If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of any city, if you are an adventurous person who knows how to relax, if you are in love and a hopeless romantic, if you enjoy the finer things in life, if you are in need of privacy and if you have indepth knowledge of refinement, class, gastronomy, wine, and how to appreciate exquisite service, book your trip now to La Mirage - Garden Hotel and Spa, in Cotachachi, Ecuador. I lived in Ecuador for four years in the late 1990's and recently went back to visit some friends last year. I was still awe-struck by the resort as I was back in the 1990's. This garden style hotel and spa is a moment in time where you can unwind, enjoy life, reflect undisturbed, value your sense of self through walks along the hummingbird paths, pamper yourself in any of 17 elite spa treatments, and indulge in world-class haute cuisine that couples both French and Indigenous Regional techniques. Upon arrival at the hotel, you are greeted by one of the managers who will escort you to your unique suite (as all 23 rooms are decorated in exquisite fashion and have different personalities). The bellman then follows with your luggage or belongings while a smiling faced indigenous server brings Champagne to your abode, marking the beginning of this trip of luxury on which you have just embarked. There are many activities in the surrounding areas that you can participate in for a nominal fee or some that are free such as horsebackriding, guided tours, hiking tours around Cuichocha Crater Lake, artesanal handicrafts in several small towns (Cotacachi - leather goods, Otavalo - alpaca and jewelry, misc items, and Ibarra - wood carved goods). All of these activities can be coordinated from the front desk concierge and if transport is needed, they are able to schedule a driver for you. Next, I must talk about the spa which was not opened when I was there in the late 1990's, but was speechless when I returned last year to walk into a haven of purity, serenity and peace. The spa was built to the owners' own specifications and does not mimic any other facility I have experienced in its entirety. It is a place where the world stops for either an hour or two during A Touch by Angels aromatherapy, The Ecuadorian Delight massage, and/or Cleopatra's Bath, just to name a few. Last but not least, the food. As a self-proclaimed foodie and chef in the United States who has worked for the higher echelons of the international diplomatic community, there is no place in Ecuador except La Mirage where I can enjoy fresh ingredients, innovative French dishes with an Indigenous Flair, a wonderful use of fruits and herbs to create 20 different kinds of sorbets and ice creams, traditional Native dishes you don't have to be intimidated of trying and an extensive South American wine list. The owners are on the property everyday making sure the restaurant, gardens and rooms are impeccably clean, flourishing and inviting. If you have any need at all, their personnel are on hand at all times to make sure you are comfortable and enjoying your pampered home away from home. Some might think that the prices are a bit high for a resort in Latin America, but please note that you get your beautifully decorated suite, a four course gourmet dinner served by candlelight, Multi-lingual Satellite TV and an extensive breakfast buffet all included. Finally, La Mirage - Garden Hotel and Spa is Relais and Chateaux certified so if that does not seal this deal for you, I am not sure what will. If you want to escape from your hectic everyday, La Mirage is the place to do it. (Please also take advantage, of course, of Galapagos while you are here, I would go to Galapagos first and then stay at La Mirage at the end of your trip in order to reflect on this marvel of nature!!!)

BTW - they also have a bed and breakfast in the capital city of Quito, where you could stay and they can have a driver take you to La Mirage in Cotacachi, the next day for a small fee.

This is one of the best hotels I have ever visited, and I travel extensively.
The rooms are all individual, yet incredible.
We stayed in a suite, Dahlia, and negotiated a rate directly of $250 per night including breakfast and dinner.
Our suite featured a four post bed, draped with silks and cottons.
The suites are huge, with fireplaces that they light for you in the evening.
Our suite had it's own garden with lounger, table and chairs, including bronze statue.
The spa and pool are out of this world.
Dining was the most incredible experience, I know that you are in Ecuador, but you would pay $200 per couple to duplicate this experience in any cosmopolitan city.
Service was finer than anything you will probably ever experience.
Walk through the grounds and experience innumerous exotic plants and flowers, attracting humming birds, and see their resident peacocks.
Admittedly a little pricey, (but then I paid $119 and $159 for the JW Marriott, Quito, without dinner), but worth the splurge.

I stayed with my family at La Mirage at the beginning of August, after a week in Galapagos. We had a wonderful time. The food was excellent for all our meals—the children were delighted with the music box ‘amuse buche’ and the extensive breakfast buffet—and I was delighted knowing they grow or raise almost all their own foods. The staff to exceptionally wonderful care of my children. My pre-teen son was ill and they made sure he was well cared-for, without his having to ask. They brought soup and healing teas to the room, made sure he could find baseball on TV, and kept the soothing fire lit. I had a Shamanistic massage that included a cleansing with smoke, fire, and prayers from a native shaman, followed by a rose petal bath and a highly skilled massage, all by the same woman. I don’t know where they found her, but she is a treasure! While my tastes tend toward the more austere, I was delighted with the way the owners decorated—putting an ornate collection into an effective whole. I would recommend La Mirage.

  • Liked — This level of elegance and ecellence in Ecuador! What an accomplishment.
  • Tips/Secrets — La Mirage sits within a vibrant community. Local traditions involve all-night revels to celebrate weddings, graduations and other special events. Pack good earplugs and you won’t notice a thing.

We just returned from our trip to Ecuador and had the opportunity of spending 2 nights at La Mirage Garden Hotel and Spa located 2 hours north of Quito. The drive itself through rolling lush mountainside was very picturesque. When we arrived we had a lovely fresh fruit platter and champagne waiting for us in our spacious garden view suite. Our room even had a fireplace which the staff would light up in the evenings. Cotocachi, a small town known for its beautiful leather creations is only a few minutes away. The famous Otavalo Indian Market is also a short distance from La Mirage. Dinner, which was included in our price, was a 5 star affair, truly spectacular. A hearty breakfast was also included. The staff was extremely pleasant and helpful. Their lush gardens and beautiful orchids throughout the property were breathtaking! La Mirage was truly the highlight of our trip! We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who enjoys the finer things in life & being pampered!

Unfortunately, I was disappointed by this hotel experience. The gardens are pretty and the customer service was good (very attentive) but the hotel is VERY overpriced for what you get, especially by Ecuador standards - the prices are comparable to a NYC hotel - the food was OK at best (two meals a day included in price), and the location is not great. Some nice touches but overdone in terms of formality (peacocks roaming the grounds) - you really do not get the local flavor here - just hanging out w. a few other Americans. I'm not sure why the guidebooks recommend it so highly, frankly.

Where do I start...we were only here for 2 nights, and during that time, there were some "parties" happening in town, which lasted ALL NIGHT LONG....the bass of the music didn't die down until around 9am...
horrible, there is even a sign in the room saying that the locals "tend to party" well into the night, and that they will provide you with earplugs...not enough...I had my ipod on until it died, and it was still awful.
Besides this, the restaurant was really over the top with the presentation, almost forced elegance, which was laughable to this New Yorker...
Spa was okay...
Bed was comfortable, and some of the extra touches were good, but I would never stay here again....
Please ask for a room as far to the back of the property because of this problem, which they are more than well aware of. Thanks

We just returned from a 5 week trip to Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Island. Our final week was spent at La Mirage Garden Hotel and Spa in Cotacachi, Ecuador, only a two hour drive from Quito. We would recomend this spot to anyone who enjoys beautiful grounds, elegant accomodations, a gorgeous Dining Room, excellent food, wonderful service, and a hotel staff and owner whose goal it is to make your stay a five star experience. The Spa is to die for!
Enjoy!!!

PS: Cotacachi is the leather capital of Ecuador. It is a lovely village just a few blocks away from the hotel. We bought beautiful leather jackets, and other items for a fraction of the cost in Quito or here in the states.
