“Enjoyable Stay”
Reviewed 26 July 2013

I have had occasion to stay at this Hotel twice. During my stay I found the staff cordial and eager to assist with any need. The facilities are fairly new and well kept. They also have residential living which adds to the desire to keep things well maintained. Even the short walk to the beach is enjoyable since they have a nice water theme around the hotel. The view from the higher floors is beautiful no matter what side of the hotel you stay in.

Internet is good and stable. Regarding the restaurant, good food but a bit on the expensive side. My stay included breakfast which was good.

Room Tip: Ask for higher floors to get the best views.

Great hotel, excellent location, friendly staff. I was with my wife and daughter and had a pleasant experience. This hotel is located in La Boquilla area, which is more quiet than Bocagrande. At the end of Las Americas there is great local restaurant named Blas el Teso, with fresh sea food in front of the beach. Next to the hotel there is a small store called C-Store. The rooms are very comfortable, all brand new.

Room Tip: Ask for a quite place. There rooms in front of the sea, beautiful and silent.

For the price it's not worth it. The beach area is very dirty and vendors are bothering you constantly. My wife made the mistake of having a drink with ice and ended up with a stomach bacteria. The room was clean, but extremely small. The balcony door lock was broken. They had a party by the pool which kept us up all night with the noise. The restaurant food is expensive and mediocre. It is located far from everything to do in Cartagena.

Let's start off with a positive note The Good: the hotel rooms themselves were clean and nice with great beds. If you did not look off the balcony to the right or left and overlooked the shoddy construction zone and abandoned boat in the mud, as well as the unpainted balconies of the apartment buidlings attached to the property (more on that later) you would swear you were inside any nice hotel in Cabo or Puerta Vallarta. The restaurant food was decent and the free breakfast each morning was nicer than ones at lesser chain motels in the USA. The pool area was nice and pretty. The staff was polite and friendly and addressed our concerns immediately...like when we repeatedly got locked out of our room when the door battery broke. The Bad: I would not stay in this area of Cartagena again. We were constantly taking cabs to the Centro (old part/walled city)...which was much more vibrant. And you took your life in your hands every time you get into a Colombian taxi! Those are some crazy drivers! Lanes are more like guidelines. The beach was not safe or nice even though the ocean water was very clear...this is not the Mexican Riviera....although it could be one day and several hotels are being built (i.e. the construction out the window) but that day is not here yet. The Ugly: We were there for a wedding and several of us got booked into the apartments that are connected to the hotel. These were not acceptable and in fairness to Hotel Sonesta, they have nothing to do with the apartments. But we had almost 60 people staying at the property between the hotel and the apartments and the apartments are independently owned...i.e. they are not uniformly decorated with even the same linens/towels and some were much better than the others. Let's just say ours was not one of the good ones and we promptly left and moved to the Hotel where we were much happier for the next three nights.

Room Tip: We were on the top floor/8th floor and had a nice center view with less noise from below.

Paying $170/night to stay here is a rip-off.

Major complaints:
- hotel exterior and balcony chipped and dirty, door handle to balcony faulty
- breakfast good but restaurant food poor (the attempt at pizzas was shocking) and expensive ($18 for pork and chips)
- no umbrellas by pool
- the beach is a scam-zone ($60 for a massage, $100 for some oysters)
- party in building opposite went on until 6am on first night - staff seemed unconcerned by booming tunes
- $3 charge for using coffee equipment in room and $5 for a bottle of water. Joke.

In their defence they are trying to do the place up (builders and painters were everywhere). But under these circumstances should they not offer a discount?

Staff very friendly but would avoid unless paying significantly less than rate above.

We stayed one night during the low season and received royal treatment at reception, room, pool and restaurant. A la carte menu was top class and dishes perfectly cooked.
The place was impeccable, beds super comfortable, every appliance worked including wi-fi an the sunrise was spectacular.
The hotel is a little away from the old city but only 15 minutes from the airport.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony with views on the quiet side of the hotel

My lasting impressions.....
Cartagena is trying very hard to compete with the other 'sunny destinations' like Mexico, Cuba, or the Dominican, but they are not there yet.
Our trip including flight from Cali Colombia to Cartagena Colombia and our hotel for 4 nights was about $600 CDN each. This also included our breakfast, but not lunch or dinner. The beach here was nice but we heard that the beach near the old city is packed with people endlessly trying to sell you stuff. When I arrived in Cali is was amazed how clean it was....however Cartagena is not as clean and the city reminded me a lot of India with garbage everywhere. The hotel was pleasant...nice service, good food, nice beach especially if you rent a tent and chairs, and well kept pools. The only negative was that I felt we were always looking for towels in our room and at the pool and there are no drinks allowed at the pools. Other than that I have nothing negative to say, however nothing really blew me away....
