This is staying at a nice guy's house. The views of the valley below are spectacular, the sunset, watching the lights of Santa Marta slowly come on and the sounds of nature are a relaxing change of pace from the constant honking everywhere else you go in Colombia. It is a nice walk to town, the views in the morning were great, really enjoyed watching all the birds. It is kind of a bring your own food and drink kind of place although he may or may not be cooking something is what we gathered, so be prepared to figure that part out on your own. We ordered a basic Colombian meal from a local place and they delivered which was nice. Since it is like staying at a guy's house, you're pretty much stuck with whoever else is staying there. When we went there were some obnoxious young naive British boys that were pretty unpleasant, so we left the next day. Also, I wouldn't recommend the private bungalow at the top as there is no breeze, no electricity, it is basically a concrete box, it was very hot in July, much better option is just sleeping in the hammocks, they looked much more appealing. Oscar is quite friendly, good company indeed.

Room Tip: Just stay in the hammocks, the room we stayed in was just a concrete box, very basic construction wi...

My partner and I made a special trip to stay at Oscar's after reading all the wonderful reviews. I think that perhaps our experience wasn't typical, as it really didn't gel with what we had read.

The positives are that it is a wonderful spot. The 15 minute trek from the road is definitely worth it and we were fortunate to see fireflies when walking back on our second night - beautiful! It's a great spot to sit and relax or to return to after doing some hiking. The scenery is stunning and you can really take a deep breath and forget everything except the moment.Oscar also speaks perfect English, which can come in handy!

Where our experience wasn't entirely positive was more the 'hosting' side of things. As it is such an intimate house, you really need Oscar or his wife to show you the ropes. We felt left very much alone, although we were asked if we wanted to eat with them, they subsequently changed their mind and we ended up walking into the village both nights for dinner.
We also felt rather unhappy when we saw our bill. We had originally asked for a private room, however when we arrived the 'jungle hammocks' looked great and we fancied sleeping with a view. So we checked if we could sleep in the hammocks instead (whilst leaving our bags in the room). We were the only people there and we were told it was fine to sleep in the hammocks. We would happily have moved our bags if asked. On checkout we discovered that we were charged for both the private room and the hammocks. This made it a really expensive stay, in a beautiful spot, but with basic (and not terribly clean) facilities.
Finally on the first morning Oscar had a blazing, shouting argument with his wife at 6.30 in the morning, which resulted in a certain amount of tension during breakfast. Not the idyllic, relaxing start to the day.

So the spot is beautiful, I'm sure when Oscar and his wife are on form that they are friendly hosts, however the tense atmosphere and then being charged twice left a sour taste for us.

Room Tip: the hammocks are good - outside with a beautiful view of the valley. Take a blanket, it's cooler...

Oscar's place is located beautifully in the mountains overlooking the sea and Santa Marta. It has a very warm and welcome atmosphere and Oscar welcomes all its guests on arrival. Dinner at night takes place together with all the other guests, which gives the hostel a cosy feeling in which you share a lot of experiences with the other guests. The food is good, and for vegetarian they will prepare something different.
The bedrooms, hammocks and services are basic, which it should be in a place where the nature and views are the most important thing. I would really recommend staying at Oscar's place, it were two relaxed days I spend here and the surroundings of Minca are beautiful.

We stayed for 2 nights at Oscars and could have stayed much longer. The jungle setting of the hostel and waking up to the sound of howler monkeys, as well as the most dreamlike sunsets and clear skies for star gazing make this place something else. We stayed in a 4-bed dorm, but I slept on the veranda outside the dorm in a hammock both nights, listening to the insects humming, which was awesome.Oscar and his wife Sandra couldn't make you feel more welcome, and the communal home-cooked dinners, as well as Oscar's famous fixer-upper cocktail, make you feel like part of the family. Minca itself is great for trekking and has excellent places for swimming in the lakes and jumping into waterfalls! If you are lucky (as we were) you can also spot sloths and toucans in the trees. Go to Minca and stay at Oscars!

Oscar's Place is my favorite place to stay in Minca. Oscar himself is very friendly and helpful, and speaks perfect English. The food served at the hostal is delicious, and features local produce. The view is completely mindblowing. At night you can see the beautiful lights of Santa Marta and billions of stars. Oscar's Place is powered by a variety of cool renewable energy sources. Also, the place has really good vibes, so only cool people stay there! You won't know what you're missing out on if you don't check it out, and once you do, you'll want to stay forever!

I can't even describe how happy I was at Oscar's Place. Delicious food, wonderful people, the view was spectacular. Sleeping in the hammocks was definitely the way to go, they're perched out away from the jungle so it's breezy and there are very few bugs and mosquitoes while you sleep. I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a relaxing and quiet place to stay. Thank you so much Oscar!!

The place is incredibly peaceful and relaxing. I spent three nights at Oscar's place and it was my favorite part of my trip. The area is beautiful and has many ecological sites. There are enormous trees, hiking trails, and beautiful mountains on the property. The property has its own filtered spring water too.
