When we visited McBean Lagoon, our plan was to go snorkelling rather than see the site. We went on an excursion organised by the hotel which included going around Providencia and an hour's snorkelling at McBean Lagoon. When you arrive at the Lagoon you have to pay for entry - Colombian Nationals pay 8000 Colombian Pesos, whilst foreigners pay 13500. We then spent about 20 minutes walking up to an overlook which had a nice view at the top. There is someone there from the National Park at the top who helps you climb to the peak and will take all the photographs of you that you want as it's quite narrow and steep. Unfortunately there can be a bit of a queue that develops. Not only that but we completely forgot about snorkelling so that we only had about 10 minutes in the water.
If snorkelling is your primary reason for visiting then you should forget about the overlook and instead enjoy the crystal clear and relatively warm waters instead.
