Staff was friendly & helpful, but sometimes gave us odd advice-- for example, they knew we were budget travelers, but strongly suggested we take a cab instead of the bus to the airport for our morning flight because the bus didn't start running until 6:30 a.m. (we flagged buses down the day before to confirm what time they started airport service, and were told 4 a.m. by several drivers). Also, in six weeks of traveling, we only experienced bad mattresses twice, one of the instances being in this hostel. You could really feel the springs. Finally, it was not expensive, but overpriced for the quality of the room (and, obviously, the mattresses). Not the worst option, but you might be be able to find something better & more fairly priced elsewhere in the city.

It's a huge building owned by a family that is just not very nice or trusting of people. The dorm room is all the way on the 4th floor and the kitchen smells like urine at night and has no cutting space or counters. The building ("hostel") is home to numerous local families and their children who watch loud television and share the facilities (kitchen) with you. I stayed in this hostel several times in between my visits to sites around Santa Marta and several times i was awakened by the cleaning woman who starts cleaning the dorm at 8-9am, even though check out is at noon. What really upset me about this place was the owner's refusal to restart the router when my computer could not catch the wifi signal because they'd changed some settings and their refusal to let my friend (who does not stay in the hostel) go to the kitchen when i wanted to cook something together with him. Besides this i think they overcharge for hammock stays and laundry service. The perks are the fast internet and the hammock area on the terrace.

I only stayed for one night. The hotel looks better on the outside and it has nice common areas. My single room was the smallest I have ever seen. It had a TV, fan and private, but very tiny bathroom. The shower was crammed-in in behind toilet. It was difficult taking shower in it. The fan was very old and when turned on there was dust, rust and dried grease falling from it directly on the bed. It was unusable. There was a window opening directly into a pleasant courtyard and another window with slats and/or just bars opening into the stairwell. The stairwell had a light shining directly onto the bed at night. The room provided very little privacy and it was difficult sleeping at night. The owners and staff are pleasant. The room was inexpensive, but I did found less expensive and with value elsewhere. I can only recommend this place in emergency and when nothing else is available. But, the hotel may have better rooms than I had.....

The family that runs the place is excellent. The rooms are basic, the terrace is fantastic for socializing and chilling out. The kitchen is good but needs a more constant attention (unfortunately many people don't seem to clean up after themselves and the owners give the kitchen little attention. Really if you're in Santa Marta and want a great budget place, this is it. Just don't expect more than you're paying. Oh, if you're looking for good food at great prices, go no further than across the street. Huge portions of great food served by another amazing friendly family!

I stayed at Casa Familiar for 5 nights in total. 3 nights before I took a trip to Tayrona National Park and 2 nights after I returned from Tayrona National Park.

It was 35,000 for a double room with bathroom, fan and cold water.

There is an excellent roof terrace with hammocks and a seating area. A great area to relax and meet people. There was a hostel further up the street that was 25,000 for a double but I decided that Casa Familiar was worth the extra because of the terrace.

There is free wifi that you can get in the lobby and on the first floor, but nowhere else.

Casa Familiar has a safe luggage store, costing 2000pesos per item, this was perfect as myself and my boyfriend left our large rucksacks in the luggage store while we spent 2 nights at Tayrona.

The room was cleaned well every two nights which I thought was a treat for the price.

Casa Familiar's location is ideal, it's 2mins from the ocean front. There are 3 good restaurants on the same street (one further up the street away from the ocean on the same side was a good and very cheap Colombian restaurant). It's also in close walking distance to the cathedral area, where there are parks, restaurants, food stalls and shops.

The only negative from my stay at Casa Familiar was on my last two nights I was on the 4th floor and the noise from the wind was absolutely horrendous, impossible to sleep. I spoke to a few other travellers and they were having the same problem. So if I went back again I would ask for a more sheltered room!

The owners of this hospederia are more than friendly and more than proud of their hospederia. Very touching. Go here if you are on a budget and like hospitality and dont mind very basic and small rooms.

what this hostel lacks in style(the rooms) it makes up in heart! the rooms are simple and comfortable and clean. the moment you enter casa familiar you are family, nothing is too much trouble. the family has lots of info, love practicing Spanish with you, the grandchildren and kitten are gorgeous! the rooftop view and hamacas top it all off, one of the best hostels I stayed in, in Colombia.
