Galapagos Safari Camp
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 17 January 2011

My husband and I stayed at the Safari camp on our honeymoon and it proved to be one of the best decisions we had ever made. As we didn't fancy spending our time in Galapagos on a boat we divided our stay between here and the Royal Palm. The Safari Camp was the second place we stayed and was wonderful. You are so close to nature (We found an owl waiting for us on our balcony one night) and also staying in luxury. We felt as though we were honoured guests at a friends house, where we ate (organic) beef from their farm, lobster and fresh fish. If you want an unforgettable experience I would highly recommend this place.

The Galapagos Safari Camp designed an absolutely excellent adventure for our holiday vacation.

Prior to our trip, I anxiously read the thoughtful, detailed itinerary sent by the GSP. I was excited for the experience and opportunity to see so much wildlife and landscape. When we arrived, I was completely surprised by how the staff pulled off this itinerary. They displayed extraordinary orchestration of multiple events, taxis, guests, and boats. We had a wildlife-packed week of exploration. From the unbeatable sunsets, rainbows, views, and service of the staff to the unique architectural design of the camp and ultra-personal attention, I would highly recommend staying at GSP, particularly if you are at all accustomed to luxury.

Katrien (from Beligium, and the manager?) was unbelievably pleasant, helpful, and accommodating to all over our (very special) requests. She never made us feel as if we inconvenienced her in any way despite our multiple demands. What a gracious, friendly, attentive, responsive host. Also, I loved being greeted by a staff member, often Katrien, every time we returned from an outing. Someone would actually be waiting at the door to welcome you "home" which just felt great....and then I would bee-line for the coffee bar (set up all day in the main lodge with coffee/tea).

I am very glad we did not stay on a boat. I advocated for a sea-based tour when we were making our plans but eventually we opted for a land stay with daily excursions to a various islands. We spent almost all day on the boats and I was always, always very glad to come back to the camp for a comfortable shower, an exceptional dinner, and some privacy. Unless you charter your own yacht, I think you are hard-pressed to find luxury anywhere (even remotely) close to what you will experience at Galapagos Safari Camp.

The cuisine was indescribably tasty. We were treated to exceptional service, unique flavors, fresh ingredients and multiple courses of impressively delicious treats. I loved the food. Also, they graciously made many special meals for us as we have a few particularities and preferences ;). They were always accommodating, kind, and willing to make exceptions. Thank you, GSP chefs and kitchen staff! We really appreciated the special treatment and extra effort (and the extra servings of ceviche).

Michael and Stephanie were wonderful hosts as well. They were present and helpful, consistently ensuring we were having a high quality, pleasurable experience. They also have two gorgeous, playful children who made brief visits to the lodge. What a joy. Also, Beta, the dog, lives on the grounds. A docile, gentle, friendly, photogenic pet. We loved Beta who made me wonder how Michael trained such a well-behaved, playful dog? I need some coaching...

Finally, we loved the other guests. They really enhanced the experience. We met people, mostly Europeans and a couple from NYC, who had great stories, numerous travels, interesting backgrounds, and were all very kind, fun, and intelligent. I looked forward to evenings in the lodge by the fire, enjoying the wifi, company, and cocktails. (Pisco sour, bloody mary, and some brazilian drink...all delicious!)

Thank you Galapagos Safari Camp staff for a very personal, memorable experience. I will never forget the excellent service, spectacular views, unusual wildlife, and all-around once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Oh, and one more thing. I loved visiting Aquellare (Witch's Coven) on the first day. This is a residence as well as a beautiful restaurant run by a couple from Chile. (named after a town in Chile.) It was a wonderful lunch, lush grounds, and again, personal service. We went there with our guide, Fabio, on the day we arrived after seeing the tortoises and lava tubes. Very quaint and delicious. Don't miss it.

Enjoy your trip!

We stayed at the Galapagos Safari Camp in October 2010, which is located on the island of Santa Cruz, a 30 minute drive from the town of Puerto Ayora. The location was unbelievable, the hospitality of the manager, Catherine, the warmest imaginable, and the experience of living in a tent (albeit an impressively luxurious one) in the Galapagos a must-do. In addition, the food was easily the best we experienced in the islands, made all the better since, as the only guests at the time, we essentially had a private chef!

We can highly recommend the Safari Camp to Galapagos travelers looking for an extra special way to spend their evenings while visiting the geology, flora, and fauna in the Galapagos.

Jill and Javier at Galapagos Alternative (www.galapagosalternative.com) planned our stay at the Safari Camp.

We stayed 1 night here at the start of a cruise itinerary, however, due to some problems on the mainland we ended up being the only guests in the hotel that night (we had already been staying on Santa Cruz for diving). Having effectively been given a private hotel, it's hard not to let that colour our opinion of the Safari Camp. It was fantastic.

The view from the lodge is beautiful and we had incredible food there overlooking the island and out to sea. As it was our honeymoon, the manager gave us a complimentary bottle of bubbly at dinner - which was on our own at a gorgeous wooden table in the main lodge building. The tents themselves can hardly be called tents - they are super luxurious and comfortable, have luxury bathrooms, heating/cooling, great views and very nice beds. The evening was a little chilly and the staff even organised hot water bottles for us.

A lovely place to stay. However, you need to bear in mind that it is quite remote (except for going to see lava tubes and giant tortoises in the wild), but the hotel can help organise tours/guides/biking etc. We had stayed in the town of Puerto Ayora for a few days near a dive center, so coming out to the Safari Camp was a pretty nice way to shake off the town feeling before going on our cruise.

We only wished we'd had more time there to enjoy the beautiful swimming pool...

What a great place to stay in on Santa Cruz Island. The setting is amazing: you cannot beat the view. The service was also really good, we were really treated as friends. Katherine was a great organiser for our différent trips and activities during the day.
The food was so good as tell, such a pleasure to go back to the hôtel after a long day exploring.
We stayed there 6 nights but would have stayed much longer if we had known it was so good. It really reminded us of the lodge we stayed in in Tanzania for our honeymoon ( BehoBeho)

Great stay for a few days inland on Santa Cruz. The hotel is an african style main building where you sleep in luxury tents with lovely views. The food was excellent and the staff very helpful, especially with our lost luggage and organising day trips for us.

The tents are great with a small deck to sit on. Bed was comfy, storage space for clothes and a small bathroom.

There is also a small pool for relaxing and sunbathing.

We were only here for a few days at the start of our trip but it was the best hotel, especially in terms of service that we encountered in our entire stay in the Galapagos. Highly recommended.

Luxury hotel with a twist.....We chose a land based exploration of the Galapagos Islands because we neither wanted to feel seasick for a week, nor follow a strict routine on a cruise ship, rather we wanted to spend some days touring other islands via boat and some days simply relaxing on this beautifully situated farm in the Santa Cruz highlands. We also wanted to meet locals and get a feeling for life on the island.

When one walks into the main lodge, a stunning panarama of sky, ocean and island greets you. The lodge vibe is relaxed chic, it's as if you've entered a gigantic living room / lounge/ dining room in a private home showcased in Architectural Digest.

The food is sublime. Steak from local cows, lobster in season, incredible ceviche.... avocadoes, oranges, papayas, herbs, etc are all grown on the farm and used in the kitchen. Dinners can be group dinners with other hotel guests or can be private affairs. There is an honor bar in the main lodge.

The tents are roomy with nicely designed showers and bathroom and the beds are very comfortable. Each tent has a large wooden balcony with table and chairs and hammock. Our children were just so excited to be sleeping in a "tent" albeit a large permanent tent structure.

There are no TVs but there's a roaring fire in the fireplace in the lodge, great tunes and after dinner chess. There's no gym but there is a two mile private dirt road to jog on.. just you and the cows, horse, Darwin finches and views. There is no fancy spa, but the sea lions you snorkel with won't care about your pedicure.

The management and owners are wonderful and go out of their way to ensure your comfort and safety. They handpicked guides, drivers and boat crews to accompany us on short jaunts to other islands as well as to tour around Santa Cruz.

The Galapagos Islands alone would make for a once in a lifetime vacation, but this safari camp firmly cinched the top spot in our family history book!
