellent choice, it was very large, afforded great views of the River and the bathroom was enormous and designed on a walk through style. As is often the case when staying in hotels entering is akin to stepping out into a Turkish bath in this regard the Sofitel did not let us down, it was too hot. We set both of the two aircon units to cold in an effort to bring the temperature to a more normal level. We failed, the darn system continued to expel nothing other than hot air. A call to house keeping was followed by a speedy visit and info that there was only heat available as it was "winter time" True it was but the sun was shining and it added to the problem. We were given a fan and had the windows opened but confess the room remained overly hot throughout our stay. Another problem was the drain smell that we experienced two or three times whilst in residence, it appeared to rise up from the shower drain, maybe assisted by our use of the fan? The club lounge also disappointed. The staff, like all we met were charming but the items on offer were meagre when compared to other Club Lounge setups. White and red wine, beer, but no spirits and not a lot else on offer in the snack line either. Breakfast within the lounge was also limited in the food on display. One felt guilty in taking more than three pieces of water melon for instance as the plate at best only contained four small segments and the same could be said for all other food on display.
We chose to try both the Asian restaraunt and the more western buffet style establishment. The former was a massive disappointment, offering little to entice one to come back, maybe a reason why there where but two others eating during our entire time, it was spooky quiet with once more excellent staff serving apparently no customers. The fare on offer in the buffet was excellent, it was hot tasty and all embracing. One could enjoy both Chinese and Western food. Wine was not so available, more than one items was on the menu but not in stock.
It is a shame to create a picture of failings as this is NOT the case but the items shown need managements attention if the hotel is to compete with the others in town. It has too many good points to allow the criticisms I have shown to cause its reputation to be tarnished.

Room Tip: Be prepared for a room that you can only cool by opening the windows, albeit they only open an inch or two. The downside for the ability to seek fresh air is the noise from outside, at night the construction site over the road becomes hyperactive with soil removing lorries.

Dear Guest,

First of all, thank you for your email. As I said, your feedback is very important to us and I really appreciate that you share your experience with us.

On the other hand, I am very sorry about the temperature problem and I am surprised that the fan and the open window did not really help. However, this was a very sensitive issue as we have as well other guests complaining that it was too cold sometimes, and we need to find a compromise as our centralized Air conditioning system cannot be adjusted individually. we adjusted the Air-conditioning depending on the outside temperature and the cooler we can go is 23 degrees which is quite comfortable for people living in.

Furthermore, we really appreciate your constructive comment on our club floor and please rest assured that we are taking the appropriate measures to address the problem and prevent future occurrence.

Please accept my apologies again and we are looking forward to your next stay to witness our improvement!

Yours sincerely,

Hanson Xu

I've stayed at the Sofitel Wanda Chengdu twice now, 9 days duration both times. Overall, I found the hotel to be excellent.

Positives:
1) Value for money; I think I paid about (AUD)$1500 for 9 nights.
2) Excellent service; All the staff were very polite and courteous. Quick check in.
3) Large rooms; massive rooms and bathrooms, very comfortable bed. View on the river side is far superior.
4) Breakfast buffet is pretty good, with a large range of food. Very fresh.
5) Walking distance to Jinli St, Wide and Narrow Alley, Jiu Yan Bridge, Lan Kwai Fong, Renmin Park
6) Reasonable gym facilities

Minor gripes:
1) Room cleanliness could have been slightly better at the beginning of the second stay.
2) The Japanese restaurant wasn't very good.
3) There was nearly nothing on television!

Room Tip: The river side is much more spectacular.
