“lacks atmosphere but lovely views”
Reviewed 17 August 2008

I stayed at the Ambassador for a conference in June. Its a big place and lacks the charm of the older hotels on the main street however even if it is a bit of a blot on the landscape it is a comfortable hotel with a lovely indoor pool and jacuzzi just in case it rains, however the private seafront (concrete not sand) was my favorite place for a swim.

Our room was in an annex from the main builing and didn't have a view or a bath but was clean and newly decorated. I'd say it was a nice 3 star hotel by english standards.

The breakfast buffet in served in a room with a lovely view and has pleanty of choice even if some of it is rather unconvential, we even spotted some guests on sparking wine at 8am!

The hotel and in fact the resort seem to appeal to the older tourist market thanks to the flat promenade along the very pretty coast in each direction.

we didn't eat in the hotel but I'd recommend a little resturant up a side street called Mario's which was particularly good at veggie options.

I have just returned from a week at the Hotel Ambasador, Opatija. The hotel itself is fine and comfortable - as a single traveller I had a large twin room with a side sea view (supplement paid) which is something I have rarely had in Europe but the beds were like bricks. Even though the room had air conditioning, the temperature did not drop below 25 deg. Having the balcony door open wasn't a very good option as noise carried (being on 9th floor) as during the day there were screaming children and at night there was an all night disco in town which kept me awake.

Food was plentiful and a good choice but the hot food at breakfast was invariably luke warm. It was a bit of a scramble in the evening to get a table in the restaurant but there was a good choice of hot buffet and cold meats and salads. Not gourmet but adequate. Unfortunately, service in the restaurant left something to be desired.

The indoor pool and Wellness Centre were being refurbished (until September I believe) so out of use. The outside pool also apppeared to be out of action for few days due to cleaning.

All in all not a bad hotel but Opatija was too hot and noisy for me so not a place I would return to.

I have just had two weeks holiday in the Hotel Ambasador in Opatija.
The Hotel rooms were clean, the staff were friendly and very well turned out.
The problem was that the Outdoor Pool was more or less none functional because it had a tent over it. It was dirty and horrible to swim in. Due to the tent contraption there was only room for about 20 sunbeds in a very unpleasant area to sunbathe.
The food was more 3 star than 5 star - very disappointing.
There were only about 20 people in the dining room at night due - I think - to the poor quality and choice of food.
Overall very poor. There were conventions going on while we were there, and this is where their business mostly comes from.
I would not recommend it for Holidaymakers....

they turned off the air conditioning in the entire hotel and loud beach parties make it impossible to have the door open and get any sleep.

A wonderful Hotel, patronised by affluent Europeans but all the staff spoke English and were top class. Such a great place we stayed an extra night, cancelling another reservation.

The pool is clean and not overcrowded, but why anyone would go on it when the wonderful sea is available I don't know. £2 gets you a sun lounger on a private stretch of the coast (NB: there are no sandy beaches in Opatija, they are concrete sections, but for me that added to the experience), and with the sea being naturally calm, it is wonderful to have a dip and cool off.

The breakfast in the Hotel was varied, (pizza, chips, frankfurters, breads, cheese , meats, cereal, (bacon and sausage not at all good though!)) so you should be able to find something to set you up for the day.

Take a wander down to the main Lido near the bus station which is a leisurely stroll along the coastal path. Trie the Goda restaurant right next to one of the pools on the front, and also we HIGHLY recommend dinner on the sea terrace of Hotel Grand Adriatic, a further 10-15 mins along the coast path (about £4-£5 in a taxi from Ambassador!).

Finally, for just a quick filling snack try Pizza Andy at the top of the Hotle drive. Cheap and tasty.

All in all a wonderful holiday, but not for young lively holidaymakers. The resort is one patronised very much by the social upper classes of the surrounding countries, and if you are looking for a sun sea and sand type of holiday, you may find the resort a bit 'upper class' if you will.

My advice? Go and enjoy one of the most beautiful places in Europe, oh, and pay the extra for a Sea View. Spectacular.

  • Liked — Wonderful location just far enough away from the busy central strecth, but close enough to walk.
  • Disliked — Some of the guest were slightly 'obtuse' in their attitude.
  • Tips/Secrets — Sea view room, internet machines are cheap, and get to the sun loungers before 7.30 am! Oh, and try restaurants in town for quality dining.

Just returned from the Ambassador after 2 very good weeks. Not the hotel for families or younger couples as it is rather quiet most of the time. Many conferences and seminars take place there so often busy.Whilst we were there several extremely important politicians stayed there (interesting to observe the high security etc.) and the Television Awards for the whole of Croatia were presented on another occasion. We had a large suite which was absolutely delightful with excellent views, two bathrooms, jacuzzi etc.The balcony was enormous and went around a corner of the building thus had the sun all day.Expensive but DEFINITELY worth the extra pennies! Opatija is not highly touristy at this end of the town. Most of the hotels etc. are over at the opposite end - not a bad walk along the sea front or through the town itself. The staff at the hotel were helpful and pleasant. There were a few drawbacks however. The food was buffet style for breakfast and dinner. There was a good choice but for a 5 star hotel the quality was poor - boring and tasteless. Moreover, the Germans who seemed to be in the majority were pushy and extremely arrogant in their attitude and manner. Plenty of taxi boat rides to some lovely little places along the coast .Many of them had super fish restaurants.Longer excursions also available - the one to Venice = very good.

I have just had 5 days at the Hotel Ambassador. The hotel has many good features but certainly not worthy of the 5 star rating.

Very boring breakfast, same everyday, mass rush of the Germans each buffet meal is a bit off putting. Evening meal is again buffet, plenty of choice but once again boring.

Nice location, difficult to get a parking space, good rooms, we had two teenage kids, and the two adult channal TV was higly pornographic !
You can get same day newspaper at 0800 each morning which was fantastic.

Nice staff, cheap drinks but boring food!
