Location! Jairo! Clean! Amenities!

Bottom line: I highly recommend La Cuardra. The hostal is extremely well located, extremely clean, and has adequate amenities to make for an enjoyable stay. And the Cotacachi La Cuadra alumni all value their friendship with owner Jairo. We do. Give it a shot.

Location
La Cuarda is located less than one-half block from the main square and about a three-block stroll down a picturesque, cobblestone lane to Leather Street. The town is compact and all of the downtown is well within easy walking distance.

The bus stop at the main square is just steps away. Catch a bus to the Otavlo market ($.25) or Ibarra ($.45) on about a 30-minute schedule. Grab a beverage for the bus ride at one of four neighborhood grocery stores on the square. Great for buying fruits, veggies and eggs for preparation in the La Cuardra kitchen.

Jairo (Hi Row)
If you are not familiar with Cotacachi and the surrounding area, Jairo IS going to be your greatest resource. First of all, he lived several years in New Jersey so he is fluent in English. And having grown up in Cotacachi he knows the people and the places to see. Need a ride to the airport, need a restaurant recommendation, the kids want to go horseback riding, how about a trip to Chachimbiro hot springs, how do I get to the Otovalo market, and more. Jairo will help.

We stayed at La Cuardra for four months. We enjoyed our stay. But, most importantly we left with a friendship with Jairo and a number of the guests with whom we shared time at the hostal. A number of guests, as with us, intended only to stay at La Cuadra while engaging an apartment. But, changed plans to stay and enjoy La Cuadra's almost-family-like atmosphere.

Clean
This place is CLEAN. Jairo is a task-master when it comes to cleanliness. Our room was cleaned daily. Not just dusted, but scrubbed.

We had a private bath. Ask for one when you make your reservation. The front rooms are noisy; buses and trucks. But after two days, I barely noticed them. Ask for a room in the back if you are a light sleeper. Good water pressure except once or twice (in four months) when a large number of guests were showering at the same time. And, hot water, except a few times when the gas tanks were exhausted – but that is the way it is in Cotacachi. Hot water is supplied by an “on-demand” system so there is no waiting for the tank to reheat.

Amenities
On the second floor are two large dining tables and a large well-stocked (dishes, pots, etc.) kitchen, with refrigerator. We cooked breakfast daily at the hostal. (Breakfasts in Ecuador are less than exciting.) But, more important than the food, was the camaraderie around the dining tables. Memories abound of wonderful encounters with other guests, Jairo, and his family.

Internet is available in the lobby and in the dining areas . . . sometimes in the room. The dining tables were the meeting areas for web surfing. They became areas for social interaction as much as www access.

There is a TV and DVD equipment in the large dining / living room area. And there is a good selection of DVDs to choose from.

Room Tip: Front rooms are noisy - buses. light sleepers, ask for a room in the back.

I've been staying at La Cuadra Hostal for a little over a week and it is fabulous here. The accommodations are great and I couldn't have asked for a better host. I was ill the first night and the host, Jairo, nursed me back to health. He treats everyone as family. The rooms are cleaned every day and wifi is available. I would recommend this hostal highly.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back are quieter.

We arrived at 12:45a. 2 1/2 hours later than planned! Jairo was quick to answer the door and very gracious from the start. Our room was huge. We had requested a room for two with a private bathroom. We had a double bed and a single as well as 3 built-in dressers and closets. Yes, the parade and buses were a little loud, but we knew that from other posts. Plenty of hot water as they now have on demand hot water. We will definitely be returning. Jairo will be happy to answer any questions you might have through email as well. Buses to Otavalo and Ibarra are simple. It's a half a block to the town square and you can get on them there. Easy to understand. The cities are on the front of the bus. 25 cents to Otavalo and 45 cents to Ibarra. Both adventures worth the trip.

I stayed here twice. I loved my room in this hostel - very clean, plenty large, comfortable, and neatly decorated. And the wifi worked as well as anywhere in Ecuador. The host,Jairo Gomez and other staff were very nice and very helpful. This is a great value!!

La Cuadra is located very close to one of the main squares in Cotacachi, close to taxis, and close to the buses to Ibarra, Otavalo and Quito. Otavalo is only 10-15 minutes away by bus (0.25 cents) and Ibarra (0.45 cents) a little over twice that time. Jairo is extremely helpful, kind and considerate -- even when I set off the front door alarm at 6am.

Do expect to hear church bells every morning at six, and if you are as fortunate as we were, you may hear a 5am marching band toot their horns as they trod past under your window. But that was only 1 day out of 5, and likely due to the 152nd anniversary of the official forming of the town. La Cuadra is also very close to the center square where music festivals occur (again, probably rare enough), so you can dance until 2 and then stumble home with ease.

The rooms are very clean, the showers very hot, and the rooftop always open - good for a coffee and sunrise over Mt. Imbabura or wine and sunset over Mt. Cotacachi. We cooked a few meals in the kitchen, which had everything we needed. The indigenous food market on Sunday mornings is a can't miss, and it is close to the regular market if you need to round off your shopping list. Be sure to grab a $5 taxi to Lago Cuicocha - a wonderful, semi-strenuous (and safe - if you are wondering from guidebook reviews) 5 hr. hike around the lake.

We would stay at La Cuadra again without hesitation.

Room Tip: We stayed in room #7, which was a premier choice if you want to peek out the window and see if the c...

We arrived into Cotachaci without having anything booked and we were luckily to find La Cuadra. The hostal was located just across from the main plaza, a few blocks away from the bus station, several restaurants and various stores. The owner, Jarro, was very helpful and provided great advice for day tours that we were interested in seeing.

The rooms were large, very clean, and had lots of storage, which was what we needed with a 2 year old. There was also a very well equipped kitchen that we were able to use, as well as a common table where we met great friends and had good conversations.

We will definitely return.

Room Tip: Rooms on the back would be quieter
