“Interesting but Mandarin is more or less necessary”
Reviewed 4 January 2013 via mobile

Very limited English was spoken here and the girls at the front desk didn't speak any at all. The hotel has a grand lobby but the rooms are nothing special, if not a little tacky. Although I asked for a double, they first gave us a twin. We asked for another room and they gave us the corner suite without any trouble.

The breakfast is Chinese style and forget about the coffee. There's not that much near the hotel, but taxis are easy enough to get from there.

There is travel agency in the left hand corner of the lobby but they don't speak English. The travel agent seemed a bit pricey so unless you are desperate, I would suggest you use other tour services.

The staff are pleasant enough but particularly helpful or knowledgeable. This is more of a function hotel than a tourist hotel so expect to see a wedding take over the lobby on any given week.

Overall, the experience wasn't too bad and everything seemed clean if a little rundown.

If you like to taste real Xinjiang, you need to be close to Uigur people who still live close to the Grand Bazar (Da Bazha). The hotel is conveniently located in walking distance from the Uigur area with great ambiance but the service is poor even for fluent Chinese speakers. At the desk the only English speaker is an Uigur man, the Chinese girls are not very helpful. Ask for room on the refurbished floors (such as 7 or 8). Beware of the check out, the staff need to check your room (jian cha) before returning your deposit. They usually make up one fault or another.

Room Tip: Refurbished floors, such as 7 or 8

Stayed here on about three separate occasions throughout my trip to Xinjiang in 2009.
Lobby is very grand and in the Uighur style. There is a restaurant just past the lobby that the locals seem to flock to on the weekends. Breakfast was served at this restaurant. I am vegetarian so some choices were limited, but it was a lot better than other hotel breakfasts we encountered in other parts of Xinjiang.
Staff ranged from disinterested to really helpful. You're more likely to find staff who can speak Chinese or Russian than English. However, staff member TINA was fabulous, she speaks the best English out of the staff and went out of her way to help us. Staff remembered us on our return visits.
One time we seemed to be upgraded to a newer kind of room with a more modern bathroom, which was nice. The other times rooms and bathrooms were acceptable but not really modern.
You can use internet connection in the room for a charge. I can't remember exact price but it was cheap for us as foreigners.
The hotel does room service. No English TV channels aside from CCTV9. Beds are hard, typical for this part of China especially, but definitely not the hardest I encountered (that dubious honour went to our hotel in Kashgar!).
Location was good for us as we were in the more Uighur area. There are some market stalls opposite that sell the famous skewers, plus Uighur bread and fruit. There is also a small convenience type store run by friendly people.
The Number 1 bus leaves close to the hotel and it goes both to the Renmin Square area and, in the other direction, to the bus station.
On our last check-out there was some confusion about prepayment through our local travel agent, due to an inept staff member who was asleep at the desk when we arrived, and we were delayed a bit as they had to call up the manager and a communication barrier ensued, as Tina was not on duty. I can laugh at this now but it was frustrating at the time, especially as we had stayed there under the same terms twice before with no problem. However, it was eventually resolved in our favour.
Our trip to Urumqi and the rest of Xinjiang was very memorable and while sometimes difficult, I'm really glad we went. I would recommend this hotel-- try to get the newest rooms if you can.
