“Nice place, but a bit overpriced”

East Lake of Shaoxing

The most interesting thing about the East Lake is the fact that it's man-made. Otherwise it looks just like an ordinary lake in an ordinary Chinese urban park. But in order to really appreciate the way it was carved in the rocks over centuries, you have to take a boat tour, because you can't really see that in detail from afar. And here comes the catch - the very short boat ride (less than 20 minutes) is overpriced and together with the entrance ticket it comes to more than 100RMB a person, a bit too much for a nice, but pretty short experience.

We spent a long morning here (wife, daughter, and I) and enjoyed our time. But we've not gone back and probably won't. I'll admit, we went in Winter, so the weather was cold and the flowers weren't in bloom; still, there's just not a lot to see or do any time of year. The "lake" is the result of a dredging project and, as such, is long and narrow with steep, manmade cliffs on one side. There's lots of mostly-manmade rock formations, some pavilions, bridges and walkways... Typical Chinese park. It's pretty and relaxing, but...
Admission is too high, transportation is nearly non-existent, and there's next to nothing to eat or drink (bring your own!). Like many such Chinese attractions, it's worth spending time at with friends and family, if you happen to find yourself in the area; but it's nothing I'd bother to take real tourists to.

The East Lake scenic area is a beautiful place. the boat trip goes through a gorge with very steep walls, with the boatman rowing with his feet

East Lake is located 6 km east of the Shaoxing ancient city in Zhejiang Province which is well-known for its wine. Touted as the place to see a magnificent famed landscape garden with artful combinations of cliffs, grottoes, stone bridges and water, it was once a mountain rich in blue stones but became a quarry during the Han Dynasty. Later during the Sui Dynasty, the quarrying was expanded and with years of quarrying, half of the mountain was soon cut away and a lake formed. During the late Qing Dynasty, it was embanked and separated from the river. It was a picturesque and interesting tourist attraction if not for the morning downpour! However, not to be daunted by the weather and not to disappoint the boat men who had waited patiently in their Wupeng Boat or "black-awning boat", found only in Shaoxing, we took the ride in twos and threes. The boat tour was both relaxing and interesting for the boat man expertly weaved his boat under the numerous bridges and in and out of the caves with us hanging onto our umbrellas! If you are thinking of trying the boat ride, don’t forget to tip the boat man after the ride cos you can see his grateful and pleased look! I bet he must have wait a long time to give you a ride!
