“Worth the drive”
Reviewed 31 March 2013

We spent one night/2 days at Karmairi before heading home. The reason being was we had a late flight and needed a late checkout and somewhere we could shower before heading to the airport and Karmairi was a good place to do that. 20 minutes out of Cartagena, down a dirt road and you arrive at Karmaira. it's a 12 room hotel/spa on the beach. We arrived on a Sunday. The outdoor grille was going, the sun beds were set up on the beach, the pool was inviting. It was heaven. The thing we didn't love was our room. The room was very simple, clean, all in white and looked out over an a/c unit, it was okay for one night. If you go to Karmairi and it matters to you where you room is situated ask for one of the suites overlooking the ocean. But with that being said we loved the hotel. It has a Balinese feel to it. Many different areas to relax at around the pool. The staff couldn't do enough for you. I had a hot stone massage at the spa which is next to the pool with individual treatment cabanas. The food was terrific. A Sunday lunch of grilled seafood with patacones and a cold beer at a picnic table overlooking the beach was superb. Dinner was excellent and our late lunch of grilled lobster before we headed to the airport was so good! We walked the beach in the morning with a cup of coffee, we watched the sun go down in the evening and we watched the Oscars in Spanish overdubbing! The only bummer are the stray dogs on the beach. That always bothers me but they are totally harmless. You'll just want to take them all home! All in all totally relaxing and a perfect way to end our vacation in Colombia!

Room Tip: If it matters, choose one of the suites overlooking the ocean

I stayed in Karmairi with my girlfriend on March 20th and 21st 2013. We were so surprised, I asked for an additional night and they even gave me a discount on the third night. The front desk guy Omar was extremely polite and welcoming, in general the staff is amazing. It is true that the location is a little distant from the walled city (only 15 min in one of their free shuttles) but this is what makes this place so romantic and unique. My girlfriend is so delighted she is telling everybody on facebook about this place, we are definitely coming back. No complaints. Si quieren un lugar diferente, un poco alejado del bullicio de la ciudad, limpio, romantico y con excelente servicio les recomiendo Karmairi Spa Hotel.

This hotel is a successful fusion of Balinese architecture and decor with the magic of the Caribbean, ensconced in a tranquil, beautiful beach area. The pool area is fabulous, massages done by trained personnel, excellent attention, great view. The beaches on the mainland of Cartagena are not the best, (compared to say, the fabulous Rosario islands a few kilometers out from Cartagena which have beaches that rival any in the world) but the Karmairi Hotel offers a private beach area, bar and restaurant service on the beach, and one quickly is taken in by the breathtaking beauty of it all. The food is "high cuisine" although somewhat over-priced in some instances, original and exotic meals with a touch of oriental spices. The staff is courteous, well trained, most rooms are furbished in the oriental style with views of the sea. Since it does not admit children under the age of fifteen, it is unusually quiet and peaceful, good selection of soothing music in the pool area, great for couples who are romantically inclined, or people looking for "The Great Escape".

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the sea, preferably on the higher level, to get "the bird´s eye v...

This was a fabulous an chic hotel however in the middle of nowhere so if you plan on staying here know that it will be a nice quiet get away. You literally have your own private beach. The grounds are clean, rooms chic and exoctic and food is to die for! The drinks are also delicious. I would highly recommend this for a quiet getaway. You can take a bus into the city but I suggest staying in the city for a couple of days and then staying on the resort for a couple of days to unwind! Its a gem of a hotel and staff is very friendly.

We spent a few nights at Karmairi at the end of our 2 week trip to Colombia. We loved it. It does have some flaws but they don't matter because service is wonderful, everyone has a smile and a solution to any problem. The place is beautiful although the beach, as everywhere in Cartagena, is not Caribbean, so don't expect that.
Finally, I have read reviews that complain you can only eat in the hotel because it is in the middle of nowhere - and while this is half true, keep in mind it has 3 free shuttles a day that go downtown Cartagena, so you could go for lunch or dinner, also the fact that it is in the middle of nowhere is what makes it peaceful and unique. Last but not least, the food is really good and prices are not higher than in Cartagena. Everything we ate was DELICIOUS.
As a final note, the day we arrived the neighbors had a party and the noise in our room was quite annoying, we asked if it would be possible to be moved to a different room and this was done in a minute and on top of it we were give a complimentary upgrade with sea views. We were delighted, of course.
We definitely recommend this place :)

This hotel was average. The facility is nice, the decor is hip, and the staff was great, but there were just too many other things that I felt were lacking.

The hotel is in the middle of nowhere, so much so that the only restaurant that you will be eating at is the one in the hotel, and it's overpriced relative to other great restaurants in and around Cartagena. There are also a lot of bugs... not in the room or anything, but if you try to walk the beach out front or sit out on the patio and take in the view, you will be eaten alive without bug spray (thankfully the staff has this on hand). Also, don't stay in the far rooms on the back side. The walls in the rooms don't extend all the way to the ceiling, so you can hear everything going on outside your room (neighbors in the bathroom), and everyone can hear everything going on inside your room (sorry, no romance here).

But this hotel did have some things going for it: cool decor, really nice pool (hard to find in CTG), fantastic staff (they anticipate your needs), and a laid back atmosphere.

Uncertain as to what to expect upon driving down a dirt road leading the a narrow alley, we were stunned. The hotel is beautiful, peaceful, and perfect.

When we first checked in, we were greated with an amazing Piña drink and cold towels (very refreshing), the lady at the front desk "upgraded" us. We went from a Standard Junior to THE suite; 301. The room is picturesque for a honeymoon. King bed over looking the water, double rain shower head, and a balcony large enough for entertainment.

The restaurant has plenty to offer, from vegetarian, to pescatarian, to steak and chicken. All of the menu options are innovative and utilize fresh fruit and vegetables from the area.

The bar has amazing drinks and everything is made to order. Be sure to order early and often because it takes time for each drink to be made. The Piña Colada is the best we've ever had.

The hotel has beach access with extremely soft sand and little dunes making it beautiful. Don't expect crystal blue waters though, the ocean has mud causing a brown color.

The pool is a sort-of infinity pool, with a graduating entrance.

The hotel is only 14 rooms, so don't expect a full resort setting. Its a small place but full of character and customer service. Wilmer was our waiter for our meals, and he was the best when it came to anything we asked for. The staff of ~10 was super friendly and wanted to make sure that we had the most relaxing experience possible.

When my fiancée asked for buenuleos and pondebonos for breakfast, the restaurant was not prepared to make these items, one of the staff members went to the bakery to pick them up.

The is a van that will take you to down-town Cartagena, if you can plan your flights around those transfer times, there wouldn't even be a charge for taxi or transfer fee.

We will be returning, this place is among the best we've ever been.

Room Tip: 201, 202, and 301 beach facing. Avoid 101
