“surprisingly cheap with pool and jacuzzi”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 October 2013

Very friendly staff and lovely refreshing Moorish inspired architecture. The pool and rooftop jacuzzi make this a haven in the middle of Cartagena, just outside the old city.
The kitchen can get a little hot but is relatively clean and modern, Compared to other accommodation we saw of a similar price and higher, this is a godsend!

At a recent stay I found the staff friendly and helpful and the location convenient to restaurants and just a short walk to the ancient walled city. The room was clean and pleasant opening on to a courtyard with a pool - safe and secure.

Nice staff. Very good location - in Getsemani - off main road but nice quiet street. Its not 'luxury' - it is a little bit worn, but the pool is nice and for the price you won't find a better option (believe me I spent days checking out hotels in Cartegena! it is quite an expensive city). They have 2 'sister' hotels too - we stayed at Hotel Villa Colonial - that is good too - it doesn't have a pool but its a more modern, clean hotel & has a nice roof terrace.

I was in Cartagena for a month and after the first week decided a place with a pool would be great and switched to Casa Mara based on the pictures and reviewing. On my first night I was put in room 208 and it was a dump. Dated and complete lack of decor. I was disgusted and immediately asked to be moved. I was moved the next day and while the room was an improvement, really anything would have been. While the room was large, the decor was dated (including the TV but I never used it so maybe it worked fine?) and the towels were so worn that sometimes they had holes. Cleanliness was not up to my standards, nor could I get a regular wi-fi signal which is a problem for me. The staff were very sweet and I did enjoy some time in the pool area although again everything seems old and worn and not like the pictures. This place could be so charming with an updated look...it's a real shame.

I've stayed in Casa Mara many weeks spread over 3 months. It was my base in Cartagena. The reason I did was because it is fine with me riding me expensive motorbike into the courtyard and parking it next to the pool. Also I'd get a discount on the rooms for 'being a frequent guest'

I know the hotel is got sale but fur to high expectation it's not changing hands. That's a shame since what is needed is a bit of investment. Investment in the hardware as noted by many and investment in professional staff. The place has great charm on the exterior as you can see on pictures posted here.

Unfortunately the rooms are so bad with bathrooms really not up to scratch, no services beyond laundry (and keep an eye on your clothes for that) that you're better off finding another one in the same neighbourhood (plenty on offer). As long as you're not on a bike like me you've got plenty of options.

The hood is quite entertaining. This is good for me but some may be a bit less impressed with night street life. Be aware.

We went to Casa Mara because of a recommendation and we were absolutely disappointed!
The hostel is a very nice colonial building but it is not maintained at all. The guy at the entrance asked kind of rude if we had a reservation. We did and so we checked in. We did not get any information of anything and were taken to our room. We both were kind of speechless because the room was completely different from what we expected! It looked like in prison! A tiny little window, now space at all and the doors were seethrough! And all that at a cost of 130.000 COP (65US$) without breakfast and the internet was working neither. It doesn't have anything to do with the pictures shown on their homepage.
We went out trying to find another hostel, which we did (Casa Baluarte, only a few steps away was much more nicer and cheaper!). As they were full the first night, we left Casa Mara after one night without problems, because of our reservation for three nights. That was the only positive thing!
If they would take care about their lovely building, it could be a beautiful hostel. It is really a pity that is so run down...

I stayed here 3 nights during my visit to beautiful Cartagena. It was walking distance (10 minutes) to the Clock Tower entrance to the old city. The staff was very helpful, the room was comfortable and good-sized, and the price was right. They have a small pool for cooling off in the tropical heat. They do laundry there as well. Breakfast is included, but not on the premises...they give you a voucher for a simple breakfast half a block away. You can also buy tickets at the hotel for boats to Playa Blanca. I definitely recommend this place.

Room Tip: I heard that upstairs rooms were larger, but as a single, it wouldn't matter
