“Lovely location..”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

We stayed for 7 nights at this hotel in late May, on arrival our allocated room was a small double with views of the busy road and a very small shower room. We soon upgraded to a sea view room opposite, much more spacious, for a supplement of 10 euros a night. The hotel doesn't have balconies but the sea view rooms have large opening windows. The sun only comes into the room until midday though. The breakfast and dinner were all buffet and although there was quite a bit of choice I found the standard mediocre, and the food was never really hot, just sitting on hot water trays (bain Marie). For breakfast especially it would have been nice to have had someone cooking eggs to order, instead of just leaving them all in trays over the hot water. The staff were ok but never really engaging with the clients. Having breakfast on the terrace overlooking the sea was fine, except for the constant problem of pigeons trying to have their meal at the same time! There is no real beach at Opatija, every hotel has a concrete "patio" area where sun beds can be used. The hotel has a nice large indoor pool which is sea water and heated, I thought this was excellent. With very little effort and perhaps extra staff training, this could have been a much better hotel.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms especially on 5th and 6 floor a much better idea.

The hotel is in the centre of Opatija and you can walk to the famous beach and all the bars and restaurants. The rooms are a bit outdated, but nice and with a good size, clean and ours with a fantastic sea view.
The breakfast is impressive in content but maybe not in quality. The pool is nice and the fitness good though small. The bar and the sun terraces are nice and all staff friendly and very helpful.
The only downsize was the price for a small dog (17€ per night) and the stupid system for entering the parking which meant that we had to go to the reception each time we came back. I hope they change that!

We stayed at the Kristal Hotel Opatija on an eight day holiday with Travelsphere. It was billed as a 4 star hotel, which we felt was over-rated. We were given a double room, when a twin had been requested. Hotel management were most unhelpful, and it took until the second night till we finally got the twin room we booked. Staff in the main, were surly, and unhelpful. The one exception was Katerina in the bar, who was a delight. The worst fault was the diabolical food. All meals were "buffet" and cooked food was ALWAYS tepid at best. Meat was of poor quality. Vegetables were cooked out of existence, and "flavour" is obviously a word missing from the Kristal's vocabulary. On two occasions we ate out for dinner so we could have a decent HOT meal.
The hotel was clean and well maintained, and swimming pool was good. Although the temperature was 25 Celsius, there were no loungers on the concrete "beach" area. On enquiring we were told these were not provided until June . "Beach" Jacuzzi was not open either.. Similarly, no air conditioning till June, however high the temperature. If you are looking to lose weight on holiday, stay at the Kristal. But if you want decent food on your holiday, stay somewhere else !
Date of stay --- 7th to 15th May 2014.

Room Tip: Front rooms overlook the street. Sea view rooms cost more.

I stayed 2 nights in March - and was treated to some spectacular thunderstorms and rough seas! Hotel is clean and comfortable - although the bed was a little firm for my liking. Bathroom was big but shower was tiny. The buffet breakfast provided a huge selection but i would have liked to have had less choice but better quality. Coffee machine was terrible! I imagine this to be a great place to stay in summer - especially if your room has a sea view. Great location right on the sea shore and close to everything. Good wifi connection.

No complaints at all. Comfortable, clean and welcoming. Breakfast was good and sufficient for our needs. Good location , especially when walking into town for a meal. Room was not particularly spacious, but very well equipped.

Stayed for 3 nights in mid July 2013.
We booked a double room with a sea view and got a room on the 1st floor, which is one floor down from the reception level. It felt like we were in the basement. Corridors quite dark.
The room was large, lots of space to move around.
We booked a double bedroom, it was disappointing to see two single beds pushed together. The room was clean, but furniture outdated. Bathroom very clean.
The rooms in general are without balconies. We were right above the bar area so the roof of the bar was blocking some of the view.
There is a good air-con in the room, not too noisy and working perfectly. A small fridge/bar in the room with various alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks, but quite expensive.
Breakfast buffet was excellent, lots of choices. Cereals, continental and cooked breakfast, good selection of fruits, tasty local cheeses and ham/salami, different types of bread. You can have breakfast outside on the terrace, but would not recommend as there are lots of pigeons around, walking on the tables...Staff not so quick to remove leftover food.
Bar service very friendly, excellent cakes!
The hotel has a small beach, it looks like a pier, it was very crowdy so we took a taxi to Medveja beach 7 min drive. We loved it!
The hotel was OK, but we stayed in two other hotels in Opatija ( Astoria and Grand hotel 4 Opatija flowers) which were so much better, stylish, modern, better service for the same or better room price!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the second floor and higher - less noisy and better views

We can highly recommended it!
