“Older Hotel with lots of charm and a charming staff, as well!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 October 2013

Excellent location!Boardwalk and beach were right outside our balcony! We were able to walk to town and never had to drive to anything!Rooms were clean and the staff were so kind and courteous! My daughter is disabled and very outgoing (or shall I say demands attention),the staff were so very patient and sweet with her, especially Milton as she seemed to really enjoy his company. This truly made this a little get away that my daughter will surely never forget and I am sure she will torture me to book her another stay since these trips are for her.The Drag Show in The Paradise Night Club was wonderful (my daughter said spectacular) and featured some excellent performers! We will definitely be back sooner then later. It is a wonderful older hotel with so much charm and a charming staff as well!Thank you for your kindness!

Room Tip: We stayed on the 4th floor which gave us a beautiful view of the ocean and boardwalk! Loved the balc...

We are super excited to hear that you had a great time during your stay at The Empress. Customer service is our number one priority here, and we strive for everyone to enjoy themselves. Its so great when people can get away and actually be able to relax. Paradise's drag shows are always a good time to, and the performers change weekly so you never know who you will see. Thank you again and we hope to see you soon :-)

Never stayed at the Empress before, last time I'd even paid attention to it was about 10 years ago or so and it's great location aside, much like a lot more of the boardwalk area was at the time, it was a rather sad looking ol' gal from the outside. Came in for a special event this weekend, keeping fingers crossed that the "newer" reviews were right, and was absolutely delighted from start to finish. All cleaned up outside, immaculate from the lobby to the hallways to the room, comfortable, clean bed and bath, and super friendly front desk staff. Couple that with the revitalized area overall, I can't recommend the Empress enough and am looking forward to getting back soon.

My wife and I went to the Empress in early September, 2013. Driving from the Parkway, the area doesn't look very promising ("Where are you taking me?" my wife said), but don't let that dissuade you. Once you get to the hotel, things look a lot better, although the lobby is simple to the point of meager. There were some pinball games, a small front desk and a couple of couches. Let me simply try and list the pros and cons:

Pros: Excellent location--the best around--right off the boardwalk
Beautiful view of the ocean and the boardwalk from the balcony
Clean rooms with small refrigerators
Easy walk to the lovely part of town and the boardwalk and beach is literally across the street
Friendly, helpful staff

Cons: No TV remote in room (this may have just been our room)
Continental breakfast was very, very sparse. No decaf coffee (unusual) and just a few bagels and pastries. Other hotels offer cereal and much more. I had to go out for coffee and there was no place nearby.
Parking was in a small, poorly paved lot aside the hotel, and is shared with the nightclub. So if you take your car out at night, there's a good chance there'll be no spots for you when you return.

Comments: The hotel sits atop a lively nightclub that is rocking until about 3am. We were on the top floor so this didn't bother us and we rather liked it. We were there in September though, so I'd imagine it was a little more subdued.

On the whole, we really enjoyed our stay at the Empress and would stay there again.

Room Tip: Stay on the top floor if you prefer less noise. I don't think there is a fitness center.

Hello and thank you for your review. At first i didnt know how it was going to end, but i am please to hear at the end you enjoyed your stay. We like to hear what people have to say good and bad so it gives us something to work toward. We are located in a great central park of town where you can pretty much walk to anything shopping, eating or the beach. Parking here can be a little hairy as we do share a lot with paradise, and on weekends sometimes metered parking is the only option. We have tried decaf coffee in the lobby, but most people gravitated towards regular, but it is something to think about as well as some cereals possibly. We are running great fall specials this year so hopefully we will see you again soon.

I recently booked a block of rooms here for my wedding, and could not have been happier with the staff and service. Everyone was helpful and freindly and fabulous. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable, and we loved that all of the rooms had balconies and we could watch the whales breaching from our room!! All of our guests agreed!

Room Tip: Ocean side has best view and north side rooms not above paradise are probably quieter.

The staff at the empress is bar none. I've never felt so welcomed and at home at a hotel. I was there for my brother's wedding, and the staff felt like part of the family. They made the weekend so very Special. The rooms were surprisingly nice. The lobby was pristine, cool and fun. The food at the restaurant is great. It is Loud from the club on Friday and Saturday, but not unbearable.

I'm certain I'll stay there again. And I would recommend it to pretty much anyone!

Uh Oh... well at least you had a good time while you were here. Paradise does tend to make it a good time to anyone who is willing to give it a chance. The restuarant is also on the up with great new menu changes and specials. Our staff here in the whole building always tries to make everyone feel welcome. Hopefully we will see you again soon. we could always use another hug...

Stayed one Tuesday night overnight at the end of summer for a concert at the Stone Pony. Area including the building itself looked a little rundown maybe a bit old school but the location was perfect from the venue and the boardwalk. Got free parking right outside the door, five steps to the car. We were about to be charged higher for the room than we had been quoted, but when I pointed this out they reduced it even more. The room was a one bed ocean view, the only downside to that was maybe the building across the street was slightly in the way and the room didn't have wifi. They offered to switch our room but it wasn't worth moving and allowed us to focus on our trip more. Otherwise everything seemed neat and clean, and the bed as comfy as we had hoped. We liked the area and wished we had more time to explore it. Having left the concert early since we weren't there for the main act, we still got to hear them playing from all across the boardwalk. We especially enjoyed the old school pinball arcade museum down the boardwalk, flat fee for entrance then play all the old games your heart desires. That plus an ice cream and a lemonade stand made a perfect date night. The stay and events were great for a younger couple (19) and maybe people with more travel experience could want more (judging from other reviews that made us a little nervous here and there) but we were more than content. They even shipped my hoodie that I left in the closet to Boston though it did take a couple of weeks.

We have spent many nights there over the past 5 or 6 years. On our most recent visit, we spent two nights at the Empress Hotel in Asbury park, New Jersey in August (for our 2nd wedding anniversary) and it was just a perfect weekend located about 50 yards from the world famous Asbury Park boardwalk and beach on the Atlantic Ocean. The Empress hotel/resort offers a fantastic hotel, gay and gay-friendly nightclub known as Paradise (and it is), the Tabu restaurant where you can get awesome appetizers, a great burger or the best turkey club around Asbury and many other options. The rooms were clean (above average), everything is always in working order, A/C was comfy, so were the beds and the rooms are beautifully appointed with the west side of the hotel facing the large pool and Tiki bars where on summer Sundays the best (and possibly the only) gay Tea-dance on the Jersey shore with the owner (Shep Pettibone) as DJ for the event on most Sundays. We really enjoy dancing as the sun sets. The east side rooms are directed toward the ocean on the upper floors, although the boardwalk and beach are fully visible from any room even with the restaurants and shops across the street. The maid service is excellent and really unobtrusive. You can go out for an hour for breakfast and come back to a spotless room. They even have some pet-friendly rooms for dogs (who do not bark a lot lol). We have been taking our dog Buddie there for a while now. The Empress staff is among the friendliest and most accommodating we have ever come across. When we checked in, we felt as if we came home for a family visit. We can’t wait to go back again for my birthday weekend. Sincerely, Michael, Gerard and Buddie!!!

Room Tip: Upper floors have the best view of the ocean and boardwalk on the east side of hotel. Awesome view...

Michael, Gerard and Buddie,

We are so happy that you decided to spend your special weekend with us. You have been a pleasure from the beginning and we hope you will continue to make the Empress your home away from home for many years. It is couples like you that make working in the service industry a breeze and it doesn't hurt that you have a great dog.....

Kind regards,

Kristin and Staff
