“Good experience”
Reviewed 22 April 2014

Worth going as it is relatively cheap, fun way to spend half a day. Feel like you are being squeezed by the locals for every penny and some are very persistant. Mud Volcano itself is a strange experience and well worth doing but try to get there early as it can get very busy and as we experienced they put as many people into the pool as possible.

“fun”
Reviewed 6 April 2014

This was such a fun experience, the mud is hot and you just float there, so even if you cannot swim you don't sink and you'll have fun. For a couple of dollars you will get a massage inside the mud. Days after we still had mud inside our ears, but your skin will be baby soft. After the volcano experience we went to the beach where we had lunch. Great fun experience!

“Adding to the chorus...”
Reviewed 27 March 2014

Yes, you absolutely should go here. It's weird and fun. Bring small bills so you can pay all of the people who help you (the photographer, the person who massages you, the person who washes your clothes, the person who watches your sandals at the foot of the volcano). Note that massages are optional - you can say no. You also don't have to leave your sandals at the foot of the mountain - you can leave them with the rest of your belongings. The photographer knows what he's doing and took a bunch of terrific photos for us. Go early if possible. If not, you'll be in a tub of mud with a bunch of strangers. Which can also be a good time, too.

“Fun day trip from Cartagena”
Reviewed 18 March 2014

Spending a few hours at the Volcan de Totumo is a great way to spend half of a day. We booked a tour for $25/person which included transportation to the volcano and lunch. You really feel weightless in the mud, and you can't really swim or stand. It is a really interesting experience. If you aren't totally creeper out by the men offering massages, spend $1 and get a little massage for about five minutes.

It is probably best to go with a tour group, as I think it might be a little difficult to go on your own.

“Fun activity for everyone!”
Reviewed 17 March 2014 via mobile

Swimming in the mud was unlike anything we had experienced before, and was well worth the trip. You climb up a steep set of stairs then climb down into a pool of mud. There are people to hold your belongings at the top and take pictures of you as you are climbing down and in the mud (for a tip, which you give at the end). We spent as long as we wanted, although the pool got quite busy after us and there was a line to get in (get there early! 8:30ish). You will then be washed off by women who will clean your suit in the river, but the water is cloudy enough that you can't see anyone.
I would have rated the trip a 5 Iif it were not for the issue of tipping. Everyone will come to you at the end and request/demand tips. It is not an issue of expense (we were happy to provide fair compensation); however, it is confusing to have many people asking for money at the end (with a group). Pay attention to who provided services for your group and bring lots of small bills (1000, 2000, 5000 pesos) because you cannot give one tip for the group. It would be much easier if there was simply a higher single fee.
