We were pretty disappointed with our stay at this hotel and not sure how it can be No.2 on trip advisor?! The location is not great and there is nothing around, during the day this is fine as we took local buses to beach and town but at night to have to pay $20 for a taxi each way is a little steep as there are no restaurants close by that open for dinner. The hotel itself is extremely old and basic. They do have air con in the rooms which is a plus but bathrooms very old. For $110 a night there must be better on the a Island. Breakfast was also pretty basic. It's also not on a beach and the hotel pool is more of a scuba diving practice pool and did not look appealing to go in at all.
Would recommend staying on a beach closer to town.

Thank you very much for taking time to write a review as per it helps us find opportunities for improvement. Our position on TripAdvisor is thanks to the positive reviews of most our our guests.
We market our hotel to guests who prefer peace and quiet and enjoy the rural setting of the island instead of our urban downtown.

We also help our guests in their lodging decision-making process by providing distances from the hotel to town and to the closest beaches. This information is provided in our website and also on the websites of the online travel agencies (OTAs) that we work with, including the one you used to make the reservation.

Regarding our facilities, we are conscious of the need to continuously upgrade them and we are always working on this aspect.

We enjoyed our stay very much. We liked being away from the hustle and bustle. And there are scooters and golf carts if you want to get away. Also, buses come by about every fifteen minutes. Lindsay, Marly, and Claudia were very friendly and helpful as we transitioned to the Spanish culture :). Clean room, great swimming pool, good food. My Husband had a severe bout of heartburn one night. The next day, Marly and the kitchen staff made him some green tea. Also a papaya smoothie. We enjoyed the snorkeling across the road. Saw some nice coral and fish. One night, the power was out at dinner time for about an hour and a half. But everyone managed well with the aid of candles and flashlights. The celestial view was fantastic! We shall return!

Room Tip: Ask for the "room with a view". Bring a flashlight or LED head light.....just in case...

It was our great pleasure having you at the hotel and glad to know you enjoyed the peace and quiet that surround us. Natural mint tea does wonders.
We agree that the best snorkeling and diving area in the island is just across the road and the view of the stars at night is amazing.
We are looking forward to your next visit. Thanks for taking time to write a review.

My wife and I booked five nights in January of 2014 based on these fabulous reviews. But what an enormous disappointment we were faced with immediately upon arrival. We are NOT Four-Seasons people. We only expected clean, simple, comfortable, quiet accommodations, and at a location near the water that we might snorkel a bit without getting killed and possibly earning an Open Water Scuba Diving certificate while we were there. Again, our visit here was based on the professional photos taken of the hotel and THESE reviews that rate this hotel No. 1 on the entire island. Yes, the best hotel on the entire island! A number 1 rating is an absurd and unbelievable rating for this hotel.

The hotel is quite long in the tooth and to make up for it, it is not well maintained. It's true that the owner is quite friendly and helpful, and this fact alone will garner an extra star every time. However, the owner's warm and friendly demeanor won't mend the broken neck you'll receive while climbing down a slippery steel pipe ladder - your only access to the water, into the surge - that is if you're brave enough to attempt a swim. The entire western coastline of this island is a blockade of sharp jagged lava-rock effectively separating people from water except where a single sloppy concrete path has been poured over the sharp lava rock.

When we confessed to Lindsay - the owner, that we needed to terminate our reservation based on what we clearly saw as dangerous access to the water, he went on the defense and showed us where on his web site FAQ page (below the misleading photo of a beautiful beach two miles away) that it states that there is no beach. We knew there was no beach, but we certainly didn't realize we couldn't safely enjoy the Caribbean ocean from the hotel. You will not see photos of the jagged shoe-shreading lava rock coastline on the website. Anyway, he then informed us that there would be a one night's reservation penalty for bailing out early. So we stayed one night. It certainly was a penalty. It was horrible. The wall between ours and the neighboring room was so acoustically thin as to be nonexistent. It might as well have been a curtain. The couple next door played music far louder than it needed to be until about 11:30 pm and they spoke even louder to each other in spanish in order to overcome it. We laid there that night listening to every song they played and every word they said. In the morning we showered in a gross stall shower. It was like a large petri dish. Bath supplies consisted entirely of two rounds of sandy soap the size of a fifty-cent-piece that didn't make suds. Thankfully, there was hot water via an electric shower-head and no one got electrocuted. There is an old tube-type TV on a wall bracket near the door that's always at the ready to bash you in the head as you pass by.

Breakfast, starting at 8:00, was of fruit, previously-made french toast, and oscar-mayer wieners. There is no cooking done on the premises - only heating of previously-prepared food from somewhere else on the island. Dinner was of tasteless frozen shrimp in corn-bread cups (?), and a simple chicken sandwich. Yes, frozen and totally tasteless shrimp here in the middle of the Caribbean.

The sunsets at the Sunset Hotel are pretty nice, but unfortunately you must walk across the street and stand on the side of the road to watch it. There is nary a chair or bench to sit on, nor sand to stand in, only a narrow shoulder littered with debris on the side of the pavement.

Your only transportation is a bus that passes by every 30 minutes or so, or a fifteen dollar taxi if you call for one. There is NO parking here. The only parking space, which was emptied for the website photos, is filled with the owner's car and motorcycles such that you can just scootch by with your luggage.

If total seclusion and tired-out accommodations at Hilton prices is what you're looking for, the Sunset Hotel is the perfect choice. There is nothing anywhere near it. You will be totally isolated. Lindsay is a nice guy though, and perhaps his hospitality will make it all better for you as it apparently did for the other reviewers.

Cost per night here was COP$226,000 (approx. US$119) for the two of us.

We were amazed at how much more we got at a hotel on the other side of the island for ten dollars more per night.

We've traveled and hosteled in South-East Asia, Europe, and each of the Central America countries, and I see 78 reviews giving five stars to this hotel making it the best rated on the island.

I don't get it. This is a forty-five-dollar room and certainly not the best on the island.

Room Tip: There was a barking dog at night. It might have been in the building next to us or in the room next...

Thank you very much for your detailed review.

As soon as you arrived to the hotel, you said you did not wanted to stay. In our point of view, this issue is about you not wanting to pay the applicable cancellation policy you agreed on when you made the reservation via the online travel agency.

This small hotel is in a lovely position on the much less-crowded eastern side of the island - founded by the charming Marley some 20 years ago - the Sunset is now run by Marley and her son, Lindsay, both of whom were kind, helpful and welcoming throughout our five-day stay. Apparently, some guests arrive only to hate the solitude and quietness, so let's be clear: if you want a lively resort and loads of nightlife do not stay here. But DO stay here if you relish a quiet space, perfectly pleasant pool and seating area, gorgeous sea and especially if you're a diver (which we're not, sadly). We had rooms 1 and 2. Room 1 has a sea view but, given you're hadly spending a lot of time in there, it doesn't matter - the sea waits in all its seven turquoise and blue hues just on the other side of the quiet road. You can swim from the little ladder-jetty but the water can be a bit rough, so maybe not great for kids or weaker swimmers, The hotel's big advantage, however, does mean you will need to get everywhere else on the island, including San Andres, by bus - not as daunting as it might sound. Buses pass outside every 30 minutes or so and you can flag one down going in EITHER direction! The buses are also a good way to get your bearings around the island. It takes about 20 mins to get into San Andres but the buses do stop at about 8.30pm so you need to get a taxi back which is about 20,000 to 25,000 pesos (and 30,000 plus after midnight). You can also get on back of a scooter for about 10,000 but as we were a party of three, that was more logistically difficult.

If you're not a diver, get the bus to a very lovely beach at Ricky Cay where you can hire a quiet little spot with shade for the day for 20,000. It's wonderful water and you can wade out to the rock and wreck beyond it. There's a also a good beach restaurant that seemed to do very nice lunches or you can sit in the shade for a cooling Club Colombia. The Sunset also serves dinner which we had twice: one night was terrific, one night was OK (fish very nice, a small steak not great) - or bus into San Andres town, which has more choice - though, to be blunt, bar a few restaurants nothing that special either. San Andres town, generally, is a tax-free shopping hub and, as a result, is a bit soul-less and somehow disinterested. Back at The Sunset, you can enjoy breakfast outside and Lindsay or Marley are nearly always on hand to answer queries, they really do make their guests welcome. The hotel also does a great job, which we didn't properly appreciate at first, in giving guests a hit of fruit at breakfast. This is something of an achievement as, to our constant disbelief, fruit is in short supply on both San Andres and Providencia - all the more surprising given how plentiful and varied it is on the Colombian mainland. All in all, this must be one of the best places to stay on San Andres. I only wish I could dive!

The whole staff was exceptional, but Lindsay and Marly were incredible!! Our first day on the island one member of our group was feeling ill and we were concerned about his ability to go diving. Marly called her personal doctor and set an appointment for him for the following day. She had a taxi waiting for him at the appropriate time and he was taken right in to the see the doctor upon his arrival. He did have bronchitis which kept him from diving for the first 3 days, but Lindsay arranged for a tour of the town and other things to keep our friend entertained while we were diving. Lindsay was very patient and accomodating!! The hotel was clean and the meals prepared by Marly and her staff was excellent!!!! A great place to get away from the crowds!! Sharkys Dive staff was awesome!! We enjoyed our dive experience VERY MUCH!!! Thank you to every one at Sunset and Sharky's!!!!!!

I must admit, I have yet to stay at the Sunset Hotel. But I definitely plan to. I called their phone number because so many guests spoke very highly of Lindsay and Marilyn. I needed some information about the island, as I plan to fly my own small private plan there from the USA. Lindsay took his time to look up phone numbers for me to make contact with the proper authorities at the airport, since I could not find this information anywhere on the internet.
This first trip will just be a refueling stop on my way to Panama. My next trip will be with my wife for a vacation on San Andres. Guess where I plan to stay? Sunset Hotel, of course. When people go out of their way to help a stranger, and there is nothing given in return, those are the type of people I want to do business with.
So, thanks very much, Lindsay. I got in touch with Anthony at the airport and he set everything up for my arrival. Hope to see you in the near future.

We spent a week at sunset hotel for part of our honeymoon and as we near our 1 year anniversary still can't forget the amazing time we had.

We were torn between big luxury hotels or a down to earth family run hotel & are so glad we chose sunset.

Lyndsay, Marley and family made our stay an absolute dream, their local knowledge allowed us to experience something new everyday at their recommendation. You can either keep to yourself or join in for a chat & beer together to find out about the family history & get a taste of local life.

Rooms are neat & tidy, food is fresh & tastey, location is quiet with beautiful sunsets & right across the road from beautiful clear water for snorkeling or scuba diving (run by sunset) - its all so easy!

We hired a scooter so location was great, a short ride is an awesome restaurant Punta Sur - best crab meat on plantains & piña colladas! Then in the other direction is a short cliff jump off a plank & bar / restaurant with beautiful sunsets too. The ride into town is easy if you prefer the hustle & bustle or, just as easy to ask the hotel to call a taxi - everyone knows sunset hotel!

Marly also recommended we go to Providencia & told us where to stay, we changed our plans on a whim to go and what a hidden paradise it was - the clearest water I have ever seen!

We can't praise Sunset Hotel enough & wan to say thank you for the most amazing experience on San Andres.
