“More than good value ~ A hidden GEM!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 October 2013

I arrived late about 10pm after a long flight and was greeted by a charming young man who brought me a cold columbian beer straight away. He carried my bag - escorted me to my basic but clean and amply equipped double room (fridge, ceiling fan, TV, towel, soap & TP). He adjusted the a/c which was too super cold and bid me good night. I turned off the A/C and just used the very efficient ceiling fan. The bed was firm, pillows: one soft & one hard to suit everyone's preference. The towels were clean white new and fluffy. Breakfast which was inc was excellent by the pool in the courtyard. Fresh berry juice called MORA or Guava - papaya, water melon, canteloupe fruits, breads, jams, and then a plate of beautifully cooked scrambled egg with onions & tomatoes, corn pancakes and a hunk of local soft cheese. SNR MARTA does not speak english but then hey I dont speak spanish. She was always happy to greet you with a big smile as were EVERY member of her team. The place was spotless - it is an extremely well cared for property in a quiet location for the most part (98%) in an interesting little side street just around the corner from the marina - 5 mins walk. I felt SAFE day or night in the neighbourhood walking around solo. No one troubled me - hassled me - and I was taking pictures of everybody who did not mind at all. In fact they embraced the opportunity to oblige happily. This is an up and coming area and the restaurant/hotel on the corner just 100yds charges $200USD a night and its a stones throw. For $55USD a night inc breakfast this was an amazing little gem that I stumbled on. I have made the mistake to book another more expensive place inside the old walled city and now having been here 4 days I realise it is only $3USD (6000 pesos) in a cab to get to the old city - or a 10 - 15 walk. I was too hasty and should of stayed here. It is perfectly central for those people that are independent minded travellers and love the oldy worldy charm of one of the 1st neighbourhoods of Cartagena called Getsemani.

My wife and I stayed here 5 nights. Everyone here went out of thier way to accomadate us and make us feel welcome. if you want lunch, let them know ahead of time. only about 6000 pesos.
there is a small plaza about 2 blocks away, street food and a few restruants. Cento is in walking distance or taxi 6000 pesos. la casa de cerveza is a block away too. very friendly people, secure, relaxing. true they dont have hot water, that is typical in Cartagena unless you are staying at a higher end hotel. nice patio area to sit and watch the 2 tortugas.
I have been to Cartagena many times and have stayed at many places. I like this location because Boca Grande and Laguito gets tiresome and too many vendors, not to mention traffic is a pain to get to centro.

I always look for places to stay where one can feel at home and yet feel the personality of the location he is visiting ... Casa las palmas is all about it. Coziness, cleanliness, perfect location and full of the charm that Cartagena has to offer. From the quality of the bed, to the yummy breakfast to the friendly staff, everything made my stay in Cartagena just perfect .... thank you very much, I hope to come back soon!

I recently visited Cartagena to see friends and they booked me in to this hotel. Frankly this was the biggest favour they've ever done me. It started with a "complimentary" taxi from the airport to the hotel. I arrived late at night but the greeting I received was warm and friendly and immediately put me at ease.

They showed me to my room and set the air conditioning up for me. Everything was really nice and relaxed. Breakfast (at a civilised 9.30am) on the terrace was superb (coffee; fresh fruit; freshly squeezed fruit juice; 'Colombian style' scrambled eggs; locally baked bread) and tasted absolutely fantastic.

The hotel itself is clean and tidy; very secure (this is quite important); the central part / terrazza is open, shady and really great to relax in and have a coffee, with plenty of comfortable seats and a WiFi connection (if you need one). The pool, whilst not being large, is simply wonderful to splash around in on a hot day and really refreshing. Both heat and humidity can be an issue if you aren't acclimatised, so the pool is a real life saver in the hot part of the day.

The rooms are clean and large with really effective air conditioning; large flat screen TV (if you really want to watch one); a lockable safe for your passport and other valuable items; large shower; CLEAN towels and plenty of them and are all you could want for comfort, cleanliness and relaxation.

Some travellers complained that there is no hot water. This is true, there isn't any.. However, with the ambient temperature being generally in the mid to upper 30's and very high humidity, quite frankly hot water would be the last thing you'd want. The "cold" water runs lukewarm in any event so a "cold" shower is really refreshing.

Pricewise, the hotel is really great value for money. It is situated in the heart of Getsemani with easy access to other parts of Cartagena when you need. The staff have permanent smiles and nothing is too much trouble for them. If you want to experience Colombian hospitality at its best then this is the place to stay. I loved it and I will absolutely definitely go back to stay with them again.

Room Tip: Try to get a room in the older part of the hotel at the back and on the first floor. They are larger...

We were surprised that a hotel in this price range does not have hot water. Apparently the owner who lives in Italy does not feel it is necessary in Cartagena`s tropical climate. But enough hot water to make a body temperature shower possible would significantly improve our opinion of this hotel. We did not feel we received good value for the price we paid (182,000 cop per night).

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in early April 2011 and highly recommend it to other travellers. We had a double bed and a twin, a/c (required!), clean tiled floors, large safe, closet, and a simple but clean bathroom. There was also cable TV with CNN. No hot water but water is lukewarm and refreshing. Very nice lobby, small pool good for a quick refresh. Very quiet inside, peaceful. Wifi available in lobby area. Only drawback is that there was no maid service during our stay - one towel each, no emptying garbage, no toilet paper replenishment - not a big deal, the staff is very friendly and will respond to your needs if you ask them. Breakfast was included and was very good. We paid 150,000 COP per night, so this is a mid-range hotel. It's about an easy 15 min walk to the Old City, and 10 min to the restaurant area of Getsemani (Indian restaurant on Calle San Andres is delicious!). There is a lovely square 5 min away where you can sit and watch the local night life - kids playing soccer, etc. This hotel is in an area where the local live, gives great insight into their living conditions. We found it to be a safe area but were never out past 9 pm. We also did the Mud Volcano tour which was very well organized and definitely worth the money (40,000 COP each arranged through the Casa Vienna hostel on Calle San Andres).

We ended up here running away from an awful hotel in Cartagena centro. We had an amazing stay! Very clean and cozy place, with great staff and amazing service. The breakfast is included in the price (35USD Jan 2011) and is delicious and well served! Dona Marta was a great manager, very nice and wishing to help. Totally coming back here! The only bad bit is the pool, is small and doesnt get any sun during the day :(
